The practical answer depends on your vehicle’s charge port and the individual station: most 2026 GM EVs use CCS1 and need an approved NACS DC adapter, while GM expects its 2027 model-year EVs to launch with native NACS ports. Not every Supercharger or stall is open to every GM vehicle.
What changed, and what has not
General Motors announced access to more than 17,800 Tesla Superchargers on September 18, 2024. That figure described the network available at the time of the announcement; it is not a current independent count. GM said owners could find stations, check availability, start charging and pay through their Chevrolet, Cadillac or GMC vehicle app.
In an August 2026 overview, GM said all then-current EVs from those three brands could use compatible NACS connections either through an adapter or a built-in NACS port. GM also said most 2026 models still had CCS1 ports and required an adapter, and that it expected all 2027 model-year EVs across the brands to have native NACS ports. “Expected” does not mean every 2027 vehicle had already launched by that date.
Do you need an adapter?
| Vehicle configuration | What you need | Charging connection |
|---|---|---|
| CCS1-equipped GM EV, including most 2026 models | GM-approved NACS DC adapter | Adapter connects the Tesla NACS cable to the vehicle’s CCS1 inlet |
| GM EV with a native NACS port | No CCS-to-NACS adapter | Plug the Supercharger’s NACS cable directly into the vehicle |
Tesla’s eligibility guidance says CCS1 vehicles must use an NACS DC adapter supplied by Tesla or by the vehicle manufacturer and prohibits third-party adapters. GM advises using its approved adapter and says damage caused by non-GM-approved parts is not covered under the vehicle limited warranty and may affect remaining coverage for affected components. That is the manufacturers’ stated warranty guidance, not a definitive legal ruling on every dispute.

Which GM adapter works?
The relevant GM accessory is the NACS DC Adapter, part 85836744. GM describes it as a DC adapter for NACS fast chargers, compatible with V3 and later Superchargers, and rated up to 500 amps and 1,000 volts. That electrical rating is the adapter’s limit, not the charging rate your car will receive.
Actual power depends on the Supercharger’s generation and output, your vehicle’s charging system and battery conditions, and other operating factors. A connector that physically fits therefore does not guarantee a particular kilowatt rate.

How to start a Tesla Supercharger session in the GM app
- Open your Chevrolet, Cadillac or GMC vehicle app.
- Open Settings and choose Public Charging.
- Activate Tesla Supercharger access and add a payment method.
- Use the app’s map to locate an eligible Supercharger and review its availability.
- At the site, connect the Tesla cable to the GM NACS DC adapter if your vehicle has CCS1, then plug the adapter into the vehicle.
- Start the session in the app and stop it there when charging is complete.
Chevrolet’s support guide says this workflow covers locating, starting and paying for sessions at certain Superchargers. It also says there is no monthly fee for app-based Tesla access; you pay for the energy used. Station-specific pricing can still vary.
Using Tesla’s app instead
Tesla’s support flow for other automakers lets you add vehicle details, find compatible sites, enter a payment method and start charging. Tesla identifies GM as an automaker with access, but says availability depends on both the vehicle and the site. Check the Tesla app or your GM brand app before driving to a location; access is not universal across every stall.

What the adapter cannot do
It is for DC fast charging
GM says the adapter is designed for Tesla Superchargers and other NACS-equipped DC fast chargers. It does not work with Tesla Level 2 Destination chargers.

In a June 2026 Energy Pass announcement, GM said its vehicle apps would combine network registration and payment. The launch list named Tesla Supercharger, IONNA and Electrify America, with ChargePoint and EVgo described as coming soon. GM also announced a later-2026 over-the-air update intended to enable Plug & Charge on NACS-native GM EVs already on the road. That announcement describes a planned rollout, so availability should be confirmed in the vehicle app rather than assumed.

What to check before you leave
- Confirm whether your EV has CCS1 or native NACS.
- If it has CCS1, carry the GM-approved NACS DC adapter, part 85836744.
- Verify the exact station and vehicle are listed as eligible in the GM or Tesla app.
- Confirm the site is a compatible DC Supercharger, not a Tesla Destination Level 2 charger.
- Add and verify your payment method before arriving.
- Expect charging speed to be determined by the car and charger, not by the adapter’s 500-amp/1,000-volt rating.
GM vice president of GM Energy Wade Sheffer said in the September 18, 2024 announcement that broader fast-charging access was intended to improve the customer experience and make the transition to electric vehicles more seamless. In practice, the transition is most seamless for NACS-equipped vehicles; CCS1 owners still need the approved adapter and a station-by-station eligibility check.
