SonicWall’s May 5, 2025 launch combined next-generation firewalls, a cloud-native management platform, zero-trust network access (ZTNA), endpoint and policy controls, AI-assisted monitoring, and co-managed operations for managed service providers (MSPs) and managed security service providers (MSSPs). The strategy is to package SonicWall technology and SonicSentry expertise so partners can deliver recurring security services to small and mid-sized customers—not merely to sell another firewall appliance.
What SonicWall announced
The launch introduced a coordinated offer built around SonicPlatform, SonicWall’s unified cloud-native management layer. The May announcement named the NSa 2800 and NSa 3800 next-generation firewalls, Managed Protection Service Suite (MPSS), SonicSentry operational support, Network Security Manager (NSM) 3.0, and SonicWall AI for Monitoring & Insight (SAMI).
SonicWall president and CEO Bob VanKirk told CRN, “This is about much more than hardware,” describing a move from a conventional firewall company toward a platform and managed-services provider. The company’s stated target is the MSP or MSSP that secures SMB and mid-market organizations and needs multi-tenant administration, repeatable policies, and services that can be billed monthly or annually.
How the platform pieces fit together
SonicPlatform
SonicPlatform is presented as the control layer across SonicWall appliances, services, and integrations. SonicWall’s launch material describes centralized management; CRN’s account describes the intended scope as firewall deployments, endpoint protection, secure access, and policy enforcement. That makes it broader than a console dedicated only to firewall configuration.

NSa 2800 and NSa 3800 firewalls
The physical anchor of the May launch is the NSa 2800 and NSa 3800. CRN reports that these models include embedded ZTNA, improved SSL decryption, and AI monitoring and insight. They remain appliances that require the appropriate software licenses, support, management, and service entitlements; SonicPlatform does not turn the launch into a software-only product.
ZTNA for secure access
SonicWall positions cloud-based ZTNA as a way to provide secure access while reducing dependence on legacy VPN designs. That is a vendor description of the intended use case, not independent evidence that ZTNA is always safer or faster than a particular VPN deployment. An MSP still has to define identities, device posture, application policies, and user lifecycle controls.
NSM 3.0
NSM 3.0 is SonicWall’s Network Security Manager. The launch describes SaaS and on-premises options, with cloud and on-box management. That choice is relevant to partners balancing centralized operations against customer requirements for local control or deployment-specific administration.
SAMI
SonicWall AI for Monitoring & Insight is described as embedded AI and automation intended to speed issue resolution and reduce alert fatigue. Those are SonicWall’s stated aims; the launch materials do not provide independent measurements of time saved, alert reduction, or improved detection.

SonicSentry
SonicSentry refers to SonicWall’s network operations center (NOC) and managed extended detection and response (MXDR) teams. In the launch model, these teams support partner-delivered services rather than replacing the MSP’s customer relationship.
What MPSS adds to an MSP offering
MPSS—Managed Protection Service Suite—is the co-managed firewall service in the launch. SonicWall lists 24/7 monitoring, health checks, patch management, and optimized firewall deployment among its service elements. The arrangement is intended to let an MSP operate a branded or resold service while SonicSentry supplies additional monitoring and operational expertise.
Michael Crean, SonicWall’s senior vice president of managed security services, told CRN, “This isn’t a move to go around the MSP. We’re building solutions they can brand, resell and trust to back them up.” Meriplex channel manager Greg Starr said the service could offload firewall-management complexity while adding 24/7 expert support and cyber-warranty protection. These are executive and partner views, not independently measured outcomes.
Operational responsibilities
- MSP/MSSP: owns the customer relationship, service design, commercial packaging, and the policies agreed with the customer.
- SonicSentry: provides the NOC/MXDR capabilities and co-managed support described by SonicWall.
- SonicPlatform and NSM: provide centralized or deployment-level administration, depending on the selected architecture.
- Customer: supplies accurate asset, identity, application, and escalation information and approves the security decisions that affect its business.
Self-managed APSS versus co-managed MPSS
SonicWall’s August 2025 Generation 8 announcement distinguishes self-managed APSS from co-managed MPSS. The materials do not publish comparable prices or independent effectiveness data, so the practical difference is who operates the controls and which support and warranty terms apply.

Warranty and insurance: read the amounts as conditional
SonicWall’s published figures refer to different arrangements and should not be treated as one universal entitlement:
- The May 5, 2025 announcement says deployments combined with SonicWall’s Cysurance partnership can qualify for tiered cyber-warranty coverage of up to $1 million. It also says MPSS-managed deployments double coverage for participating customers.
- CRN’s launch-exclusive coverage describes up to $200,000 for each managed firewall deployment through MPSS.
- SonicWall’s August 13, 2025 Generation 8 release describes $200,000 of embedded coverage with each MPSS-managed firewall and separately mentions optional cyber-insurance coverage of up to $1 million for full-stack offerings.
Eligibility, limits, participating products, exclusions, and whether coverage is embedded or optional must be confirmed in the contract for the specific customer and region. None of these announcements establishes a guaranteed payout for every SonicWall deployment.

On August 13, 2025, SonicWall extended the same platform-and-services strategy across a refreshed portfolio ranging from TZ280 through NSa 5800. The release says “nine” new firewall models in its headline but lists eight models in the detailed section; because the company’s wording conflicts internally, a single total should not be used without that qualification.
The refresh reiterates unified cloud management, embedded ZTNA licenses, SonicSentry co-managed security, and MPSS. It is therefore a continuation of the MSP packaging strategy rather than a separate shift back to an appliance-only product story.

What the launch means for an MSP evaluating SonicWall
Questions to settle before purchase
- Which customer and tenant boundaries must the management system support?
- Will the MSP operate monitoring and response itself, or use SonicSentry for co-managed coverage?
- Which firewalls, endpoint products, identity sources, and third-party integrations must be administered from the platform?
- Does the customer need cloud, on-premises, or hybrid NSM management?
- What ZTNA applications, users, devices, and policy exceptions must be migrated from existing VPN access?
- Which monitoring, patching, health-check, escalation, reporting, and after-hours duties are included in the written MPSS scope?
- What warranty or insurance amount applies to this exact model, service tier, geography, and participant?
Where the business case is strongest
The offer is most relevant when a provider wants a repeatable, multi-tenant service that combines appliance security with recurring operations and needs additional staff or NOC/MXDR capacity. It is less compelling as a simple replacement exercise if a customer wants only a standalone firewall and already has the people, processes, and tooling to operate it.
What remains unproven
The launch materials do not provide independent statistics showing lower costs, higher MSP margins, faster response, reduced risk, or better customer outcomes. Those claims require the provider to measure its own deployment: administrator hours, alert volumes, patch latency, incident response times, policy errors, service gross margin, and customer retention.
Why SonicWall calls this a strategic redefinition
VanKirk summarized the positioning to CRN: “We are not just a box company anymore. We’re a platform provider. And we are laser-focused on the needs of the MSPs who secure the SMB market.” Crean added that the company’s focus is “visibility, control and peace of mind,” rather than simply repeating industry labels such as XDR, MDR, and AI.
In practical terms, SonicWall is trying to make the firewall one component of a partner-operated service: hardware supplies enforcement, SonicPlatform and NSM supply administration, ZTNA supplies application access, SAMI supplies automation aims, and SonicSentry supplies optional operational depth. Whether that combination improves a particular provider’s economics or security depends on implementation, staffing, contracts, and customer requirements.
