What is the Notepad Markdown vulnerability?
CVE-2026-20841 affects the newer Markdown functionality in Windows 11 Notepad. Windows Central describes the underlying issue, attributing the wording to Microsoft, as “improper neutralization of special elements in a command (‘command injection’).” The problem involves how Notepad handles clickable links in Markdown documents.
A crafted link could cause Notepad to launch an unverified protocol or remote file. The reported impact is potential remote code execution or execution of remote files. This is not described as an attack that automatically runs merely because a file exists on a computer: it relies on a victim opening the document and interacting with its malicious link.
Can a malicious Markdown link run malware?
It could provide an attacker a path to execute remote content, but the reported scenario requires user interaction and social engineering. An attacker would need to persuade someone to open a malicious Markdown document and follow its link. TechRadar reported that the flaw could enable remote code execution without the usual operating-system warning; the available reporting does not establish an exploit count, victim count, or how widely the flaw was used.

Treat unexpected Markdown files and their links with the same caution as other untrusted attachments. Avoid opening or clicking them unless you can verify the sender and destination.
How to protect your PC
Install the Microsoft security update
Microsoft shipped a fix in the February 10, 2026 security update cycle. On a personal PC, use Windows Update to install all applicable Windows security updates. If your device is managed by an employer or school, follow its update process or contact IT rather than trying to bypass update controls.

Administrators can check Microsoft’s Security Update Guide for the authoritative vulnerability and update information, including applicable product scope. Windows Central reported the February 10 fix; confirm the relevant update for the organization’s Windows 11 systems in Microsoft’s guide and managed deployment tools.
Use caution until the update is installed
- Do not open Markdown files from unknown or unexpected sources.
- Do not follow links in Markdown documents unless you trust the source and have verified the destination.
- Apply the applicable Microsoft security update as soon as your normal update process permits.
What should you use to fix it?
Use Microsoft’s security update. A third-party replacement for Notepad is not the remediation for CVE-2026-20841, and a general maintenance utility does not substitute for installing the Windows update. For organizations, verify patch applicability and deployment through Microsoft’s security guidance and your managed update system.
