Amazon completed its acquisition of Ring Inc. on April 12, 2018. Ring continued operating as a consumer-facing brand, selling video doorbells, cameras, accessories and related services.
When did Amazon buy Ring?
Amazon announced that the Ring acquisition closed on April 12, 2018. Ring’s announcement on the same date said the company would remain its own brand and continue supporting past, current and future Ring products and services.
Amazon’s 2018 Form 10-K, filed in 2019, reports that Amazon acquired Ring Inc. for approximately $839 million in cash consideration, net of cash acquired. That is the accounting figure reported in Amazon’s filing; it should not be presented as an unqualified company valuation.
Is Ring still a separate company?
Ring remains the brand customers see on its products and services, even though Amazon owns it. Ring’s post-acquisition announcement specifically promised brand continuity. Ring’s privacy notice, last updated June 5, 2026, uses “Ring” for Ring LLC and its affiliates. Those statements confirm the continuing Ring identity but do not, by themselves, document every detail of its current subsidiary structure.

What does Ring make?
Ring is a home-security products and services company. The Federal Trade Commission describes its offerings as including video-enabled cameras, doorbells and related accessories and services. A Ring Video Doorbell is therefore a Ring product within Amazon’s broader ownership portfolio; ownership does not mean every model has the same features, subscription requirements or compatibility.
Why does Amazon own Ring?
The acquisition brought Ring’s connected home-security products into Amazon’s consumer-device business. At the time of the closing, Ring CEO and Chief Inventor Jamie Siminoff said the company’s mission to reduce crime in neighborhoods was central to its work. Amazon’s ownership also places Ring within an ecosystem that includes Amazon accounts, Alexa integration and Amazon’s wider device and services operations, although the exact capabilities depend on the product and software version.

What Amazon’s ownership means for customers
- Brand: You generally encounter Ring branding, not an Amazon-branded doorbell or camera.
- Support: Ring said it would continue supporting existing and future Ring products and services after the acquisition.
- Privacy: Ring’s data practices are governed by its own published privacy notice and applicable law. Amazon ownership does not eliminate the need to review current settings, policies and subscription terms.
- Product decisions: Amazon ownership alone does not establish a product’s current price, availability, compatibility or required subscription. Check the specific model’s documentation before buying or installing it.
Bottom line
Amazon has owned Ring since the acquisition closed on April 12, 2018. Ring continues as a distinct home-security brand for video doorbells, cameras, accessories and related services.
