How Google Maps saves your parking location on iPhone
Google Maps for iPhone and iPad can save a parking location automatically. With a car connection, pair your iPhone with the vehicle over Bluetooth and set the car’s audio source to Bluetooth, or connect the phone through CarPlay or USB. When the connection ends after you leave the car, Maps can use the phone’s location to save the spot. Google also documents an option that uses motion sensors instead of a Bluetooth connection.
Google’s support instructions describe the available setup, but do not guarantee that every vehicle or iOS configuration will trigger a save. Location permissions, the connection and the selected automatic-saving option all matter.
Set up automatic parking saves
Use Bluetooth, CarPlay, or USB

Pair your iPhone with your car over Bluetooth and set the car audio source to Bluetooth, or connect the iPhone to the car using CarPlay or USB.

In Google Maps, open Settings and make sure Automatically save parking is on.

After you park and leave the car, open Google Maps and look for the You parked here marker.
Use motion detection without Bluetooth

In Google Maps, go to Settings → Navigation.

Turn on Automatically save parking, then enable Let Maps use your motion to save your parking.

For background detection, Google recommends setting the app’s Location Services access to Always. Maps uses phone sensors to detect driving and parking.

Find your car and get directions back

Open Google Maps and tap the You parked here pin, or search for Saved parking.

Tap Directions to navigate back to the saved location.
You can move the parking marker if it is slightly off, remove it, share it, and switch parking notifications on or off from the saved-parking controls in Maps.
Save a parking location manually
If automatic saving does not appear, or you prefer to mark the spot yourself, tap the blue dot that shows your current location and select Saved parking. This creates a pin without relying on the automatic connection or motion trigger.

How long does Google Maps keep the pin?
Google says an iPhone or iPad parking location remains saved for 48 hours, unless you remove it or start driving. The pin is therefore useful for finding a car after a short stop, but it is not a permanent record of every place you have parked. Google Maps Help: Find & save parking locations.
What to check if the parking marker is missing

Confirm that Automatically save parking is enabled in Google Maps.

If using the connection-based setup, check that Bluetooth, CarPlay, or USB connected the phone to the car as expected.

If using motion detection, confirm that Let Maps use your motion to save your parking is enabled under Settings → Navigation.

Review Location Services access. Google recommends Always for background operation, including when the app is not open or the screen is off.

If the automatic marker still does not appear, save the spot manually by tapping the blue location dot and choosing Saved parking.
Google’s instructions do not provide a complete diagnosis for every vehicle and iOS setup, so an enabled setting cannot guarantee automatic detection in every case.

Apple Maps has its own parked-car marker. Apple says it can appear when an iPhone disconnects from CarPlay or Bluetooth and the driver exits. Apple’s troubleshooting guidance points to Location Services, Significant Locations, and Show Parked Location; Apple Maps does not mark familiar places such as home or work as parked-car locations.

Is this new to Google Maps?
Google described manual parking saves on Android and iOS in an announcement dated April 25, 2017. That announcement also said iOS could detect parking automatically when connected over USB audio or Bluetooth and disconnected after the driver exited. More recent coverage described a newer automatic parking tool rolling out to iPhones, but the feature is not wholly new. Does Google Maps work the same way on Android?
Do not assume the iPhone automatic workflow applies to Android. Google’s cited Android help page documents manual saving: tap the blue location dot and choose Save your parking. It says the location stays in Maps until removed. Google Maps Help for Android.
