No—Tapo did not replace Kasa. When TP-Link launched Tapo in the United States in May 2022, a TP-Link spokesperson quoted by BetaNews said the two lines would “co-exist” and serve different consumer needs. TP-Link still describes Tapo and Kasa as distinct brands, although many Kasa devices can now be managed from the Tapo app.
What TP-Link said at the US launch
BetaNews reported on May 16, 2022, that TP-Link had officially launched Tapo in the United States. The launch-era range included indoor and outdoor cameras, smart outlet adapters and RGB light strips.
A TP-Link spokesperson told BetaNews: “With TP-Link’s Kasa Smart Home brand already being a leader in smart lighting, plugs and switches, Tapo will showcase unique innovations with hardware and design upgrades across the board, giving offerings market-leading specs and functionality. It does not replace Kasa going forward, the two lines will co-exist together and offer different products depending on the needs of the consumer.”
That statement addresses the concern for existing Kasa owners: the Tapo launch was a second brand, not an announcement that Kasa devices would be discontinued or abandoned.

How TP-Link positioned the two brands
In a 2022 product guide, TP-Link described Kasa as targeting “mainstream and high-end consumers” and said it had established Tapo as a new independent brand intended to make smart-home products affordable. This is TP-Link’s historical positioning, not a guarantee that every current product fits one price or feature tier.

What changed with Tapo App 3.0
On January 9, 2024, TP-Link announced Tapo App 3.0 support for Kasa devices while reiterating that “Kasa Smart and Tapo remain distinct and independent brands.” The integration is an app-management change, not a merger of the product lines.

For supported devices, the announcement listed synchronization of Kasa devices, groups, smart actions, scenes, timers, away mode and schedules. TP-Link also said users could continue managing Kasa products in the Kasa app.
Which Kasa devices work in the Tapo app?
TP-Link’s current support guidance says most Kasa devices can be added to Tapo, but compatibility is model-specific. The FAQ names Kasa KE100 and KE110 as exceptions that do not support the Tapo app. Do not interpret the integration as universal support for every Kasa product.

Requirements for linking
- Install and sign in to both the Tapo and Kasa apps.
- Use the same TP-Link ID in both apps.
- In the Tapo app, open Me > Link Tapo with Kasa.
- Complete the linking flow and check the resulting device list.
Linked Kasa devices appear under All Devices in Tapo and require manual room assignment.
What does not transfer
- Kasa Care and Tapo Care remain separate subscriptions.
- Kasa cloud video history does not transfer to, or become viewable in, Tapo.
- A linked account does not remove model exclusions such as KE100 and KE110.
Does this make Kasa obsolete?
No. The launch statement, the 2024 App 3.0 announcement and the current support instructions all point to coexistence. Kasa owners can keep using the Kasa app, and eligible devices can also be surfaced in Tapo for consolidated control.

TP-Link reported more than 13 million Tapo app users worldwide and more than 10 million Kasa Smart app users worldwide in an October 7, 2023 release. Those are company-reported app-user counts, not audited customer totals or measurements of active use, but they show that both ecosystems continued to have substantial user bases after Tapo’s launch.

Keep using Kasa if it meets your needs
There is no stated requirement to move an existing device. The Kasa app remains an available management option, and TP-Link has not announced that the Kasa line is being shut down.

Link compatible devices when one app is useful
If you want Tapo’s interface for supported Kasa hardware, link the accounts with the same TP-Link ID and verify each model. Plan to reassign rooms manually, and keep expectations separate for cameras because cloud recordings and care subscriptions do not move between apps.
Check the exact model before buying or migrating
For a purchase or a mixed setup, compare the exact model and region, supported app, smart-home standards and voice-assistant support, local versus cloud camera storage, subscription features, energy monitoring and automation capabilities. Brand names alone do not establish feature parity or compatibility.
Bottom line for the Tapo-versus-Kasa question
Tapo was launched in the US as a complementary TP-Link brand, not a successor to Kasa. TP-Link’s later app integration lets many Kasa products appear in Tapo, but the brands, subscriptions and some device support remain separate. Treat compatibility as a model-by-model question and keep the Kasa app available unless your specific devices and features work as expected in Tapo.
