This warning refers to Kali Linux’s April 28, 2025 announcement that a new archive signing key would cause APT updates to fail on many systems until the key was updated. If your error names missing key 827C8569F2518CC677FECA1ED65462EC8D5E4C5 or reports an expired signing key, follow Kali’s official keyring recovery steps below. The warning is historical, not a notice that all Kali systems are currently unable to update.
What the Kali update warning meant
Kali said that “In the coming day(s), pretty much every Kali system out there will fail to update.” That was the project’s qualitative warning, not a measured estimate of the share of affected computers or the length of an outage. The problem was a changed Kali repository signing key, and the reported APT failure identified missing key 827C8569F2518CC677FECA1ED65462EC8D5E4C5.
APT verifies repository metadata signatures before trusting package indexes. If your system lacks the key needed for that check, APT refuses to treat the repository data as trusted. This is a security safeguard—not a reason to turn signature verification off. Kali’s signing-key guide describes this as an outdated or incorrect local archive key and provides recovery guidance.
Check whether the signing key is your problem
Match the error before changing your keyring. The recovery command below applies to the missing Kali archive key or a related expired-key signature error. Other APT failures can have different causes:

- Missing or expired key: APT reports a missing key, or an
EXPKEYSIGsignature error. Check Kali’s archive-keyring guidance. - Dependency or package transition: APT reports unmet dependencies, packages kept back, or proposed removals. Review the upgrade plan and Kali’s common APT problems guidance.
- Repository configuration: The configured suite, source file, or mirror may not match Kali’s supported setup. Compare it with Kali’s network repository documentation.
- Development branch: If your sources use
kali-dev, instability may be expected. Kali recommends Rolling for most users; see its branch guidance.
Restore the Kali archive key
For the exact missing-key symptom, Kali’s April 2025 announcement gave this command to download its archive keyring from the official Kali archive and save it at the system keyring path:
sudo wget https://archive.kali.org/archive-keyring.gpg -O /usr/share/keyrings/kali-archive-keyring.gpgRun it only after confirming that your error matches the signing-key problem, and check Kali’s current official instructions before using a privileged command. The command restores the key APT uses to verify repository metadata; do not disable signature checks or accept unverifiable repository data instead.

Kali also recommends keeping the kali-archive-keyring package up to date. The project says it extends or replaces its repository signing key every 2–3 years, so a machine left unupdated for a long time may have an expired or outdated key.
Update Kali after the key is fixed

- Check that your repository configuration uses Kali’s supported repository and suite.
- Refresh package indexes:
sudo apt update. - Review the proposed changes, then run
sudo apt full-upgradeif the plan is appropriate.
Read the package-removal list before confirming a full upgrade. Kali notes that rolling-release transitions can require removals and that full-upgrade can sometimes remove important packages. If you encounter a complicated dependency conflict, pause rather than forcing a potentially damaging change; trying again after repository packages have changed can be reasonable. Kali asks users to report reproducible Kali package issues through its bug tracker.
Check that your repositories are configured for Kali
Kali identifies kali-rolling as the main repository suite for most users. Its repository documentation says current installations use /etc/apt/sources.list.d/kali.sources; systems installed before Kali 2026.2 may instead use the older one-line format in /etc/apt/sources.list. Both formats can work. Follow Kali’s current repository configuration instructions rather than adding another distribution’s repositories: mixing operating-system packages can break a Kali installation.

Do not switch to a development branch as a workaround for a signing-key error. Kali says most users should use kali-rolling and warns that kali-dev regularly breaks and is not intended for end users.
When to update
Kali’s update guidance suggests checking for updates every few days or weeks on a default installation. It also advises users to confirm their tools work before an engagement and avoid updating during the engagement when tool stability matters.
