Jeff Williams left Apple’s chief operating officer role in July 2025 and formally retired in November 2025. Sabih Khan, Apple’s senior vice president of Operations, succeeded him as COO. What happened to Jeff Williams at Apple?
Apple announced on July 8, 2025 that Williams would hand over the COO position later that month. The company described the move as a long-planned succession, not a firing or an announced CEO-succession decision.
After the COO handoff, Williams continued reporting to CEO Tim Cook while overseeing Apple’s design team, Apple Watch and health initiatives. Apple said the design team would report directly to Cook after Williams retired.
A MacRumors report published November 15, 2025 said Williams had officially retired, with his final day on the preceding Friday. That places the completed departure in November 2025, distinct from the July change in COO.

Who replaced Jeff Williams as Apple COO?
Sabih Khan became Apple’s chief operating officer. Khan had been Apple’s senior vice president of Operations and had served on the executive team since 2019. Apple said he had worked at the company for 30 years and led its global supply chain for six years.

Why Jeff Williams was important to Apple’s supply chain
Apple credited Williams with building a supply chain capable of supporting customers and growth across the United States, China, India, Japan and Southeast Asia. His responsibilities included supplier-responsibility efforts as well as major iPod and iPhone programs.
Tim Cook said Williams helped create “one of the most respected global supply chains in the world.” Apple also credited him with launching and overseeing Apple Watch, architecting the company’s health strategy and leading its design organization.

Apple’s July 2025 announcement said Khan’s supply-chain work helped reduce Apple’s carbon footprint by more than 60 percent. That figure is an Apple-stated corporate claim, not an independently published performance study.
What changed after the COO handoff?
The timing
The COO succession took effect in July 2025. Williams’s broader Apple departure came later, in November, so describing him as “retired” for the entire period after the July announcement is inaccurate.

Between the two dates, Williams was no longer COO but still led design, Apple Watch and health initiatives. Those responsibilities ended with his retirement.
The design team’s reporting line
Apple said its design team would report directly to Cook after Williams retired. This is a structural change beyond simply naming a new COO.

Supply-chain continuity
Khan’s promotion preserves continuity in supply-chain leadership because he had already overseen Apple’s global network and supplier-responsibility work. The company therefore paired a change in title with an internal successor familiar with the operation.

Williams said June 2025 marked his 27th anniversary at Apple and his 40th year in the industry. His Apple career combined operations and product leadership:
- Supply chain: built and expanded a global network spanning major manufacturing and customer regions.
- Product programs: played key roles in iPod and iPhone development.
- Apple Watch: led the product effort and oversaw its development.
- Health: architected Apple’s health strategy.
- Design: led Apple’s design team in his later years.
Williams said he planned to spend more time with friends and family, including “five grandchildren and counting.” He also described working with Apple employees as a privilege of a lifetime.
What the transition means for Apple
The change separates Williams’s long-running product and design influence from day-to-day operations while placing the COO job with an established operations leader. Khan inherits responsibility for the systems that move Apple products from suppliers through manufacturing and logistics to customers, while Cook takes direct responsibility for design after Williams’s retirement.
In practical terms, the transition combines leadership renewal with continuity: Williams’s tenure ends after a planned overlap, and Khan moves up from the organization that already managed Apple’s global supply chain.
