A Gmail verification flaw reported in 2016 could let an attacker confirm ownership of another email address when Google’s verification message could not be delivered—or when the recipient had blocked the sender. The code appeared in a delivery-failure notification sent back to the attacker. BetaNews reported that Google had fixed the flaw before its November 5, 2016, story was published; the incident does not show that the same vulnerability is open today.

How the Gmail verification flaw worked

The issue involved Gmail’s account-linking and forwarding workflow. A user could link another email address to a primary Gmail account for forwarding, and Google used a verification message to confirm control of that address.

According to BetaNews’s November 5, 2016 report, the flaw arose when the verification message could not reach its intended recipient. The reported conditions included an offline recipient SMTP service, a deactivated or nonexistent address, or a recipient who had blocked the sender. In those cases, the message bounced back to the original sender with the verification code in the failure notification.

  1. An attacker initiated a Gmail verification request for an email address they wanted to claim.
  2. Google sent a verification message to that address.
  3. A delivery failure or block caused a notification containing the code to return to the attacker.
  4. The attacker used the returned code to confirm ownership of the address.

BetaNews reproduced HackRead writer Uzair Amir’s explanation of the sequence: “The attacker tries to verify the ownership status of an email address by emailing Google. Google sends an email to that address for verification. The email address cannot receive the email and hence, Google’s mail is sent back to the actual sender and this time it contains the verification code. This verification code will be used by the hacker and the ownership to that particular address will be confirmed.”

What an attacker could gain

The code leak could let an attacker confirm ownership of an address they did not control. That made the defect an account-takeover path: the security check intended to establish control over an address could instead disclose the proof needed to claim it. The report described the impact qualitatively and did not provide a victim count or prevalence estimate.

Who discovered it and when it was fixed

BetaNews credited Ahmed Mehtab, a student and security researcher from Pakistan, with discovering the flaw. The report said Google had fixed it before publication on November 5, 2016. It is therefore a historical vulnerability report, not evidence that Gmail accounts remain exposed to this specific issue today.
