To make Greenshot handle the Print Screen key in Windows 11, turn off Windows’ Use the Print screen key to open screen capture setting, restart Greenshot, and confirm the key is assigned to the capture action you want. If another utility has claimed the key, disable that utility’s screenshot shortcut or choose an unused Greenshot hotkey.
Greenshot is a background application rather than a Windows file-association choice. It runs from the notification area, and its configured hotkeys start captures. The practical meaning of making it your default screenshot app is therefore giving Greenshot ownership of the shortcut you press most often, usually Print Screen. Greenshot’s help page explains its tray menu and customizable capture keys.
Disable Windows 11’s Print Screen capture assignment
- Open the Windows Start menu and search for open screen. Greenshot’s Windows 11 instructions use this search to locate the setting named Use the Print screen key to open screen capture.
- Turn Use the Print screen key to open screen capture off. This stops Windows from routing Print Screen to its built-in screen-capture function instead of allowing Greenshot to receive it. The setting is described in Greenshot’s Print Screen troubleshooting guide.
- Restart Greenshot. Exit it from the notification-area icon, then launch it again. Greenshot normally remains available in the background through that icon.
Confirm Greenshot owns the intended hotkey
- Open Greenshot’s settings from its notification-area icon.
- Review the capture-hotkey assignments and make sure Print Screen is assigned to the action you want, such as capturing a region, window, or full screen. Greenshot documents customizable capture hotkeys in its help.
- Close the settings and press Print Screen once. The result should follow the action shown in Greenshot’s hotkey configuration. If nothing happens, leave Greenshot running and continue with the conflict checks below.
What to check when Print Screen still does not work
Another application has reserved the key
Greenshot specifically identifies Microsoft OneDrive and Dropbox as applications whose screenshot features can interfere with Print Screen. Open each application’s screenshot or automatic-save settings. Turn off the competing Print Screen feature, or assign Greenshot a different unused combination. See the documented conflict guidance in Greenshot’s FAQ.
Greenshot is not running in the background
Look for the Greenshot icon in the notification area. If it is absent, start Greenshot and repeat the test. The tray icon is the normal entry point for its settings and manual capture commands, as described in the official help.

Print Screen is assigned to the wrong Greenshot action
A key can appear to be working while launching an unexpected capture mode if it is mapped differently than you expect. Reopen Greenshot’s settings, inspect the hotkey rows, and assign Print Screen to the desired action. Test again after saving the change.
Use a different shortcut when the key cannot be freed
If OneDrive, Dropbox, or another required utility must keep Print Screen, choose another unused combination in Greenshot’s hotkey settings. This avoids a fight over the same key while preserving Greenshot’s capture workflow. Greenshot’s troubleshooting page lists an alternative hotkey as the practical workaround when Print Screen remains unavailable.

Special-key combinations and the Windows key
Greenshot’s FAQ notes that some special keys, including the Windows key, cannot be entered directly in the hotkey panel. To configure such a combination, exit Greenshot completely, edit the relevant hotkey entry in its configuration file, and start Greenshot again. Follow the procedure in How can I use the Windows key as global hotkey for Greenshot?. Do not edit the file while Greenshot is running, because the application may overwrite the change when it closes.

- Greenshot has been restarted after the Windows change.
- The Greenshot notification-area icon is visible.
- Print Screen is assigned to the intended capture action in Greenshot’s settings.
- OneDrive, Dropbox, and any other screenshot utility are not claiming the same key.
- Pressing Print Screen produces the configured Greenshot behavior.
If every item is true and the key still fails, use an unused Greenshot shortcut. That separates a keyboard-level or software-conflict problem from Greenshot’s capture configuration.
Version and Windows-edition notes
The Greenshot help page reviewed for these instructions displays version 1.2.10. Menu wording can differ in a later Greenshot release, so use the equivalent settings and hotkey controls in the version installed on your PC. The documented Windows route is specifically for Windows 11; the setting name and location may differ on another Windows edition.
