Ubuntu 18.04 LTS “Bionic Beaver” Final Beta was announced on April 6, 2018. It offered prerelease images for Ubuntu Desktop, Server and Cloud, along with several official flavors. The announcement expected the finished release on April 26, 2018, but warned that fixes could still be made before then. This is a historical release, not the current Ubuntu 18.04 download recommendation.

What “Beta 2” meant

The Ubuntu Release Team called this milestone the “Final Beta,” rather than simply Beta 2. Announced on April 6, 2018, it was a recent snapshot of Ubuntu 18.04 intended to represent features planned for the final release. The team said the images were reasonably free of showstopper build or installer bugs, but that did not mean they were bug-free or suitable for production. Fixes could still be included before the expected April 26 release. Ubuntu Release Team announcement.

Which editions and flavors were included?

The announcement covered the main Ubuntu Desktop, Server and Cloud products, plus beta images for these official flavors:

  • Kubuntu
  • Lubuntu
  • Ubuntu Budgie
  • UbuntuKylin
  • Ubuntu MATE
  • Ubuntu Studio
  • Xubuntu

Availability referred to the beta images announced in 2018; it should not be read as a statement about present-day download availability. The release announcement and Ubuntu 18.04 release notes describe the images and formats.

What differed among the beta images?

The 2018 announcement pointed readers to different image types and architectures. For Server installations, it also distinguished between two installers:

Image or installer What the announcement said
x86 downloads Provided for Ubuntu and Ubuntu Server.
Non-x86 Server images Available as part of the beta image set.
Cloud images Daily cloud images were referenced.
Netboot images Referenced as another Server installation option.
Subiquity The next-generation Server installer; it did not support the same set of installation options as the previous installer.
debian-installer A separate Server image remained available in parallel for users needing the previous installer’s options.

The announcement identified a current 4.15 kernel in the beta’s updated core packages. These details describe that prerelease snapshot, not necessarily a later Ubuntu 18.04 installation image. Ubuntu Release Team announcement.

Was Ubuntu 18.04 still supported in 2026?

No longer under standard support. Canonical says Ubuntu 18.04 standard support ended May 31, 2023. Canonical’s lifecycle information lists Ubuntu Pro expanded security maintenance through May 2028, and a legacy add-on period through May 2033. Coverage and terms depend on Canonical’s current offerings, so check its lifecycle pages before deciding what to do with an existing system: Ubuntu 18.04 and Ubuntu release cycle.

What should an existing 18.04 user consider?

Canonical’s lifecycle table lists Ubuntu 20.04 LTS as the upgrade path from 18.04. That is current lifecycle guidance, separate from the 2018 beta announcement. Check Canonical’s release-cycle information for the supported path and deployment-specific guidance before planning an upgrade. If retaining 18.04, consult Canonical about Ubuntu Pro coverage rather than assuming the former standard-support schedule still applies. Canonical release-cycle table.
