Windows 11 24H2 did not necessarily consume the gigabytes shown by Disk Cleanup. Microsoft says the unusually large Windows Update Cleanup figure is a display problem: “Please note this is a reporting error.” Disk Cleanup can remove files on its first run, yet show an inflated amount again during a later scan.
What the Windows Update Cleanup number actually means
The figure in Disk Cleanup is an estimate of cleanup candidates, not a direct measurement of storage currently occupied. In Microsoft’s 2024 release-health example, a first run could correctly clean about 15 GB and free that space. A later scan might then claim that 88 GB was available for cleanup even though the earlier files had already been removed.
That means a value such as 8.63 GB, often mentioned in Microsoft Q&A support discussions, should be treated as a reported symptom—not proof that 8.63 GB of data is still on your drive or that Windows 11 “ate” that capacity.
How to tell a reporting error from a genuinely full drive
Check the drive’s real free capacity in File Explorer > This PC. This value is the practical measure that determines whether you can save files or install an update.

Why the number can return after you clean it
In the affected 24H2 behavior, Disk Cleanup’s first Windows Update Cleanup pass can delete some or all of the files it identifies. The free space is released correctly, but the tool’s later calculation can still count an inflated amount as available. Running the same scan repeatedly therefore may not make the displayed figure converge on zero.
Microsoft has not published a percentage of PCs affected, so there is no reliable prevalence figure to apply to every Windows 11 installation.

Install the updates that improve the estimate
Microsoft Q&A records that updates released on October 24, 2024 (KB5044384) and later included improvements intended to address causes of incorrect estimates. Microsoft said accuracy should improve after those updates and that a future update would provide a more accurate calculation.
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates, install every available update, and restart when Windows requests it.
- Return to Windows Update and check again until no further updates are offered.
- Recheck actual capacity in File Explorer > This PC. For the latest status of this issue or a later fix, consult Microsoft’s Windows release-health notice for Windows 11, version 24H2.
Updating improves the estimate; it does not turn an inaccurate Disk Cleanup figure into a measurement of past disk use.

Safe ways to reclaim space
Use Storage Sense for routine maintenance
Open Settings > System > Storage and enable or run Storage Sense. It can target temporary files and other categories without relying on the suspect Windows Update Cleanup total.
Review Cleanup recommendations
In Settings > System > Storage > Cleanup recommendations, Windows groups items for review, including temporary files, large or unused files, cloud-synced files and unused apps. Check each category before deleting anything you may need.

Use Disk Cleanup, but read the result cautiously
Disk Cleanup remains suitable for ordinary temporary and system-file removal. The Windows Update Cleanup line is the exception on an affected, not-yet-fully-updated 24H2 system: treat a repeated large number as an estimate that may be stale or inflated.
What to do when an update really cannot install
If This PC confirms that the internal drive is genuinely short on space, first remove or move personal files and uninstall apps you no longer use. If that still leaves insufficient room, Microsoft says an external storage device can help complete the update. A portable external USB SSD is one practical choice for temporarily holding files or supplying additional capacity during installation.

External storage is an installation aid, not a repair for the Disk Cleanup calculation. It also does not increase the internal drive’s permanently available capacity unless you move data off that drive.

Bottom line for the 8 GB-or-more warning
An 8 GB, 8.63 GB or even much larger Windows Update Cleanup figure in Windows 11 24H2 is not, by itself, evidence that those gigabytes are currently missing. Verify capacity in This PC, bring Windows fully up to date—including updates after KB5044384—and use Storage Sense or Cleanup recommendations for normal maintenance. Escalate to an external drive only when the real free-space reading shows that an update genuinely needs more room.
