In January 2025, INKY announced a generative-AI capability in its email-security platform. The vendor says GenAI examines the content and intent of incoming messages that have already passed initial reputation and spam checks, then adds contextual reasoning and explanations to detections. “Every single email” therefore refers to 100% of mail that reaches that stage—not an independently verified scan of every message entering the service.
What INKY announced
INKY’s January 2025 announcement presented generative AI as an added analysis layer for its email-security service, with the rollout initially reported for managed-service-provider (MSP) customers. INKY describes the feature as using contextual reasoning to identify phishing tactics, infer what a message is trying to make a recipient do, and explain why an alert was generated.
The announcement and contemporaneous coverage describe this as a vendor capability, not as a published independent benchmark. The available material does not establish detection rates, false-positive rates, savings, or a comparative advantage over other email-security products.
How does INKY’s GenAI email scanning work?
- Initial filtering: INKY says reputation and spam checks run first.
- GenAI analysis: Messages that pass those checks are then evaluated for content and intent. INKY says the system can reason about wording, tone, payment requests, and other signals associated with social engineering.
- Content normalization: The vendor describes converting obfuscated material into clean text so it can be analyzed.
- Decision and explanation: Resulting detections can include explanatory annotations describing the signals behind the decision. INKY also lists graymail filtering among the product capabilities described with the GenAI feature.
CRN reported that INKY used a trimmed-down large language model and adjusted hardware to control costs, with development taking more than a year. The report did not identify the model, provide hardware specifications, or offer a reproducible architecture or independent cost test.

What “intent” means in practice
INKY co-founder and CEO Dave Baggett told CRN: “That’s useful because it lets us understand the intent of the mail — is it asking the person to do something? What kind of tone does it have? Is it about payment?” He also said: “This means that it doesn’t matter how cleverly the attacker tries to word something — if a human would understand it, then Inky is going to understand it also.” Those statements describe the product goal; they are not measured proof that the system handles every wording or attack technique.
Does INKY scan every email?
Not in the unqualified sense suggested by the headline. INKY’s wording is that 100% of incoming email passing its initial reputation and spam checks receives the GenAI stage. Messages rejected earlier are not part of that GenAI claim. No independent audit in the available sources verifies the percentage or the resulting security performance.

The correct way to read the claim
| Question | What the January–February 2025 sources establish |
|---|---|
| Is GenAI applied to all mail entering INKY? | Not established. The vendor qualifies the claim by referring to mail that passes initial reputation and spam checks. |
| What does the GenAI stage examine? | INKY says it analyzes message text, context, intent, tone, obfuscated content, and phishing tactics. |
| Are results explained? | INKY says alerts can carry explanatory annotations. |
| Is effectiveness independently measured? | No independent detection, false-positive, or cost-efficiency benchmark is provided in the cited material. |
Which INKY plans include GenAI detection?
INKY’s knowledge-base article, updated February 11, 2025, says GenAI access requires the Professional or Advanced SKU and that some teams may need to migrate to newer SKUs. CRN reported on January 30, 2025 that users of those bundles could use the feature without an additional charge at launch.
Those are historical terms, not a current quotation. INKY may change bundle names, eligibility, migration requirements, or pricing. Organizations should confirm the current entitlement directly with INKY before treating GenAI as included in a renewal or purchase.

Does INKY send email data to third-party AI providers?
INKY states that its models operate within INKY’s infrastructure and that customer data is not sent to third parties. This is the vendor’s stated privacy position. The cited announcement and documentation do not provide an independent technical audit of that claim, nor do they publish model-hosting, retention, or regional-processing specifications.
Questions to ask during a security review
- Where are message content and GenAI annotations stored, and for how long?
- Which personnel or subprocessors can access the data?
- How are prompts, model updates, and customer data separated?
- What contractual or compliance documentation supports the stated in-house processing?
What evidence is available about results?
The only numerical outcome in the cited coverage is a partner-reported customer example. Chris Wilson, co-founder and CTO of INKY MSP partner Rudick Innovation and Technology, told CRN that a customer’s quarterly business review showed it was “only receiving a quarter of the emails intended for them” because INKY was preventing the other 75 percent as spam.

- A SMART START FOR YOUR HOME: This five-piece kit includes one SpeakerHub, two indoor door/window sensors, one indoor motion sensor and one AlarmFob. Monitor entry points and room activity, hear customized alerts at home and check device status in the YoLink app.
- HEAR WHAT IS HAPPENING: Set SpeakerHub to play a selected sound or a custom spoken message, such as Front door opened or Motion detected in the hallway. Configure alerts and automations in the app. SpeakerHub has no microphone and requires power, 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and internet for its audio features.
- SELF-MONITOR WITHOUT A MONTHLY FEE: Receive app push and email notifications for configured door and motion events, and share access with family through the YoLink app. Remote access and notifications require an internet-connected, powered SpeakerHub. Optional paid notification services are separate.
- THAT WAS EASY: Power SpeakerHub with the included USB cable and adapter, connect it to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, and scan each device QR code in the YoLink app. Install the sensors, configure your alert preferences and test the system. SpeakerHub does not have an Ethernet port; a compatible Android or Apple smartphone is required.
- MORE THAN A DOOR ALARM: Check open/closed status and door activity history, set left-open reminders and use motion events in your routines. AlarmFob provides four programmable buttons for configured alarm modes, scenes and compatible device controls, so everyday actions are close at hand.
That is one customer anecdote reported by a partner, not a general INKY performance statistic. It does not isolate the GenAI component, specify the customer’s mail volume or configuration, or report false positives. No independent benchmark establishes how often INKY detects phishing, blocks legitimate mail, or reduces operating costs.

| Comparison axis | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Pipeline coverage | Which messages are eligible for GenAI after reputation and spam checks, and how are earlier decisions surfaced? |
| Explainability | What annotations appear in alerts, and can administrators export or review them? |
| Data handling | Whether processing remains within INKY infrastructure, plus retention, access, and geographic controls. |
| Commercial scope | Current SKU eligibility, migration rules, usage limits, and whether GenAI carries a separate fee. |
| Measured performance | Independent tests covering detection, false positives, latency, and operational impact. |
The announcement is significant as a product direction: INKY is applying language-model reasoning after conventional filtering and attaching human-readable context to decisions. The available evidence does not justify ranking it against competing products or treating the headline as proof that every incoming message is independently analyzed.
