In a December 10, 2007 announcement, General Dynamics said the National Security Agency had certified the device and described it as the industry’s smallest and lightest in-line network encryptor for commercial, military and government IP networks carrying information classified at Top Secret and below.
Which encryptor did the headline mean?
It meant the TACLANE-Micro KG-175D, not the later TACLANE-Nano. The “smallest, lightest” wording was a contemporaneous General Dynamics claim reported in 2007. The announcement supplied no dimensions, weight or independent comparative test results, so it does not establish a current industry ranking.
What the KG-175D was designed to do
- Role: An in-line network encryptor for IP traffic.
- Security scope: The 2007 announcement said it protected information classified at Top Secret and below.
- Deployment: Intended for mobile and fixed platforms where space and power were limited, including tactical, airborne and shipboard environments.
- Management: The announcement said it could be remotely managed.
- Interoperability: It complied with HAIPE IS version 1.3.5, according to that announcement.
“The KG-175D encryptor is a critical ‘what’s next’ device for protecting information because it fully secures mobile networks in tactical, airborne and shipboard environments where space is at a premium.”
What “smallest and lightest” does—and does not—tell you
The phrase should be read as the manufacturer’s 2007 comparative description, not as a measured specification. The available announcement does not state the KG-175D’s dimensions, mass, throughput or test method, and no independent source in the reviewed material supplies those figures. It is therefore not possible to calculate its size advantage or confirm that it remains the smallest or lightest option today.

Do not confuse the KG-175D with TACLANE-Nano
General Dynamics later announced NSA certification for the separate TACLANE-Nano KG-175N in 2019. That model was described for voice, video and data classified at Top Secret/SCI and below on public and private IP networks. A current General Dynamics product listing gives the Nano 100 Mb/s full-duplex throughput; that figure belongs to KG-175N and must not be attributed to the 2007 KG-175D.
| Model | Certification/context | Published performance or physical data | What is not established |
|---|---|---|---|
| TACLANE-Micro KG-175D | NSA certification announced in 2007; IP encryption for Top Secret and below; HAIPE IS 1.3.5 compliance stated | No dimensions, weight or throughput stated in the cited announcement | Current ranking, lifecycle status and present procurement availability |
| TACLANE-Nano KG-175N | Separate NSA certification announced in 2019; voice, video and data for Top Secret/SCI and below | 100 Mb/s full-duplex on General Dynamics’ current indexed product page | That throughput does not describe the KG-175D |
| Viasat KG-250XS | Separate compact NSA-certified device listed by Viasat | Comparable figures were not established in the reviewed material | Any apples-to-apples size or weight ranking against the KG-175D |

Procurement and lifecycle caution
The 2007 announcement establishes what General Dynamics claimed and what HAIPE version it cited at that time; it does not establish that the KG-175D is still orderable, supported or approved for a current mission. Confirm lifecycle status, configuration, accreditation and supply channels with General Dynamics or the relevant government procurement authority before planning around the legacy model. Historical General Dynamics material said the later Nano could be purchased through an NSA IDIQ vehicle or directly from General Dynamics, but that is not confirmation of current availability.

“NSA Certifies Smallest, Lightest IP Encryptor” was a 2007 description of General Dynamics’ TACLANE-Micro KG-175D. It identified a compact, remotely manageable in-line encryptor for classified IP networks, but the underlying announcement gave no numerical size, weight or throughput data. The later KG-175N Nano is a different product, and its published 100 Mb/s full-duplex figure cannot be transferred to the KG-175D.
