Since launch, DJ has expanded beyond between-song commentary. Spotify’s current U.S. support description includes text and voice requests, mood changes, and questions about podcasts and audiobooks. Availability still depends on your Premium account, country, app, and supported language.

What Spotify launched in February 2023
Spotify announced DJ on February 22, 2023. The initial version was an English-language beta for Premium listeners in the United States and Canada using the Spotify app on iOS or Android.
Spotify described DJ as a personalized guide that could choose a stream of music, explain why tracks or artists were relevant, and change direction when the listener was not enjoying the current selection. The listener could tap the DJ control to move to a different experience.

The launch concept was therefore closer to a continuously generated radio-style stream with an announcer than to a general-purpose chatbot. Its signature behavior was spoken context between tracks.
What “OpenAI-powered” meant
Spotify’s launch announcement separated DJ into three technical and editorial parts:

Spotify’s wording was that generative AI through OpenAI technology helped editors provide “insightful facts about the music, artists, or genres” listeners were hearing. That is an account of Spotify’s product design, not independent validation of the system’s factual accuracy or voice quality.

How the original DJ experience worked
A personalized stream, not a playlist you built
DJ selected music for an individual listener instead of requiring the listener to assemble a queue manually. Spotify’s description emphasized familiarity with a person’s music taste and the ability to move through different listening directions.

Commentary between groups of tracks
The launch design inserted a spoken introduction or explanation around the music. Commentary could cover a song, artist, genre, or related context, making DJ resemble a programmed music channel with a host.
Feedback changed the direction
When the current direction was not working, listeners could use the DJ control to switch the experience. Spotify presented this as a way to refresh the stream rather than as a promise that every recommendation would be correct.

The market totals are dated statements from Spotify, not a complete current country list. The more-than-75-market figure describes the May 2026 expansion, while the current support page gives no exhaustive language or country table.

How to find DJ in Spotify
- Sign in to a Spotify Premium account in the Spotify mobile app.
- Check the Home feed for DJ.
- If it is not shown there, use Search or look from the Now Playing screen, which Spotify lists as additional entry points in its current U.S. support guidance.
- Start the DJ stream, then use the available text or voice control to request a direction or change the mood.
- If DJ is missing, verify your account’s Premium status, app version, country, and supported language. Spotify’s rollout is regional and the feature remains in beta.
DJ does not require a special phone, speaker, or headphone model. It is delivered through the Spotify app. A Spotify gift card may be one way to pay for Premium where gift cards and redemption are supported, but a gift card is not a separate DJ product and eligibility varies by market.

It is an adaptive listening guide
DJ combines Spotify’s recommendation systems, editorial context, generated speech, and listener requests into a hands-off listening mode. It can be useful when you want Spotify to choose a direction without building a playlist yourself.
It is not an autonomous OpenAI music selector
Spotify’s launch explanation assigns track selection to Spotify personalization and describes OpenAI generation as an editorial tool. Calling DJ an OpenAI chatbot that independently selects and narrates everything would misstate that division of labor.

It is not universally available
DJ is a Premium feature in Spotify’s current U.S. support information. Country, language, and account availability have changed over time, so the 2023 U.S./Canada launch footprint and the dated 2026 market count should not be treated as a permanent global list.
How to interpret Spotify’s usage and rollout claims
Spotify reported that 94 million Spotify Premium users had used DJ since its 2023 launch in the company’s May 7, 2026 announcement. The same announcement described availability in more than 75 markets and said the feature was still in beta. Those figures are Spotify’s corporate measurements and rollout statements; no independent usage study or controlled comparison establishes recommendation quality, factual accuracy, or how often DJ speaks.
