Fedora Asahi Remix 41 is Fedora Linux 41 adapted for Apple Silicon Macs. Released on December 17, 2024, it combined Asahi hardware support with a conformant Vulkan 1.4 graphics stack and integrated FEX-based x86/x86-64 emulation. It remains an important release, but it is no longer the current download target: the live Asahi project page now presents Fedora Asahi Remix based on Fedora Linux 44.
What Fedora Asahi Remix 41 introduced
Fedora Magazine announced general availability on December 17, 2024. The release was developed with the Fedora Asahi Special Interest Group and the Asahi Linux project to make Fedora Linux 41 usable on Apple Silicon hardware.
Remix 41 was more than a regular Fedora update for a different processor. It bundled Apple-specific kernel, firmware and hardware enablement with a desktop and graphics stack designed for the M-series Macs. It also integrated x86 compatibility tooling, addressing a major obstacle for users whose applications were built for Intel or AMD processors rather than ARM64.
Available editions
| Edition | What the release offered |
|---|---|
| KDE Plasma | KDE Plasma 6.2 flagship desktop edition |
| GNOME | GNOME 47 variant |
| Fedora Server | Server-oriented Fedora image for supported Apple Silicon Macs |
| Minimal | Minimal image for users who want to build their environment from a smaller base |
Graphics: Vulkan 1.4, OpenGL and OpenCL
The Asahi project describes Fedora Asahi Remix as shipping “the world’s first and only certified conformant OpenGL 4.6, OpenGL ES 3.2, OpenCL 3.0, and Vulkan 1.4 for Apple Silicon.” That is a standards-conformance statement from the project. It means the implementations passed the relevant conformance requirements; it is not a promise of a particular frame rate, rendering speed or battery-life result.

#1 Best Overall
For developers, conformance can remove API-version blockers that otherwise require workarounds or a different platform. For desktop users, it means modern Linux graphics applications can target Vulkan 1.4 and the listed OpenGL/OpenCL versions on supported Apple hardware. Actual performance still depends on the Mac model, application, workload and driver path.
How the x86 and x86-64 support works
Apple Silicon runs AArch64 code natively, while a large amount of Linux software is distributed as x86 or x86-64 binaries. Fedora’s FEX integration is intended to let those foreign-architecture programs run without requiring an ARM-native build.
Why Fedora uses a microVM
Apple Silicon Macs use a 16K page-size kernel. FEX expects 4K pages, so Fedora’s design runs FEX inside muvm, a micro-virtual-machine environment with a 4K-page kernel. The Mac continues to run its normal Apple Silicon Linux kernel while the emulated programs receive the page-size environment FEX requires.
FEX compared with other emulators
| Technology | Architecture coverage noted by Fedora | Design emphasis |
|---|---|---|
| FEX | x86 and x86-64 on AArch64; includes 32-bit x86 support | Faster out-of-the-box experience, integrated through the microVM design |
| QEMU | x86 and x86-64 on AArch64; includes 32-bit x86 support | Prioritizes correctness, with substantially lower speed according to Fedora’s engineering comparison |
| box64 | Covers some x86-64-on-AArch64 use cases | Different coverage and trade-offs from FEX and QEMU |
These are Fedora’s engineering distinctions, not independent benchmark results.

Yes, Remix 41’s FEX integration is designed to run many x86 and x86-64 Linux binaries on an ARM64 installation. Fedora specifically described the integration as including support aimed at AAA games. That makes it more practical than an ARM-only Linux desktop for software that has no native build.
“Can run” does not mean “every application or game works.” Compatibility depends on the binary, its libraries, graphics API, launcher and any platform-specific protection or service it requires. The release announcement and Fedora’s engineering proposal do not provide a universal compatibility list, a game-success percentage or comparative throughput figures. Treat FEX as an enabling compatibility layer, not as a guarantee that a particular Steam title will install or perform like its native x86 version.
Which Macs are supported?
The Asahi project hardware matrix lists supported M1 and M2 MacBook, Mac mini, Mac Pro, Mac Studio and iMac models. Support is model-specific: display output, keyboard and trackpad input, speakers, camera, USB-C, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth can have different status or caveats depending on the exact machine.
- Check the live Asahi hardware matrix for the precise model identifier before installing.
- Do not assume that two Macs with the same M-series chip have identical peripheral support.
- Asahi says it individually measured and calibrated eight or more machine models for its integrated DSP audio configurations, illustrating why audio behavior is handled per model.
The matrix is the authoritative place to verify a purchase or an installation plan because support details can change after Remix 41.

For a new installation, Fedora Magazine directed users to the Asahi installation guide rather than to a conventional Fedora ISO workflow. Use that guide together with the current hardware matrix, since Apple Silicon boot and storage setup are handled through the Asahi-specific process.
Rank #4
- Identify the exact Mac model and confirm it appears in the supported hardware matrix.
- Read the current Asahi installation guide for the supported installer and partitioning procedure.
- Select the Fedora Asahi edition you need: KDE Plasma, GNOME, Server or Minimal.
- Follow the guide’s Apple Silicon boot and installation steps, including any model-specific instructions.
- After first boot, apply Fedora updates through the normal Fedora package-management workflow.
The Fedora Workstation Software application was not supported for upgrading existing Fedora Asahi Remix installations, so do not treat it as the upgrade path for this platform.
Upgrading an existing Remix installation
At Remix 41 launch, systems running Remix 39 or Remix 40 could use Fedora’s normal release-upgrade process. Fedora’s March 18, 2025 Remix 42 Beta announcement likewise stated that Remix 40 and 41 systems could be upgraded through the usual Fedora process. Use Fedora’s documented command-line upgrade procedure for the release you are moving to, and check the Asahi project’s notes for Apple-specific issues before starting.

No. Remix 41 is a historical Fedora release reference. The live Asahi project page currently presents Fedora Asahi Remix based on Fedora Linux 44, so a new user should start with the current image and current installation instructions rather than searching for the old Remix 41 download.

Remix 41 still matters when you are documenting a 2024 installation, maintaining an existing system, or explaining when Vulkan 1.4 conformance and integrated FEX support arrived in Fedora’s Apple Silicon offering. For a fresh installation, current Fedora Asahi documentation determines the supported images, models and upgrade path.
Who should choose it?
- Apple Silicon owners who want Fedora: It provides a Fedora-native desktop or server environment with Apple hardware enablement.
- Developers using modern graphics APIs: The project-level conformance claims cover Vulkan 1.4, OpenGL 4.6, OpenGL ES 3.2 and OpenCL 3.0.
- Users dependent on x86 software: FEX can make many x86 and x86-64 binaries accessible without waiting for an ARM64 port.
- Users expecting guaranteed game compatibility: Verify each title and its dependencies; no universal success rate or performance benchmark is supplied for Remix 41.
- Owners of an unsupported or uncertain Mac model: Check the live matrix first instead of assuming compatibility from the processor name alone.
What the release does—and does not—promise
Remix 41’s durable contributions are platform enablement, graphics-API conformance and a practical x86 emulation path. The available release material does not establish comparative Vulkan frame rates, emulation throughput, battery-life changes or a percentage of Steam games that work. Those outcomes must be evaluated for the specific Mac, application and workload rather than inferred from the API version or the presence of FEX.
