SMART Modular Technologies announced its T6EN rugged PCIe/NVMe SSD family on November 4, 2024 for aerospace, defense and industrial systems. The Gen4 x4 drives use 3D TLC NAND and are offered in U.2, E1.S and M.2 2280 formats, with up to 15,360GB in U.2 and up to 7,680GB in the other two formats. Features include AES-XTS 256-bit encryption, OPAL 2.0, hardware write-protection, optional conformal coating and SafeDATA power-loss protection.
What the T6EN family is
T6EN is SMART Modular’s ruggedized flash-storage line for systems where ordinary client SSDs may not provide sufficient environmental, security or power-loss protection. SMART identifies flight-data recorders, sensor-data capture, high-reliability telemetry, surveillance, defense, aerospace and other mission-critical storage workloads as target applications.
The drives use a PCIe/NVMe Gen4x4 interface and 3D TLC flash memory. The specifications below are SMART Modular’s published claims; the available material does not establish independent benchmark results or a universal performance level across every capacity and form factor.
Capacities and form factors
| Form factor | Maximum capacity stated by SMART | Typical integration consideration |
|---|---|---|
| U.2 | Up to 15TB (15,360GB) | Requires a U.2 bay, cable and compatible PCIe/NVMe backplane or adapter. |
| E1.S | Up to 8TB (7,680GB) | Designed for systems with EDSFF E1.S bays and matching power, cooling and PCIe connectivity. |
| M.2 2280 | Up to 8TB (7,680GB) | Fits an M.2 2280 socket wired for PCIe/NVMe; the host must provide suitable retention and thermal management. |
Capacity is not the only compatibility check. Confirm the host’s PCIe generation, lane wiring, boot support, power budget, cooling, firmware requirements and physical clearances, then verify the exact T6EN SKU before procurement.

Performance claimed for the PCIe Gen4 interface
SMART’s 2024 product brief lists up to 3,500 MB/s sequential read, 3,200 MB/s sequential write and 390,000 read IOPS. These are vendor-stated maxima, not guarantees for every capacity, workload, queue depth or thermal condition. Random-write performance, latency, endurance ratings and the test configuration are not stated in the supplied specifications.
What those figures mean in practice
- Sequential figures are most relevant to sustained capture, imaging and large-file transfers.
- Read IOPS is an indicator for highly concurrent small-read workloads, but it does not describe application latency by itself.
- System-level results can be lower because of the host platform, firmware, queue depth, thermals, over-provisioning and workload mix.
Ruggedization and environmental operation
The industrial-temperature (I-Temp) version is specified for operation from -40°C to +85°C. SMART says its ruggedization includes higher signal-routing margins, thicker printed-circuit boards and durable enclosures. The company also reports eight-hour burn-in testing across wide temperature variation.
Optional conformal coating is intended to improve protection against moisture, thermal shock, static, vibration and contamination. Because coating is optional, buyers should confirm whether a selected part number includes it and whether the coating affects serviceability, connectors or system qualification.

Suitability for aerospace, defense and industrial equipment
The temperature range, mechanical construction, burn-in and optional coating address common environmental concerns in these sectors. They do not, by themselves, prove compliance with a particular aircraft, military, automotive, safety or qualification standard. Integrators should request the applicable qualification reports, vibration and shock data, mean-time or endurance information, operating-altitude limits and lifecycle commitments for the exact SKU.
Protection against sudden power loss
SafeDATA combines power-loss detection, hold-up circuitry and controller firmware. When a sudden outage is detected, the circuitry supplies temporary power while firmware flushes in-flight data from volatile cache to NAND. SMART’s stated goal is to prevent corruption or loss of data that had not yet reached nonvolatile storage.
SafeDATA reduces risk; it is not a substitute for system-level power integrity. Validate the drive with the host controller, filesystem, RAID or software-defined-storage layer, and test the actual outage scenarios, write patterns and recovery procedures used in the deployed system.

Security controls
- AES-XTS 256-bit encryption: hardware encryption for stored data when correctly configured with the platform’s key-management process.
- TCG Opal 2.0 compliance: supports standards-based self-encrypting-drive management where the host software and policy support Opal.
- Erase trigger: SMART describes a mechanism intended to initiate rapid data erasure under a configured trigger condition.
- Hardware write-protection: can help prevent modification of protected content, subject to the system’s implementation and controls.
Security features still require deployment work: define key ownership and recovery, configure Opal policies, control who can invoke an erase trigger, and verify that write-protection behaves as required during maintenance and incident response.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choosing U.2, E1.S or M.2 2280
Choose U.2 when capacity and serviceability dominate
U.2 is the only T6EN format with a stated maximum of 15,360GB. It is a practical choice when the platform already provides U.2 bays, cabling and hot-service procedures, and when the larger capacity reduces the number of drives required.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsChoose E1.S for an EDSFF-based platform
E1.S makes sense when the server or embedded system was designed around EDSFF bays, airflow and standardized front-access service. It offers the same stated 8TB maximum as M.2, but it cannot be inserted into an M.2 socket without an appropriate platform design.

Choose M.2 2280 for board-level integration
M.2 2280 is appropriate for systems with a compatible socket and constrained board space. Confirm that the socket is PCIe/NVMe rather than SATA-only, that the retention hardware suits the drive, and that the thermal solution can sustain the intended workload in the specified temperature range.
Procurement and qualification checklist
- Identify the required form factor, capacity and PCIe lane wiring.
- Request the exact SKU’s datasheet, firmware revision, endurance specification and environmental qualification documents.
- Confirm whether industrial-temperature operation and conformal coating are included or optional for that SKU.
- Validate AES-XTS, Opal, erase-trigger and hardware-write-protection behavior with the intended host software.
- Run power-interruption tests that include cached writes, filesystem recovery and repeated outages.
- Confirm availability, warranty, support lifecycle and current channel pricing directly with SMART Modular or an authorized distributor; these commercial terms are not established here.
