For an Extended Power Range (EPR) design, choose the switch for the port’s power direction, operating voltage, current, reverse-current behavior, and fault requirements—not from a single maximum-voltage or wattage figure. AOS offers sink and source switches for different USB Type-C designs, but the capability of one switch is not the same as the maximum power allowed by USB Power Delivery.
What a USB-C protection switch does
A protection switch sits in the power path between a USB Type-C port and the system, or between the system and a port supplying power. It controls when that path conducts and may disconnect or limit it when a fault is detected. AOS lists functions across its ECPower portfolio that include overvoltage, overcurrent, overtemperature, reverse-current blocking, inrush control, and short-circuit protection. The feature set varies by part; the family name does not mean every device implements every protection.
These switches are board-level semiconductor components for circuit integration, not consumer plug-in adapters. The switch is one element in a complete design that also depends on the USB-C/PD controller, power source or load, layout, thermal path, and system-level protection strategy.
Sink and source switches handle opposite power directions
“Sink” and “source” describe the direction of power flow through the switch. In a sink path, power enters through the Type-C port and travels toward the internal system. In a source path, power travels from the system out to the Type-C port. A design that supports changing roles or multiple ports must account for its actual power-path topology rather than assume one switch type covers every direction.

AOS’s portfolio describes USB-C PD in a context reaching up to 20 V and 5 A. That is not the EPR maximum. USB-IF says USB PD Revision 3.1 extended power delivery to as much as 240 W, with fixed 28 V, 36 V, and 48 V levels associated with up to 140 W, 180 W, and 240 W, respectively. See the USB-IF USB Power Delivery overview for this standards context.
USB PD EPR power capability is not a switch rating
The 240 W figure describes the upper power capability of USB PD 3.1 under the specified system conditions; it does not mean any individual protection switch can carry 240 W. AOS announced the AOZ13937DI as a 28 V sink switch and the AOZ15333DI as a source switch for EPR designs up to 140 W. The announcement also stated that the pair withstands up to +39 V on VBUS. Those are AOS’s claims for that pair, not a statement that the USB-IF 240 W maximum applies to either switch. Consult the March 14, 2023 AOS announcement and current component documentation when evaluating them.

USB-IF’s document library search result listed Power Delivery Specification Revision 3.2 Version 1.2, dated September 14, 2026. The overview page is useful for orientation, but it is not a substitute for the applicable current normative specification. For a design or compliance decision, use the relevant revision-controlled specification together with the full, current datasheet for each component.
How to choose a switch for a USB-C PD design
Start from the negotiated power profiles and the circuit’s real worst-case conditions. Operating voltage, absolute maximum voltage, continuous current, peak current, and power delivered to the load are different constraints. A part’s absolute-maximum rating is not its normal operating range, and a peak-current figure is not a continuous-current rating.

- Map power direction. Identify whether the port is a sink, a source, or part of a topology that needs more than one path. Match the switch to that direction.
- Set the voltage envelope. Include the PD/EPR profiles the system must support and account for expected transients. Check the stated operating range separately from absolute maximum ratings.
- Check current and heat. Compare continuous and peak limits with the load profile, then assess on-resistance, dissipation, safe operating area, package, and PCB thermal path.
- Specify fault behavior. Confirm which protections are needed—such as OVP, UVLO, current limiting, short-circuit response, thermal shutdown, inrush control, or soft-start—and determine how the device responds, including whether it latches off or retries.
- Account for reverse current and role changes. Check whether the path needs true reverse-current blocking or an ideal-diode behavior, and whether Fast Role Swap (FRS) support is required.
- Verify implementation details. Review control pins, external components, footprint, availability and lifecycle, then validate the complete circuit against the current datasheet and applicable USB PD requirements.
In an AOS application paper, reverse-current protection is discussed as a way to protect a shared system rail from an improperly behaving adapter that applies a higher voltage. The paper also describes an FRS timing scenario for a dock and says the relevant sourcing response must occur within 150 μs, with controller response time using part of that budget. Treat those details as the paper’s explanation and confirm any compliance requirement against the current normative specification. Read AOS’s USB Type-C Power Delivery and Protection paper.

What to verify before adopting a specific part
- Confirm that the exact device’s operating limits support the intended negotiated voltage and load, rather than relying on its absolute-maximum rating or a family-level description.
- Read the current datasheet for protection thresholds, timing, response modes, pin behavior, package thermal limits, and the conditions behind typical values.
- Check whether the design needs FRS, reverse-current blocking, programmable current limit, or other features the selected part may not provide.
- Confirm current production status and availability with the manufacturer or distributor; the presence of a product page does not establish current stock.
- Validate the complete power path and compliance against the applicable current USB PD specification. The USB-IF document library provides access to specification documents.
AOS’s product pages and technical paper are manufacturer sources, and its performance descriptions should be read as vendor specifications or claims rather than independent comparative test results. No head-to-head efficiency or reliability conclusion follows from the listed figures alone. AOS’s ECPower Type C Protection Switch portfolio is a starting point for identifying parts, not a substitute for selecting and validating one against the circuit.
