To take a screenshot on a Google Pixel 9a, open the screen you want to save and press the Power and Volume down buttons at the same time. The phone saves the image and shows a preview near the bottom of the display. Tap the preview to open, edit, or share it.
The quickest Pixel 9a screenshot method
- Open the app, webpage, message, or other screen you want to capture.
- Press Power and Volume down simultaneously.
- Wait for the screenshot preview to appear near the lower edge of the screen.
- Tap the preview if you want to view or edit the image immediately. Otherwise, it remains saved for later.
This is the standard button shortcut documented in Google’s Pixel screenshot instructions and is the appropriate method for the Pixel 9a. Pressing both buttons together matters; pressing one first may change the volume or lock the phone instead.
How to capture a full, scrolling page
For a long webpage, conversation, settings list, or document, take a normal screenshot first. If the current view supports scrolling, a Capture more option appears in the screenshot controls.
- Press Power + Volume down.
- Tap Capture more in the screenshot toolbar.
- Drag the crop handles to include the additional content you need.
- Tap Save or the equivalent confirmation control shown on your phone.
Google says scrolling screenshots require Android 12 or later and work on most, but not every, scrollable screen. An app can omit support, or the current view may not expose enough scrollable content for Capture more to appear. The option is therefore conditional rather than a guarantee for every app or webpage. Take a screenshot from the app switcher
Android also provides a Screenshot control in the recent-apps screen. The exact gesture depends on the navigation mode selected on your Pixel 9a.
With gesture navigation
- Swipe up from the bottom edge of the screen and hold until the recent-apps view appears.
- Find the app you want to capture.
- Tap Screenshot beneath the app preview.
With three-button navigation
- Tap the Overview button to open recent apps.
- Select the app you want to capture.
- Tap Screenshot.
Google’s two-button navigation directions for older Pixel 3a-and-earlier phones are not the Pixel 9a procedure. Use the gesture or three-button path that matches your current navigation setting.
Use your voice
If Google Assistant is available, say “Hey Google, take a screenshot.” Google lists this as an alternative Pixel screenshot command. It is useful when touching both hardware buttons is awkward, such as when the phone is mounted or connected to another device.
Find, edit, and share the screenshot
- Open Google Photos.
- Tap Collections.
- Choose On this device.
- Open Screenshots.
From that folder you can open an image, crop or annotate it with Photos’ editing tools, and share it through another app. If you used Screen record instead of a still screenshot, look in Collections > On this device > Movies.

Record the screen instead of taking a still image
A screenshot is a single frame. For a demonstration, scrolling action, or troubleshooting video, use Android’s built-in screen recorder.
- Swipe down twice from the top of the display to open the full Quick Settings panel.
- Tap Screen record.
- Choose whether to record audio and whether to show touches, then start the countdown.
- When finished, stop the recording from the Screen recorder notification.
If Screen record is not visible, tap the Quick Settings edit control and add the tile. Android’s documented workflow and the storage location for recordings are described in Google Android Help.
Troubleshoot Pixel 9a screenshots
The buttons change the volume or lock the phone
The two buttons were probably not pressed at the same time. Return to the target screen and press Power and Volume down together in one deliberate motion. A screenshot preview should appear if the shortcut registered.
There is no Capture more button
Capture more is limited to Android 12 and later and to most scrollable screens. Confirm that the page or list actually scrolls, then take a fresh screenshot and check the toolbar immediately. A non-scrollable view or an app that does not expose scrolling capture will not offer the option.
The app-switcher Screenshot control is missing
Open recent apps using the navigation method currently enabled on the phone: swipe up and hold for gesture navigation, or tap Overview for three-button navigation. The Screenshot control is shown for the selected app preview, not as a replacement for the hardware shortcut in every context.
The screenshot is difficult to locate
Use the exact Photos path Collections > On this device > Screenshots. Screen recordings use the separate Movies folder. Looking in the general Photos timeline can be slower when many images were recently added.
Screen record is not in Quick Settings
Swipe down twice, open the Quick Settings editor, and add the Screen record tile. After recording, stop from its notification rather than closing the app that was on screen.
The voice command does not start a capture
Use the Power-and-Volume-down shortcut or the app-switcher method instead. Voice capture depends on Google Assistant being available and recognizing the command; the physical-button shortcut does not require speaking.

Which method should you use?
- Use Power + Volume down for a quick still image from almost any screen.
- Use Capture more when the content extends below the display and the app supports Android’s scrolling capture.
- Use the app switcher when you prefer an on-screen control or cannot comfortably press both buttons.
