Windows 11 taskbar customization is expanding in stages. The August 27, 2026 update for Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 adds bottom, top, left and right taskbar positions, a smaller taskbar size and a broader Taskbar behaviors section. A September 22, 2026 Windows 11 26H1 preview expands those behaviors by default and improves system-tray loading reliability. Availability depends on your Windows version, installed update, device, market and rollout channel.

What changed in Windows 11 taskbar pinning?

The changes affect both where the taskbar sits and how much space it consumes. They build on earlier improvements rather than replacing the normal pinning workflow.

Capability What is established Availability qualification
Taskbar position Bottom, top, left or right edge of the screen Added in the August 27, 2026 update for Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2; rollout may be staged
Smaller taskbar A reduced taskbar size for higher information density Added in the same 24H2/25H2 update; not guaranteed on every device immediately
Taskbar behaviors An expanded settings section for taskbar behavior choices Expanded by default in the September 22, 2026 Windows 11 26H1 preview
System-tray loading Improved reliability while tray items load Documented for the 26H1 preview, not a promise that every production build has it
Adaptive icon scaling Icons can shrink automatically when the taskbar is full Introduced in a July 11, 2025 Canary announcement; the setting offers “When taskbar is full,” “Never” or “Always”

Microsoft describes the taskbar as the place to launch apps, switch between open windows and reach notifications, Search and Start. These updates give users more control over its placement and density without changing those core functions.

Can you move or resize the Windows 11 taskbar?

Move it to another edge

On builds that include the August 2026 taskbar update, open Settings > Personalization > Taskbar and look for the taskbar position or alignment controls in the expanded taskbar settings. Choose Bottom, Top, Left or Right. If those choices are absent, your build may not yet have the feature, the rollout may not have reached your device, or your edition may be on a different servicing path.

Use a smaller taskbar

In the same taskbar settings area, select the smaller taskbar option when it is available. This reduces the taskbar’s footprint; it does not change the applications pinned to it.

Control icon density

Adaptive icon scaling is intended for crowded taskbars. Set it to When taskbar is full for automatic reduction only when space runs out, Never to keep the normal icon size, or Always to favor the smallest presentation. The July 2025 Canary announcement introduced these choices, so their presence depends on the build and rollout status.

How to pin, reorder and remove an app

Pin an app from Search

  1. Open Search from the taskbar or press the Windows key and type the app name.
  2. Right-click the app in the results.
  3. Select Pin to taskbar.

Pin an app that is already running

  1. Launch the app.
  2. Right-click its icon on the taskbar.
  3. Select Pin to taskbar.

Reorder or unpin

Drag a pinned icon to a new position to reorder it. To remove it, right-click the icon and choose Unpin from taskbar.

Use a pinned app’s jump list

Right-clicking a pinned app can show recent files and frequently used actions in its jump list. The entries depend on the application and its activity; pinning an app does not guarantee that every jump-list command will appear.

What changes on a managed PC?

Organizations can deploy taskbar layouts through XML. Microsoft’s taskbar-layout documentation includes the PinGeneration attribute for supported policy pins.

Policy pins that users may remove

On supported Windows 11 24H2 devices with KB5060829 and Windows 11 23H2 devices with KB5060826, administrators can mark selected policy-pinned apps as removable by the user. This lets a user unpin the app instead of having every policy refresh force it back.

Persistence after policy refresh

PinGeneration is designed to prevent selected pins from being automatically repinned during the next policy update cycle after the user removes them. Administrators should validate the XML and the device’s installed update before relying on that behavior; unsupported builds may continue enforcing the older policy behavior.

Why your PC may not show every option

  • Different Windows release: The August changes target 24H2 and 25H2, while the September 22 item is a 26H1 preview.
  • Preview versus production: A preview feature is not evidence that the same control is present in the current stable release.
  • Staged rollout: Microsoft can enable features gradually, including through controlled feature rollouts.
  • Device and market differences: Microsoft warns that Windows features can vary by device and market.
  • Servicing timing: Windows 11 feature work may appear first in optional nonsecurity previews and later in monthly security updates.

To check for a delivered update, open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. Installing an update does not guarantee immediate access to every feature because rollout controls can remain in effect.

Which configuration should you choose?

Your priority Suggested configuration Trade-off
Traditional Windows layout Bottom position and default size Uses more vertical space than the smaller setting
More vertical workspace Top, left or right position, if available Changes the location of Start, Search and task switching
Many pinned or open apps Smaller taskbar plus “When taskbar is full” scaling Icons may become harder to distinguish when space is tight
Consistent corporate layout Administrator XML policy User control depends on policy settings and supported updates
User-controlled corporate pins XML with supported PinGeneration behavior Requires the documented Windows version and KB prerequisite

How Microsoft is delivering these improvements

Windows 11’s servicing model delivers feature work incrementally. Microsoft’s Windows 11 25H2 IT guidance says new capabilities can arrive in optional nonsecurity preview updates and later in monthly security updates, with controlled rollouts used for some features. The Windows 11 2025 Update overview likewise says features may continue rolling out and can differ by device and market.

That model explains why two PCs reporting the same broad Windows 11 release can expose different taskbar controls at the same time. Check the exact version, update history and taskbar settings rather than assuming that an announced feature is already enabled.
