NASA’s Advanced Composite Solar Sail System (ACS3) fully deployed its solar sail on August 29, 2024. The spacecraft is a technology demonstration in low Earth orbit, testing whether lightweight composite booms can deploy and support a large sail from a 12U CubeSat. It is not yet a deep-space mission using a solar sail to travel to another world.

What happened to NASA’s solar sail

ACS3 launched on April 23, 2024, aboard a Rocket Lab Electron rocket from Māhia, New Zealand. The spacecraft was released from the rocket’s kick stage and entered low Earth orbit.

NASA initially paused the sail-unfurling sequence on August 26 after an onboard power monitor detected higher-than-expected motor currents. NASA said communications, electrical power, and attitude control remained normal while operators examined the spacecraft data.

After a successful test of the sail-hoisting boom system, NASA confirmed full deployment on August 29. Four onboard cameras photographed the sail and its supporting booms.

ACS3’s primary test

Deployable composite booms

The mission’s central engineering question is whether lightweight composite booms can be compactly stored inside a small spacecraft and then extend reliably in orbit. The four booms support the sail and are approximately 23 feet (7 meters) long each when deployed.

NASA public affairs officer Arezu Sarvestani described the objective in NASA’s August 26, 2024 update: “One of the primary objectives of this technology demonstration is to test the expanding boom system, which has never been deployed for a solar sail on a spacecraft of this size.”

A large sail from a CubeSat

ACS3 uses a 12U CubeSat bus. Demonstrating a sail of this scale from such a small spacecraft could help engineers design future missions that need a large lightweight structure without launching a correspondingly large spacecraft.

How solar-sail propulsion works

A solar sail does not push against a physical atmosphere. Photons from sunlight carry momentum; when they reflect from the sail, they transfer some of that momentum to the spacecraft. The force is tiny, but it acts continuously while the sail is illuminated.

Changing the sail’s angle changes the direction of solar-radiation pressure. NASA compared the concept with a sailboat changing its sail angle relative to the wind. In the July 2024 pre-deployment update, operators said they hoped to test propulsion and maneuverability by raising and lowering the spacecraft’s orbit.

Those orbit-raising and orbit-lowering maneuvers were described as planned activities in that update. The deployment itself is confirmed; the available mission updates do not establish that every proposed maneuver was completed or quantify its results.

How big is the ACS3 sail?

Component Specification Qualification
Solar sail Approximately 30 feet (9 meters) per side About 860 square feet (80 square meters), according to NASA mission material
Deployable booms Four, approximately 23 feet (7 meters) each NASA ACS3 technology overview
Spacecraft 12U CubeSat Technology-demonstration spacecraft
Potential future sail size Up to 500 square meters (5,400 square feet) Prospective use of the demonstrated composite-boom technology, not ACS3’s size
Follow-on boom concepts Up to 2,000 square meters (21,500 square feet) Future technology under development, not a demonstrated ACS3 capability

NASA also described the deployed square sail as roughly half the size of a tennis court. The measured dimensions above are more precise.

Deployment timeline and later spacecraft status

Date Event
April 23, 2024 ACS3 launched on a Rocket Lab Electron from Māhia, New Zealand, and was released from the rocket’s kick stage.
August 26, 2024 An initial unfurling attempt paused after higher-than-expected motor currents were detected. NASA reported normal communications, power, and attitude control.
August 29, 2024 NASA confirmed that the sail was fully deployed after a successful sail-hoisting boom-system test.
September 5, 2024 NASA reported that the spacecraft was slowly tumbling as expected during the planned deployment sequence. Attitude control was to be re-engaged after the motion was characterized.
October 22, 2024 NASA said boom-performance analysis continued and noted a slight bend in one boom. The agency said the deployment data was already valuable for future sail missions.

The September status was a dated operational update, not a statement about the spacecraft’s present-day attitude. Likewise, NASA’s report of a slight bend did not say that the spacecraft had failed.

What ACS3 can—and cannot—show

What the demonstration can establish

  • Whether composite booms can deploy from a small spacecraft and support a large reflective membrane.
  • How the boom system behaves under real orbital thermal, mechanical, and lighting conditions.
  • Engineering data useful for designing larger solar-sail structures.

What it does not establish by itself

  • That ACS3 has traveled to deep space or reached another celestial body.
  • That all planned orbit-changing tests produced a particular amount of thrust or maneuverability.
  • That future 500-square-meter or 2,000-square-meter sails are already flight-proven.

Solar sail versus solar panel

The deployed sail is a propulsion device, not an electrical generator. Solar panels on the spacecraft produce electricity for its systems; the reflective sail uses sunlight pressure to produce a small continuous force. NASA’s July 2024 update discussed the solar panels separately from the then-unfurled sail.

Why the deployment matters

Conventional spacecraft often need large amounts of propellant or heavy structural hardware to maneuver and support deployed equipment. A successful lightweight boom-and-sail architecture could eventually enable lower-mass propulsion systems and very large surfaces launched in compact form. Those are potential future applications; ACS3’s confirmed achievement is the orbital deployment and the engineering data gathered from it.
