Instagram Trial Reels let creators show a Reel to non-followers first, review its early performance, and then decide whether to share it with followers. Meta said in June 2025 that it had made the feature available to everyone, though availability and app behavior can still vary by account.
What is a Trial Reel?
A Trial Reel is a way to test a video with people who do not follow you before sharing it with your followers. Instagram introduced the feature on December 10, 2024, for creators experimenting with a new topic, genre, or storytelling format. Meta describes Trial Reels as a way to “try out content and see what performs best” with non-followers (Instagram, December 10, 2024; updated June 26, 2025).
How to post a Trial Reel

Create a Reel using Instagram’s usual Reel creation flow.

Before sharing, turn on the Trial toggle.

Share the Reel. Instagram places it with your drafts on your profile; it does not ordinarily appear on your main profile grid or Reels tab while it remains a trial.

Meta said in June 2025 that Trial Reels had been made available to everyone. The original December 2024 launch was a rollout to eligible creators, so if you do not see the Trial toggle, check your current Instagram app and account rather than assuming the feature is unavailable to all creators (Instagram, updated June 26, 2025; Meta, June 2025).
Can followers see a Trial Reel?
Followers ordinarily will not see a Trial Reel in their feed or Reels tab, and the Reel stays off your main profile surfaces unless you later share it with everyone. That is not a guarantee of invisibility: Meta says a follower could still encounter it if someone sends it in a direct message or through a page associated with its audio, location, or filter (Instagram, updated June 26, 2025).

When do Trial Reel insights appear?
Instagram says key metrics—views, likes, comments, and shares—typically become available about 24 hours after you publish the trial. You can also see insights comparing its performance with your previous trials. These figures can help you assess how the test is doing, but the announcement does not provide a universal public benchmark for success.
How to share a Trial Reel with followers
Share it yourself after reviewing
After checking the results, choose Share with everyone if you want to make the Reel available to your followers. Meta says a Reel shared this way appears on your profile grid and becomes eligible for distribution to followers on Instagram surfaces.

Optionally enable automatic sharing
While setting up a trial, you can opt into automatic sharing. If Instagram determines the Reel is performing well based on views during its first 72 hours, it may share it with followers. Meta has not published a universal numeric threshold for that decision. You can change the automatic-sharing setting.

Meta analyzed more than 400,000 creators who were actively producing Reels before and after trying Trial Reels. It compared the percentage who increased Reel production and non-follower reach in the month after first use with the month before adoption, and says it controlled for confounding factors. In that analysis, 40% of creators began posting Reels more often after trying the feature. Among that subset—not all creators in the analysis—80% saw an increase in reach from non-followers (Meta, June 2025).

These are Meta-reported observational results, not independent proof that Trial Reels caused the changes or a promise of better results for an individual account. Meta explicitly says performance is not guaranteed. A trial is best treated as a testing option, not a predictable way to increase reach or posting frequency.
