What deepin 23 actually offers
deepin 23 was released on 15 August 2024. In its release note, Deepin Technology Community says the new repository upgraded more than 8,000 core packages. That is a project-reported release figure, not an independent benchmark of speed, stability or security.
The release focuses on the desktop experience rather than a claim to replace every Windows workload. Advertised changes include a redesigned taskbar and launcher, expanded personalization, Windows/deepin file and clipboard sharing, and atomic update rollback or version switching. These features may make Linux feel more approachable, but they do not by themselves establish superiority over Windows 11.
Linyaps and application isolation
Deepin describes Linyaps as a package format that isolates applications from the base system to reduce dependency conflicts. The project’s release note says: “By implementing isolation between applications and the system, it resolves conflicts between system and application dependencies, providing users with a more stable system environment.” That is Deepin’s description of its design, not independent evidence that every application is risk-free, conflict-free or secure.

Where the Windows-versus-deepin decision is really made
Choose according to the software and hardware you depend on, not the headline’s absolute wording. The official materials reviewed for this comparison do not provide controlled tests or evidence for a performance, privacy or security ranking.

What changed after the original release
Deepin’s 23.1 release notes describe subsequent kernel and driver updates and report more than 100 user-reported issue fixes. The project says regularly updated deepin 23 systems can upgrade to 23.1 through Control Center without reinstalling. Those notes document the project’s update work; they do not independently prove long-term reliability or promise a particular support lifetime.

The latest downloadable major version, a support end date and independently verified privacy or security results are not established by the sources cited here. Check the current official downloads and notes immediately before installation rather than assuming that an older 23.x image is still the right one.
Test deepin before you replace Windows
A staged trial limits the cost of discovering an application or driver problem. The official overview describes a custom dual-system installation with Windows. If you use that route, maintain a complete backup and understand which disk and partitions the installer will modify.

Pre-install checklist
- Back up personal files and confirm that you can restore them.
- Record Windows recovery keys, application license details and any device-specific settings.
- List the applications and peripherals you use every week, then test their Linux support.
- Prepare a system-installation USB drive. Deepin recommends Ventoy for creating installation media.
- Keep the computer connected to reliable power during partitioning and installation.
Deepin’s installation overview and fresh-installation guide are the authoritative references for the current installer screens. The guide instructs users to back up and transfer data on the USB before preparing it, so do not treat the flash drive as disposable storage until its contents are safe elsewhere.
Custom installation alongside Windows
- Start from the prepared installation USB and select the custom installation route in the installer.
- Identify the intended disk and existing Windows partitions by size and layout; do not select a recovery or data partition merely because its name looks unfamiliar.
- Reserve the required space for deepin. The guide states that custom installation requires at least 65 GB, while providing limited partitioning detail.
- Review the proposed changes, install deepin, and reboot into the boot menu when prompted.
- Boot both systems and test your essential applications, networking, graphics, sound and peripherals before changing your default workflow.
Partitioning mistakes can make Windows or personal data unavailable. If you are not comfortable identifying partitions and recovering a bootloader, obtain hands-on help or use a supported live/testing method if one is offered for your device. The cited documents do not establish a universal live mode or current compatibility for every computer.

Full-disk installation
Full-disk installation leaves only deepin and formats the whole disk when the computer has one hard drive. Select it only when you have a verified backup and genuinely intend to remove Windows from that drive. A mistaken selection can destroy the Windows installation and files that have not been backed up.
Who is likely to be happy with deepin 23?
Good fit
- You want a visually refined Linux desktop with extensive personalization.
- Your daily applications have tested Linux versions or acceptable replacements.
- Your computer’s graphics, wireless, audio and external devices work in a trial installation.
- You are willing to learn Linux-specific settings and keep a recovery plan.
- You prefer to start with dual boot rather than make an irreversible replacement.
Keep Windows available
- Your income or coursework depends on Windows-only software, plug-ins or corporate tools.
- You rely on specialist peripherals whose Linux drivers are uncertain.
- You need a predictable vendor support channel and cannot spend time troubleshooting.
- You are evaluating the switch mainly because of an assumed privacy, security or speed advantage; the cited evidence does not establish those advantages.
A practical decision path
- Inventory dependencies: write down every essential application, account, file format and peripheral.
- Verify support: check the software vendor and device manufacturer, then test the actual hardware rather than relying on a generic compatibility list.
- Install reversibly: use a USB-based trial or the documented dual-system/custom route when available, with a complete backup.
- Run a real workload: complete a normal workday, including meetings, printing, external displays, file exchange and sleep/wake cycles.
- Choose deliberately: keep dual boot, migrate only after successful testing, or return to Windows if a critical dependency fails.
Verdict: try deepin 23, but do not treat it as a proven Windows 11 replacement
deepin 23 may be the Linux distribution you really want if interface polish, customization and a willingness to adapt matter more than guaranteed Windows application compatibility. Its 23.1 update path and documented installer give you a basis for a controlled trial. They do not justify claiming that deepin wins on performance, privacy, security or overall value.

The safest recommendation is conditional: verify your applications and hardware, back up your data, install alongside Windows where practical, and use the computer in both systems before committing to a full-disk change.
