Match the light to its job: compare beam shape and candela as well as lumens, then check sustained brightness, runtime, battery compatibility, controls, size, and the specific impact and water ratings. This guide explains how to choose without treating a peak lumen number as a complete measure of performance.
Start with the job the flashlight needs to do
Think about where the light will be used and how it will be carried. A light for close-up repairs or illuminating a room has different priorities from one meant to help spot objects farther away. REI’s selection guidance likewise emphasizes that there is no one-size-fits-all flashlight and recommends comparing output, beam distance, runtime, impact resistance, and water resistance (REI’s flashlight buying guide).
- Nearby work: Look for a broad, even beam that lights a useful area rather than a narrow, bright spot.
- Seeing farther: Compare peak intensity in candela and beam distance, as well as total lumens. A more concentrated beam can be more useful at distance.
- Everyday carry: Consider whether the light’s size, weight, switch, and controls make it practical to carry and operate.
- Emergency or outdoor use: Check runtime information, approved battery options, and the specific durability ratings against the conditions you expect.
These are trade-offs, not mutually exclusive categories: a flashlight can be compact yet powerful, for example, but its shape, beam, battery, and controls still need to fit your use.
Compare the specifications that affect real use

Understand lumens, candela, and beam distance
Lumens measure total output
Lumens describe the total light emitted by a flashlight. They are useful for comparing overall output, but they do not tell you whether the beam is broad or concentrated, or how much light reaches a particular spot.

Candela describes intensity in a direction
Candela indicates how intense the light is in a particular direction. A focused beam can have higher intensity and be more useful for seeing farther, while a broad beam can illuminate more of the nearby area. Compare both measures when a product publishes them; neither replaces the other.
Beam distance is not a promise of useful detail
Under ANSI/NEMA FL1, beam distance is the distance at which the beam reaches 0.25 lux, according to Peli’s explanation of FL1 flashlight standards. That threshold is a specification, not a guarantee that you will see bright, detailed objects at the advertised distance. Consider the beam pattern and your task alongside the number.

Read runtime figures carefully
Peli defines FL1 runtime as the time from the initial output measurement—taken 30 seconds after switch-on with fresh batteries—until output falls to 10% of that initial value (Peli’s FL1 definitions). A headline runtime therefore does not tell you how long a flashlight stays at a brightness you consider useful. If the manufacturer provides an output-over-time chart, use it to see how brightness changes during operation.
High-output operation can also trigger thermal step-down, in which a light reduces output after heating up. Aurora’s manufacturer buying guide notes this behavior and offers example output categories, but those categories are its guidance, not a universal standard for choosing a flashlight (Aurora’s flashlight buying guide). Look for model-specific runtime and output information rather than relying on peak lumens alone.

Choose batteries and charging with compatibility in mind
Rechargeable lights can make routine charging convenient; models with replaceable cells can offer flexibility for carrying spares. Check the flashlight maker’s instructions for the exact cell types and charging method. REI cautions against using lithium or lithium-ion cells unless the manufacturer recommends them (REI’s flashlight buying guide). Do not assume that a cell that fits physically is an approved substitute.
Treat durability ratings as specific test results
ANSI/NEMA FL1 is a voluntary labeling framework intended to help buyers compare stated flashlight performance using similar methods. REI notes that compliance is voluntary and manufacturers conduct their own testing (REI’s explanation of flashlight selection and FL1). FL1 labels cover measures including impact resistance and water resistance, but a rating should be read within its stated test conditions. Do not turn a water-resistance label into a blanket claim that a flashlight is waterproof for every use.

Check the controls and form factor before choosing
Specifications matter only if the light works for the way you will use it. Consider whether you can reach the switch easily, whether the available modes suit the task, and whether the body fits your pocket, bag, or intended mount. If accidental activation would be a problem, check whether the model has a lockout and how it works. These practical details can outweigh a higher peak output for a light you need to carry or operate regularly.

A current-market winner cannot be named reliably from specifications alone without a comprehensive, controlled comparison. A 2026 Amazon-oriented guide discusses the Fenix PD36 Tac, Nitecore TM20K, and Olight Javelot Mini, but that coverage is not enough to establish any of them as the best choice for every buyer. Confirm current product specifications and availability with the manufacturer and retailer before purchasing.

For a shortlist, first rule out models that do not fit your task, carry needs, battery preferences, or required durability. Then compare the remaining lights by beam shape, candela, output over time, runtime definition, controls, and approved charging options. This approach makes a “best” choice meaningful for your use rather than simply selecting the largest lumen figure.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many lumens do I actually need?
There is no universal lumen count that suits every flashlight task. For nearby area work, prioritize a broad beam; for distance, compare candela and beam distance as well as lumens. Check model-specific runtime information because peak output may not be sustained.
Why does my 1000-lumen flashlight seem dim after 5 minutes?
Peak output may not be sustained: a flashlight can reduce brightness as it heats up, and runtime figures may continue until output reaches 10% of its initial level. Look for an output-over-time chart and the manufacturer’s operating guidance.
What is the difference between tactical and EDC flashlights?
EDC means everyday carry and emphasizes a light’s practicality for regular carrying and use. “Tactical” is a product category label, not a guarantee of performance or defensive effectiveness. Compare the actual beam, controls, size, battery, and ratings for your intended task.
