Total Commander 8 Beta introduced the file manager’s first dedicated 64-bit build, but it was a test release—not a safe replacement for the stable version on a work PC or a machine holding critical data. Its biggest practical drawback was plugin compatibility: 64-bit plugins had to be recoded, and few were available at first.
What Total Commander 8 Beta introduced
Total Commander 8 Beta was the first Total Commander release to offer a dedicated 64-bit build. BetaNews reported on 19 September 2011 that the beta was for testing and quoted the warning: “Version 8 is not designed to be run on production machines.” The report recommended stable Total Commander 7.56 for users who needed a dependable file manager. BetaNews’ 2011 report describes the beta’s purpose and plugin situation.
The beta was not simply a stable release with a different architecture option. It introduced a new 64-bit build while the software and plugin ecosystem were still adapting. The maintained change log records version 8.0 as the first 64-bit version, developed in parallel with versions 7.57 and 7.57a. Ghisler Software’s change log records that milestone.
Should you use the beta on your main PC?
No, not if you depend on Total Commander for routine work or use it to manage critical files. The beta’s own reported warning was explicit: it was not designed for production machines. A beta can contain bugs, and a file manager has access to actions such as moving, renaming, and deleting files. A separate distributor announcement also cautioned that beta software may contain numerous bugs and should not be used with critical data. TotalCommander.pl’s beta announcement gives that warning and describes installing the beta alongside an existing installation.

For ordinary use at the time, BetaNews directed users to stable version 7.56 rather than the beta. If you wanted to evaluate the new architecture, the practical approach was to test it separately and avoid relying on it for important work; the distributor announcement said it could be installed beside an existing installation. That is a historical description of the 2011 beta, not a claim that the beta is a suitable current download or a supported option today.
Why plugins could fail in the 64-bit build
A 32-bit plugin could not simply be assumed to work in the 64-bit executable. BetaNews reported that most third-party plugins would work with Total Commander 8.0 32-bit, while plugins needed recoding for 64-bit. This meant users could have a working plugin setup in the 32-bit build but lose parts of that workflow when switching to 64-bit.

When Total Commander 8.0 final arrived, author Christian Ghisler confirmed the transition problem in the official forum: “Currently there aren’t many 64-bit plugins yet.” He recommended keeping the 32-bit version for users who regularly relied on plugins. The same advice appeared in the 8.01 release note. See the official 8.0 announcement and official 8.01 announcement.
32-bit or 64-bit: which should you choose?
| Choice | Plugin coverage | Existing extensions | Best fit during the version 8 transition |
|---|---|---|---|
| 32-bit | Broader availability was the safer assumption; Ghisler said few 64-bit plugins existed in 2012. | Most third-party plugins were reported to work with the 32-bit version. | Users who regularly depended on plugins or wanted continuity with an existing setup. |
| 64-bit | Limited initially; plugins needed to be recoded for 64-bit. | A 32-bit plugin could not be presumed compatible with the 64-bit build. | Users who specifically needed the 64-bit build and had verified that required plugins were available in 64-bit form. |
The architecture choice was therefore less about a general performance claim—the cited release information provides no benchmark—and more about whether your extensions were available in the matching build. If plugin support mattered more than using 64-bit, the developer’s 2012 advice was to retain 32-bit.

What happened after the beta?
Total Commander 8.0 final became available on 23 May 2012. Ghisler described it as the first version offered in both 32-bit and 64-bit. Version 8.01 followed on 3 August 2012, and its release note again advised regular plugin users to keep the 32-bit version because there were not many 64-bit plugins. Those milestones explain why the beta’s main significance was introducing the 64-bit option—not establishing that every user should switch to it.
