LignoSat is a 10-centimeter CubeSat whose structural enclosure is made from Japanese honoki (magnolia) wood. Developed by Kyoto University and Sumitomo Forestry, its first unit launched in November 2024, was released from the International Space Station (ISS), and operated in orbit for a reported four months. The mission showed that a wood-based spacecraft structure can function in the vacuum of space—but it did not achieve reliable communications with ground stations.
What is LignoSat?
LignoSat is a 100-millimeter CubeSat built by Kyoto University and Sumitomo Forestry. “Wooden satellite” describes its enclosure, not every component: metal parts were retained to meet the ISS small-satellite deployment mechanism’s requirements. The project began in 2020.
| Feature | What is established |
|---|---|
| Class and size | CubeSat; 10 cm (100 mm) cube |
| Primary enclosure material | Japanese honoki (magnolia) wood |
| Joinery | Traditional interlocking dovetail-style construction |
| Launch and deployment | Launched from Kennedy Space Center in November 2024, then released from the ISS |
| First mission duration | Four months in orbit, according to JapanGov’s April 2026 account |

Why honoki wood and traditional joinery?
Material selection
The team compared woods and selected honoki for its workability and dimensional stability. The enclosure panels were reported as 4 mm thick, with craftsmen working to tolerances as fine as 0.1 mm. JapanGov’s project feature describes these construction details.

Interlocking joints instead of conventional fasteners
The enclosure uses interlocking wooden joints to avoid fasteners whose different thermal-expansion behavior could stress the wood as the spacecraft heats and cools. This is an engineering choice for the enclosure, not evidence that ordinary wooden structures are automatically space-ready.
What testing happened before launch?
Kyoto University exposed three wood specimens outside the ISS’s Kibo module for more than 240 days in 2022. Its report says the samples returned without visible deformation or mass change in a preliminary inspection after exposure to temperature changes and cosmic radiation. The work also included strength testing plus elemental and crystal-structure analysis.

The university describes the experiment as lasting ten months as well as more than 240 days; those are the source’s own descriptions of the exposure project. The results support the stability of those tested samples under that test, not the long-term durability of every wood species, spacecraft design, or mission profile. What did the first satellite accomplish?
The demonstrated result
LignoSat’s first unit was sent to the ISS after its November 2024 launch and released into orbit. JapanGov reports that it completed a four-month orbital mission. The defensible headline result is a feasibility demonstration: a satellite with a wooden structural enclosure operated in the vacuum of space.

The unresolved communications problem
Reliable communication with the ground was not achieved. Project leader Takao Doi attributed the suspected trouble to software and a malfunction in antenna deployment, and the team began working on fixes for a successor. The mission therefore should not be described as completing all planned communications or data-return objectives.
Doi summarized the outcome in JapanGov’s April 2026 feature: “While the trouble we had establishing reliable communication with the ground has yet to be resolved, we achieved our primary objective: to determine whether a wooden satellite can indeed operate in the vacuum of space.”

Why build satellites from wood?
Potential reentry benefits
The project is partly motivated by concern that metal spacecraft can create alumina particles when they burn up during atmospheric reentry. Kyoto Prefecture describes a possible reduction in that impact as an expected benefit. No source cited here reports a measured LignoSat reentry-emissions comparison or a quantified climate benefit, so the environmental case remains a potential advantage rather than a mission result.
Doi told JapanGov: “With projections of 10,000 to 100,000 satellite launches every year, the accumulation of these alumina particles could exert a substantial negative impact on the climate and on aviation infrastructure.” Those figures are his projections, not a measured count of launches in a particular year. The project description is available from Kyoto Prefecture.

What wood could change—and what it cannot
Wood can replace some enclosure material, but LignoSat still depends on non-wood systems such as electronics, power hardware, and deployment-compatible metal components. The mission does not establish wood as a drop-in replacement for all satellite metals.

LignoSat-1R
As of JapanGov’s April 2026 account, the team was improving a second unit, LignoSat-1R, to address the suspected software and antenna issues. Its next launch was slated for fiscal year 2027. That schedule is a plan and may change.
LignoSat-2
A third version, LignoSat-2, was described as planned to use a flat communications antenna stored inside the spacecraft. This is a proposed design, not a demonstrated flight result. Kyoto University’s student-team explanation provides additional project context at its 2025 overview.
What LignoSat does—and does not—prove
- It does prove feasibility at a basic level: the wooden enclosure survived launch, deployment, and a reported four months in orbit while operating in vacuum.
- It does not prove reliable satellite service: ground communications remained unresolved on the first mission.
- It does not quantify environmental savings: no measured reentry-emissions comparison is reported in the cited sources.
- It does not establish a disaster network: direct space-to-ground communication after terrestrial towers are toppled is an application under consideration, not a deployed service.
- It does not demonstrate off-world forestry: growing trees or building with timber on the Moon or Mars remains a long-term research vision.
The practical takeaway
LignoSat is best understood as a carefully tested materials demonstrator, not an all-wood spacecraft or a finished communications platform. Honoki, precision joinery, and ISS exposure tests enabled a real orbital proof that wood can serve as satellite structure. The next engineering test is whether successors can deliver dependable communications while retaining those material and manufacturing advantages.
