WhatsApp passkeys let you verify account access with your fingerprint, face authentication, or device screen-lock code instead of entering an SMS code in supported sign-in flows. Setup is in WhatsApp > Settings > Account > Passkeys. Passkeys are available on Android and iPhone; WhatsApp began its Android rollout in October 2023 and announced global iOS support on April 24, 2024.

What a WhatsApp passkey does

A passkey connects your WhatsApp account to your device’s security system. When you sign in through a supported flow, your device uses its existing unlock method—such as Face ID, Touch ID, a fingerprint, or a screen-lock code—to authorize access. The biometric or code unlocks a credential held by the device; WhatsApp does not receive your fingerprint or face data. WhatsApp’s Help Center describes passkeys as linked to device security.

WhatsApp announced global passkey support for iOS on April 24, 2024, after Android support began rolling out in October 2023. That makes the feature available across both platforms, though WhatsApp has not published a complete country-by-country availability list or a definitive minimum app version for every handset. Meta’s iOS announcement describes the launch.

How to set up a WhatsApp passkey

  1. Open WhatsApp and go to Settings > Account > Passkeys.
  2. Tap the option to create or add a passkey, then follow the on-screen prompts.
  3. Confirm with the device’s available security method, such as fingerprint or face authentication, or its screen-lock code.

The menu wording can vary slightly by app version. If Passkeys is not shown, update WhatsApp and check again. The phone also needs a configured screen lock or supported biometric unlock. WhatsApp’s current passkey instructions give the settings path and describe adding multiple passkeys for people using both Android and iOS devices. See WhatsApp’s passkey guidance.

Passkeys versus SMS verification

Factor WhatsApp passkey SMS code
Sign-in action Approve with the device’s existing unlock method. Receive a one-time code and enter it.
Phishing exposure Designed to resist credential theft by malicious websites and scam links. A code can be exposed through social engineering or attacks involving the phone number.
Device relationship Depends on the device’s security system and account recovery options. Depends on access to the phone number and delivery of the text.

Meta says passkeys are resistant to guessing and theft through malicious websites, addressing common phishing and password-spraying techniques. This improves protection against those attacks, but does not make an account invulnerable: protect the device and phone number, and follow WhatsApp’s account-recovery guidance if access is lost. Meta’s passkey explainer describes the security properties.

Do you need special hardware or a new phone?

No separate security key or password-manager subscription is required by WhatsApp’s setup instructions. Use a compatible device security method already available on your phone. WhatsApp does not specify a universal minimum handset model in the cited guidance, so check whether the Passkeys option appears after updating the app rather than assuming a particular phone is required.

Using passkeys on Android and iPhone

WhatsApp says you can add more than one passkey if you use both Android and iOS devices. This lets users set up access across devices rather than relying on a single phone’s credential. The available recovery route still depends on your device and account setup, so keep those recovery options accessible.

On August 25, 2026, WhatsApp said more than one billion people had set up a passkey. That is a company-reported adoption figure, not an independently audited market statistic. WhatsApp’s announcement also notes multiple-passkey support.
