Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →In the SitePoint example, two separate problems were involved: caret characters had been copied into the form body, and the router answered the POST with HTTP/1.1 302 Moved Temporarily and Location: /start.ghtml. Removing the stray carets fixed the malformed submission; adding -L tells curl to follow the redirect. The example concerns a ZXHN H108N V2.5 interface discussed on April 11, 2019, so its field names and token behavior should not be treated as a universal router recipe.
What -d actually does
curl’s -d (or --data) option sends the supplied data in an HTTP POST and uses application/x-www-form-urlencoded by default. It transmits the string you provide; it does not repair copied escape characters, rename fields, create missing tokens, or reproduce browser JavaScript.
Therefore, -X POST is not a fix for a bad login request. -d already selects POST. The important questions are whether the URL, fields, encoding, cookies, and redirect handling match the request made by the router’s web interface.
Why the SitePoint command failed
Stray caret characters changed the body
The command shown in the discussion contained caret characters between form values. The poster later reported that removing those carets fixed the initial login problem. In this concrete shell command, the carets were part of the data sent to the router, so the form no longer contained the values the router expected. Do not copy browser- or shell-escaped characters into a request unless they are actually present in the value captured by your browser.

The router returned a redirect
The captured response was a 302 redirect to /start.ghtml. curl does not follow redirects unless requested, so seeing the POST response—or the login page again—does not by itself prove that the POST was ignored. Add -L (or --location) when the router’s normal flow uses a redirect, then inspect the final URL and status.
Remember that curl normally changes a POST to GET when following a 301, 302, or 303 redirect. A redirected request is not necessarily a second POST containing the original credentials.

Reproduce the browser request instead of guessing
- Open the router login page and browser developer tools, then inspect the Network request generated by the login action.
- Record the exact request URL, method, content type, form body, response status,
Locationheader, andSet-Cookieheaders. - Compare every field name and value with your curl command. The example included device-specific fields such as
frashnum,action=login,Frm_Logintoken,Username, andPassword; your firmware may use different names. - Fetch a fresh login page before submitting. Hidden values such as
Frm_Logintokencan change between sessions. Do not hard-code a token copied from an earlier request. - Use the captured response to decide whether a redirect is expected and whether the final page is actually authenticated.
Constructing the form body safely
Use ordinary --data when you already have a correctly URL-encoded body. If a value contains spaces, ampersands, plus signs, slashes, or other reserved characters, let curl encode that field with --data-urlencode. Encoding only the affected fields is often clearer than manually assembling one long string.
curl -i -L -c cookies.txt -b cookies.txt
--data-urlencode 'action=login'
--data-urlencode 'Frm_Logintoken=FRESH_TOKEN'
--data-urlencode 'Username=YOUR_USERNAME'
--data-urlencode 'Password=YOUR_PASSWORD'
This is an illustrative shape, not a tested command for the named router. Add frashnum or any other field only when the current form capture shows that the device requires it. Replace every placeholder with values from your own router; never publish or reuse real credentials, tokens, or session cookies.

Protect credentials on your machine
Credentials placed directly in command arguments can appear in shell history or local process listings. For a real device, use a safer local workflow appropriate to your operating system, and remove any stored cookie jar after troubleshooting.
Cookies and hidden state
Some router interfaces associate the login POST with a session cookie set when the login page is fetched. The -c cookies.txt option writes cookies received by curl, while -b cookies.txt sends them on the next request. Using both across the initial page load and POST is a useful diagnostic step; the SitePoint discussion does not prove that this particular router requires a cookie.

Tokens and hidden fields are similarly device- and firmware-specific. A value that worked once may expire, be tied to a session, or be generated by page script. Capture a fresh request rather than assuming a token from an old example remains valid.

The follow-up question about using -X POST to enable an SSID is not the same as logging in. A submit button may run JavaScript such as pageSubmit() or ESSID_Enable(), validate fields, add hidden values, and then send a different endpoint and a much larger payload. A generic -X POST reproduces none of that behavior.

- Dual band router upgrades to 1200 Mbps high speed internet (300mbps for 2.4GHz plus 900Mbps for 5GHz), reducing buffering and ideal for 4K stream
- Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices
- Boosted Coverage - Four external antennas equipped with Beamforming technology extend and concentrate the Wi-Fi signals
- MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Inspect the wireless settings page and its JavaScript to identify the actual request triggered by the button.
- Capture the resulting POST URL, body, headers, cookies, and any fresh token.
- Replay that exact request only after authenticating with the same session.
- Verify the response and reload the settings page to confirm the change.
The discussion does not provide a verified minimal SSID-enable command, so inventing one would be unsafe and likely wrong for other firmware.
A diagnostic checklist
| Check | What to compare | Typical symptom when wrong |
|---|---|---|
| Request method | Browser method versus curl method; -d already sends POST |
Server treats the request as a page fetch rather than a form submission |
| Body | Exact field names, values, and absence of stray carets | Login form is rejected or shown again |
| Encoding | application/x-www-form-urlencoded; use --data-urlencode where needed |
Passwords or reserved characters arrive altered |
| Session | Cookies from the page load sent with the POST | Fresh token or session error |
| Redirect | 302 target and final status after -L |
You stop at an intermediate response and mistake it for failure |
| Dynamic fields | Fresh hidden token and current firmware’s names | Previously copied command expires or is ignored |
How to tell whether login succeeded
Use -i to display response headers and inspect the complete redirect chain with -L. A successful-looking HTTP response is not enough: check that the final URL is the expected authenticated page, that the response is not another login form, and that the session cookie is retained. Compare the final response with a browser request made during the same session when possible.
