Fetchr was a Dubai-founded logistics company built around a simple idea: use a recipient’s smartphone GPS location as the delivery address. Founded in 2012 by Idriss Al Rifai and Joy Ajlouny, it focused mainly on e-commerce shipments, expanded across the Middle East, and later faced an insolvency and possible-liquidation warning in 2021. The available reporting does not establish a definitive closure date.
What was Fetchr?
Fetchr was a last-mile delivery startup launched from Dubai. Instead of depending on a conventional street address, its “phone-to-phone” system used the customer’s mobile location to guide a courier to the recipient.
The approach targeted a practical regional problem: addresses could be incomplete, inconsistent or unavailable in some delivery situations. A live GPS position gave the courier a usable destination while allowing the customer to receive deliveries through a phone-based workflow.
How the phone-to-phone model worked
- The recipient or sender provided a smartphone location rather than relying only on a fixed street address.
- For a personal pickup, a user could photograph the item, select a collection time within a 30-minute window and request collection.
- Fetchr coordinated the courier, pickup or delivery through its own customer-facing software.
The company’s principal business was delivering retailer and e-commerce orders. Idriss Al Rifai said in a 2019 Computer Weekly interview that about 98% of orders came from regional online-retail websites, making Fetchr primarily a merchant logistics platform rather than a consumer parcel marketplace.

Who founded Fetchr, and when did it launch?
Idriss Al Rifai and Joy Ajlouny founded Fetchr in Dubai in 2012. The National reported that the service launched in the United Arab Emirates in June 2013, after the founders initially financed it with personal savings, family money and support from friends.
Al Rifai’s e-commerce background helped shape the company’s emphasis on delivery completion, online retailers and returns. Ajlouny was also part of the founding leadership that developed the address-by-phone proposition for Middle Eastern commerce.
How large did Fetchr become?
Fetchr’s reported footprint changed rapidly, so its figures need to be read with their dates rather than treated as a current operating profile.

The 2019 city count and the 2017 staffing figure describe different points in the company’s expansion and should not be combined into an undated claim about Fetchr’s size.
What technology did Fetchr build?
Proprietary logistics software
Fetchr built its own enterprise resource planning system, customer applications and software for e-commerce clients. Al Rifai told Computer Weekly that regional trading-hour practices and the need to place GPS at the center of delivery made an off-the-shelf system unsuitable. His explanation was direct: “There were so many peculiarities in our trading hours and how we include GPS at the core of the process that we had to build it ourselves.”
The platform was reported to run on Amazon Web Services after an earlier move away from Microsoft Azure. Fetchr recruited engineers from outside Dubai as it expanded its technology operation, reaching a reported 80–100 engineers working on the app at one time by 2019.

Why owning the stack mattered
- Location handling: GPS was a core delivery input, not an optional feature added to a standard address form.
- Merchant integration: Retail clients needed order, dispatch, delivery and returns workflows connected to their online stores.
- Regional operations: The software had to accommodate local working patterns and different delivery conditions across multiple countries.
Al Rifai described scale as an extension of the products the company had already built: “Scale comes naturally as the next step on the products you build.”
How much funding did Fetchr raise?
Fetchr used venture funding to finance rapid geographic and technical expansion. Gulf News reported a $41 million Series B in 2017. Computer Weekly reported that the company had raised $52 million across four rounds by 2019.

The 2017 financing was associated with New Enterprise Associates as lead investor. The National listed Majid Al Futtaim, Nokia Growth Partners, Raed Ventures, Iliad Partners, Beco Capital, YBA Kanoo, Venture Souq and Swicorp among the investors named in connection with that financing.

These figures are not contradictory: the Series B is one financing round, while the $52 million figure is the reported cumulative total across four rounds by 2019.

For online retailers, a failed delivery can create a second courier attempt, extra cost, customer-service work and a difficult returns process. Replacing an unreliable or missing street address with a mobile location was intended to make the final handoff more precise and improve completion rates.
The model also connected the customer and courier through a device most recipients already carried. That reduced the need for the sender to know a formal address, while giving Fetchr a location signal that could be updated for a particular delivery.

Limits and business risks
- Delivery economics: GPS can identify a destination, but profitability still depends on route density, courier costs, successful first attempts and returns.
- Regulation: Operating across several jurisdictions exposed the company to different tax, labor and logistics rules.
- Capital dependence: Fast expansion required continued funding before each market and delivery network became self-sustaining.
- Location reliability: A phone coordinate does not automatically solve gated buildings, crowded areas, poor connectivity or a customer who moves after sharing a location.
Is Fetchr still in business?
The latest strongly sourced status in the available reporting is a severe financial-distress warning, not a confirmed closure record. Bloomberg reported on 6 October 2021 that Fetchr had become “insolvent” and was considering liquidation after a disputed Saudi tax bill.
Wamda described the investor warning as involving a disputed $100 million VAT and zakat bill. It also reported that Fetchr had nearly collapsed in late 2019 before emergency funding and a Saudi-focused turnaround plan.
Those reports support saying that Fetchr faced insolvency and possible liquidation in 2021. They do not establish an exact shutdown date, and they do not prove that every later entity using the Fetchr name stopped operating. The most accurate answer is therefore: Fetchr’s later status is uncertain, with the last well-documented account pointing to insolvency and a possible liquidation rather than a verified ongoing service or a precisely dated closure.
Bottom line
Fetchr’s significance was its attempt to turn a smartphone location into a practical address for Middle Eastern e-commerce. The Dubai startup, founded by Idriss Al Rifai and Joy Ajlouny, built proprietary delivery software, expanded to six countries and a reported 500 cities by 2019, and raised substantial venture capital. Its 2021 insolvency warning shows that solving the addressing problem did not remove the harder challenges of delivery economics, regulation and sustainable expansion.
