iPadOS 18 makes Apple Pencil more useful for maths, handwritten notes and visual ideas. The September 16, 2024 release introduced Calculator’s Math Notes and Notes’ Smart Script. Apple Intelligence features arrived later, beginning with iPadOS 18.1 on supported iPads, while Image Wand reached Notes in iPadOS 18.2. These features require different hardware and rollout conditions, so iPadOS 18 does not give every iPad the same Pencil experience.
What changed for Apple Pencil at the iPadOS 18 launch?
Apple announced iPadOS 18 on June 10, 2024 and released it as a free update on September 16, 2024. The launch-day Pencil improvements centered on two apps: Calculator and Notes.

How Math Notes works with Apple Pencil
Write or type an expression
In Calculator, you can write an equation with Apple Pencil or enter it with the keyboard. iPadOS interprets the expression and shows the result alongside it, turning the page into a working calculation rather than a static drawing.
Use variables and graphs
Apple describes Math Notes as supporting variables and graphing equations. That makes it useful for exploring relationships between values, checking schoolwork and keeping calculations alongside the handwritten reasoning that produced them.

Math Notes is not confined to the Calculator app. Apple says it can be accessed in Notes, so a calculation can sit with a project outline, class notes or other handwritten material.
What Smart Script adds to handwritten notes
Edit without rewriting the page
Smart Script lets you insert room between words, add typed text that matches the handwriting-like appearance, and scratch out text to remove it. These are direct edits to handwriting rather than separate annotation tools.

When Apple Intelligence arrived on iPad
Apple Intelligence was announced with iPadOS 18 but was not part of the September 16 launch in its complete form. Apple said the first features would arrive in beta with iPadOS 18.1; Apple announced that first set on October 28, 2024.

iPadOS 18.1
The initial Apple Intelligence rollout included the first set of system intelligence features for compatible iPads. Its availability was separate from the launch-day Math Notes and Smart Script update.
iPadOS 18.2 and Image Wand
Apple’s December 2024 iPadOS 18.2 announcement added Image Playground, Genmoji, Writing Tools enhancements and Image Wand in Notes. With Image Wand, a sketch and the surrounding note can provide context for an image-generation request. Therefore, Image Wand is an iPadOS 18-era Apple Pencil feature, but not an iPadOS 18.0 launch feature.

Which iPads support the intelligence features?
Apple’s later availability announcement specifies iPad models with an M1 chip or later for Apple Intelligence. The June preview used the broader wording “iPad models with an M-series chip.” Apple also cautions that features can vary by device, region and language, and the preview initially described U.S. English availability with additional languages planned.
- Math Notes and Smart Script: introduced with iPadOS 18, but the exact Pencil experience still depends on the iPad model and compatible Apple Pencil.
- Apple Intelligence and Image Wand: require an iPad with M1 or later under Apple’s stated availability requirements, plus a supported language and region.
- Current support: dated launch announcements are not a substitute for checking Apple’s current compatibility information, because availability can change.
Do you need a particular Apple Pencil?
Apple Pencil is the relevant accessory for the handwriting features, but Apple’s iPadOS 18 announcements do not provide a complete, model-by-model Pencil compatibility matrix. Do not choose a Pencil generation from the operating-system name alone.

- Identify the exact iPad model and year in Settings under General > About.
- Check which Apple Pencil models that iPad supports in Apple’s current compatibility information.
- Confirm that the iPad is updated to the iPadOS version containing the feature you want.
- For Apple Intelligence features, verify the M1-or-later requirement and the supported language and region.
What iPadOS 18 means for different Pencil users
Students and problem-solvers
Math Notes combines handwriting, typed input, variables and graphs in one place, making it the most direct upgrade for mathematical work.
People who take long handwritten notes
Smart Script addresses the friction of revising a handwritten page: you can create space, insert text and delete a mistake without starting over.
Visual planners and sketchers
Image Wand is the later addition to watch for. In iPadOS 18.2, it connects sketches and note context to Image Playground, but it belongs to the Apple Intelligence rollout rather than the original iPadOS 18 release.
Bottom line on iPadOS 18 and Apple Pencil
The most important launch-day changes are Math Notes and Smart Script. Apple Intelligence broadened the Pencil-related possibilities later, with Image Wand arriving in iPadOS 18.2. Check the exact iPad, compatible Pencil, M1-or-later requirement for intelligence features, and language or regional availability before assuming every iPadOS 18 feature will work on your setup.
