A robot cello performance joined a live orchestra at Malmö Live Concert Hall in Sweden. The work, Veer (bot) by composer Jacob Mühlrad, used two industrial robotic arms: one system manipulated the fingerboard through a 3D-printed appendage while the arms moved a bow across the strings. The event was presented as an artistic investigation of what technology can add to human musicianship—not as evidence that robots can replace orchestral players.

What happened at Malmö Live

In October 2024, reports described a performance of Mühlrad’s Veer (bot) at Malmö Live Concert Hall. A cello part entered after the orchestra had established the musical texture, placing the machine-controlled instrument inside a conventional ensemble rather than presenting it as a standalone robot concert.

Classic FM characterized the event as a “world first.” That wording belongs to the report; the available coverage does not establish an independently verified survey proving that no comparable performance had occurred elsewhere.

How the robotic cello produced sound

Bow movement

Futurism reported that two industrial robotic arms moved a bow across the cello’s strings. Bow speed, pressure and position determine how the strings vibrate, so this mechanical motion supplied the instrument’s sustained sound in the same basic physical way a human bow does.

Fingerboard manipulation

A 3D-printed appendage was reported to manipulate the fingerboard. Pressing strings at different positions changes their vibrating length and therefore their pitch. The reports do not identify the appendage’s detailed geometry, materials or actuation method.

What the reports do not specify

No arm manufacturer, cello model, sensors, software, control architecture, tuning procedure or measured accuracy is established in the published accounts. The description should therefore be read as a high-level account of the setup, not a complete engineering specification.

What the live orchestra contributed

The orchestra supplied the surrounding musical context and ensemble interaction. The reported staging had the orchestra establish the texture before the robotic cello joined, making the machine part one voice in a composed performance. Nothing in the accounts indicates that the robot conducted the ensemble or autonomously interpreted the entire score.

Why Mühlrad says the project matters

Mühlrad framed the work as an exploration of the cello and technology’s relationship to musicianship. Futurism reproduced this statement, attributed to an interview with Reuters: “For me as a composer, it’s kind of liberating to go beyond the human anatomy when you think about what to write for a cello.” The quotation is available through that secondary report, so its full interview context is not established here.

That idea shifts the question from “Can a robot replace a cellist?” to “What musical gestures become possible when a composer is not limited to human reach, strength or coordination?” The performance demonstrates a designed mechanical interpretation of a cello part, not a machine’s independent artistic intention.

What this performance does—and does not—prove

Established by the reports Not established by the reports
Veer (bot) was composed by Jacob Mühlrad. A measured level of pitch, timing or expressive accuracy.
The performance took place at Malmö Live Concert Hall with an orchestra. The exact cello model, robot brands or control software.
Reporting attributes the setup to researcher and composer Fredrik Gran. Detailed sensors, feedback systems, programming workflow or design drawings.
Two industrial robotic arms moved the bow, while a 3D-printed appendage manipulated the fingerboard. That the robot felt emotion, intended a message or performed autonomously.
The project was presented as creative exploration of technology and musicianship. That robots are generally ready to replace human orchestral performers.

Why the distinction matters

A cello is an acoustic instrument, but producing a convincing part requires coordinated control of bow contact, finger placement, timing and dynamics. This event shows that those physical actions can be divided between robotic mechanisms and embedded in a rehearsed orchestral work. It does not by itself answer broader questions about reliability, repeatability, cost, safety or musical judgment.

Nor does evocative language about a listener’s response demonstrate machine feeling. Any emotional meaning belongs to the composition, performance context and audience interpretation unless evidence establishes an internal experience—which these reports do not.

The practical takeaway

The Malmö performance is best understood as a documented artistic experiment: a composer and robotics team built a mechanism capable of bowing and changing notes on a cello, then placed that mechanism alongside human musicians. Its significance lies in expanding the physical possibilities a composer can write for, while leaving the orchestra’s interpretive and collaborative role central.
