Microsoft documented a specific reason Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) could fail to install: a volume-license product key known to be publicly available could block SP1 and later service packs. But an invalid-key error did not, by itself, prove that an XP copy was pirated. A legitimate key paired with the wrong installation media could trigger the same message.
Why a leaked XP key could block SP2
Microsoft’s technical guidance says that using a “leaked” key—a product key known to be publicly available—to deploy Windows XP across multiple computers under a volume-licensing installation could prevent SP1 and later service packs from installing. Microsoft gave “Product Key is invalid” as an example of the resulting error. The guidance also says such installations might be unable to obtain updates automatically from Windows Update.
This describes a volume-licensing key that Microsoft treated as leaked or invalid. It is not a blanket statement that every unauthorized, counterfeit, retail, or OEM copy of XP was detected by SP2. Microsoft’s guidance is available in its Windows XP service-pack and leaked-key support article.
Does the error prove the XP copy was pirated?
No. Microsoft also documented ordinary key-and-media mismatches. The Windows XP installation media must match the product key’s licensing channel, edition or SKU, and language. If those do not match, setup can report “Product Key is invalid” even when the key itself is legitimate. The error identifies a validation problem; it does not establish its cause on its own.

What SP2 and later Windows Genuine Advantage checks meant
Microsoft announced that XP SP2 was released to manufacturing on August 6, 2004. It described SP2 as a free service pack distributed through downloads, free CDs, and preloaded new PCs. Microsoft projected that Automatic Updates would deliver it to 100 million PCs over the following two months; that figure was an expectation at the time, not a confirmed final count. The announcement is in Microsoft’s SP2 release-to-manufacturing notice.
That service-pack behavior should not be confused with Microsoft’s later Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) validation policy. In 2005, Microsoft described WGA validation for access to Windows Update and the Download Center, while stating that security updates remained available through Automatic Updates and the Download Center. The company reported more than 40 million WGA pilot participants, attributing the figure to Will Poole, then senior vice president of the Windows Client Business. Those were statements about the later validation program, not the specific leaked-key rule for installing XP service packs. See Microsoft’s 2005 WGA announcement.

What Microsoft recommended for the volume-license case
For the documented volume-license problem, Microsoft’s stated remedy was to use a valid volume-license product key that matched the installed media, then install SP1a or a later XP service pack. Its support article describes procedures for changing a volume-license key. Do not treat generic repair utilities as a way to make an invalid key valid.
Microsoft’s 2005 announcement also described a genuine-copy offer for customers who unknowingly acquired counterfeit software. Eligibility required a piracy report, proof of purchase, and submission of the counterfeit CDs. Microsoft mentioned paid XP replacement kits at that time as well. These were historical program terms; the announcement does not establish that those offers are available today. Current XP-specific activation availability and marketplace license legitimacy are not established here, so seek authoritative support for the relevant XP edition and licensing channel rather than assuming a present-day replacement or activation route.
