Rhino Linux 2024.2 was a September 1, 2024 disk-image release that refreshed the Unicorn desktop theme, expanded Setup Wizard options, supplied different kernel builds for different hardware images, and consolidated documentation in a community wiki. Those changes explain the “horns in on Windows 11” headline; they do not constitute a benchmark, migration test, or proof that Rhino Linux is a generally superior Windows replacement.
What Rhino Linux 2024.2 included
The Rhino Linux Team’s announcement, published September 1, 2024, described 2024.2 as a disk-image release collecting changes made over the preceding months. It was a snapshot of the project at that date, not a claim about current package versions or support status.
A redesigned purple Unicorn desktop
Unicorn received a new GTK, XFWM4 and Kvantum theme that replaced Yaru-Purple. Rhino Linux said the appearance was extended through the installer, Rhino System application, Thunar and XFCE4-Terminal to create a more integrated purple interface. That is the project’s design description, not an independent usability assessment.
More choices in Setup Wizard
The wizard added optional selections for Nix, Docker, Podman, Flatseal, Distrobox, Apptainer, VirtualBox, QEMU and Redshift. Selecting an item did not mean every tool was installed by default or appropriate for every machine. The release specifically warned that rhino-pkg/rpk did not then support Nix.

A consolidated community wiki
Rhino Linux moved documentation to a Nextra-based community wiki, bringing earlier Rhino pages and Pacstall documentation together. A central wiki can make troubleshooting easier, but the announcement does not establish a support-duration guarantee or a particular documentation quality level.

Known issues at release
Two previously reported problems remained in 2024.2: an icon issue for desktop installations and an oversized Unicorn panel. The release post links to workarounds; anyone using that historical image should consult those instructions rather than assuming the issues are present or fixed in later snapshots.
How the release relates to Windows 11
Microsoft’s published Windows 11 baseline requires a compatible 1 GHz or faster processor with at least two cores, 4 GB of RAM, 64 GB of storage, UEFI with Secure Boot capability, TPM 2.0, DirectX 12 or later with WDDM 2.0, and a qualifying 720p display larger than 9 inches. Windows 11 Home and Pro for personal use also require internet access and a Microsoft account during initial setup. See Microsoft’s system-requirements page for the current wording.

Those requirements provide a Windows 11 eligibility baseline only. The supplied Rhino 2024.2 release information does not establish equivalent hardware requirements, application compatibility, peripheral support, security outcomes, performance, or migration success. A computer that qualifies for Windows 11 is not automatically confirmed to support every Rhino Linux image, and vice versa.
Which choice fits your situation?
| Decision point | Windows 11 | Rhino Linux 2024.2 |
|---|---|---|
| Hardware gate | Microsoft’s CPU, memory, storage, firmware, TPM, graphics and display requirements apply. | Not established by the 2024.2 announcement; select the image and verify hardware support in current documentation. |
| Apps and peripherals | Compatibility depends on Windows software and device vendors. | Not settled by this release announcement; check each required application, game, driver and peripheral separately. |
| Desktop workflow | Windows 11’s Microsoft desktop and account-led setup. | Unicorn with a redesigned purple theme and optional Linux tools. |
| Initial setup | Home and Pro personal-use setup requires internet and a Microsoft account. | Setup Wizard offers optional package and virtualization choices; the announcement does not define every installation prerequisite. |
| Maintenance model | Use Microsoft’s Windows update and support channels. | Expect to rely on Rhino’s rolling-distribution documentation and community wiki; current guidance may differ from 2024.2. |
If you are evaluating 2024.2 today
- Check the date of the image and documentation. The official blog now lists a later 2026.1 snapshot dated May 24, 2026, so do not treat 2024.2 instructions as current without checking the official blog and live project documentation.
- List non-negotiable software and devices. Confirm support for work applications, games, printers, scanners, VPNs, accessibility hardware and any specialized peripherals before replacing Windows.
- Test without destroying your existing system. Use a backup and, where appropriate, a virtual machine or separate test disk. A USB flash drive is a practical way to write Linux installation media, but the release does not prescribe a capacity, brand or model.
- Choose the matching image. Generic, Pine64 and Raspberry Pi images carried different 2024.2 kernels; downloading the wrong image can prevent a successful boot.
- Review the Setup Wizard deliberately. Add only the optional tools you need. In particular, do not assume Nix was supported by
rpkin the 2024.2 release. - Record a recovery path. Keep Windows installation or recovery media and a tested backup until your required workflow operates reliably.
What the historical upgrade command means
For users already on Rhino Linux at the time, the September 1 announcement said: rpk update -y. That was contemporaneous guidance for moving to 2024.2. Because later snapshots now exist, run commands from current Rhino documentation rather than applying this historical command blindly to a present-day installation.

Bottom line on the “horns in” claim
Rhino Linux 2024.2 made a focused release refresh: a unified purple Unicorn theme, a broader optional-tool wizard, image-specific kernels and a reorganized wiki. It is reasonable to investigate if you want a Linux desktop and are prepared to verify software and hardware compatibility. The evidence does not show a measured contest with Windows 11 or establish that Rhino Linux is the better choice for a particular user.
