DZone’s Essential F# is a compact, free PDF reference introducing the F# programming language—not a full-length book or a current installation guide. Refcard #081 is credited to W. Chance Coble and Ted Neward, and focuses on F# syntax, inferred types, expressions, and functional and object-oriented programming.
What does the DZone Essential F# refcard cover?
The refcard presents F# as a .NET language that supports both functional and object-oriented programming. Its listed topics include an introduction to F#, getting started, language syntax and type inference; the indexed PDF text also covers object-oriented programming in F#, expressions and practical tips.
Expressions, bindings and types
Examples emphasize composed expressions and let bindings. They also demonstrate type inference: the compiler can determine static types from expressions, so examples can often omit explicit type annotations.
Composition and data structures
The indexed text includes function composition and piping, along with tuples and records. These examples give readers a concise look at ways to combine operations and represent related values in F#.

Is Essential F# a book?
No. DZone identifies this item as Refcard #081 and describes it as a free PDF. It is a compact learning and reference resource rather than a full book. The DZone listing credits W. Chance Coble and Ted Neward as its authors: DZone’s Essential F# refcard page.
Should you use its setup examples today?
Use the document primarily as a language reference. Its examples include compiling a .fs file and working in an interactive session, but they use older terminology and tools such as fsc.exe and fsi.exe, as well as Visual Studio menu directions. The document also refers to #light as something to be removed in a future version. Those passages show what the refcard teaches; they do not establish that its setup instructions match current F# tooling.

Where can you learn more about F#?
For a longer learning resource, the F# Software Foundation separately lists Ian Russell’s Essential F# as a practical book for learning functional-first F#: F# Software Foundation’s F# Books page. It is a different resource from the DZone refcard, with a different author. The Foundation page establishes the listing and description, not current retail availability.
