The Linux Foundation launched Supporters of Chromium-Based Browsers (SOCBB) on January 9, 2025, as an initiative intended to fund open development and support projects across the Chromium ecosystem. Google, Meta, Microsoft and Opera were named as founding supporters; all four are also listed on SOCBB’s website.
What is the Supporters of Chromium-Based Browsers initiative?
SOCBB is a Linux Foundation initiative intended to provide a neutral space for industry, academia, developers and the open-source community to support work across the Chromium ecosystem. Linux Foundation executive director Jim Zemlin described its purpose as providing “much-needed funding and development support for open development of projects within the Chromium ecosystem.”
The initiative’s launch announcement was dated January 9, 2025. The Linux Foundation’s announcement page is dated January 22, 2025, a difference between the page date and the launch date given in the release and company announcements.
Who is backing the Linux Foundation’s Chromium initiative?
The four founding supporters named in the launch announcement were Google, Meta, Microsoft and Opera. The SOCBB website currently lists the same four organizations as supporters.

The companies framed their participation as support for a more sustainable and collaborative development environment. Google said the initiative could financially support developers working on Chromium and its embedders. Microsoft said it could diversify contributions by providing a neutral channel for third-party organizations and help direct funds toward community-driven needs. Those are the companies’ stated rationales, not evidence that the initiative has already produced those outcomes.
Why was SOCBB announced?
Google said Chromium received more than 100,000 commits in 2024, representing approximately 94 percent of its contributions, and described annual maintenance costs as hundreds of millions of US dollars before new features or other business priorities. These are figures and characterizations published by Google in January 2025, not independent estimates established here.

Google’s VP of Chrome, Parisa Tabriz, called SOCBB an opportunity to create a sustainable platform for industry leaders, academia, developers and the broader open-source community. Microsoft’s VP of Edge, Meghan Perez, said the initiative would help drive collaboration within the Chromium ecosystem. Opera’s EVP of Browsers, Krystian Kolondra, said the company was joining to contribute to development of the open-source ecosystem.
Does the Linux Foundation control Chromium now?
No. SOCBB is housed at the Linux Foundation, but Chromium projects remain under their existing governance structures. The initiative’s open governance model and its own membership arrangements do not transfer control of Chromium to the Linux Foundation or its supporters.

The launch announcement said a technical advisory committee would be formed. The available announcements and project materials do not establish the committee’s present membership or operating status. Separately, SOCBB’s repository describes Premier and General member participation. It says members must be current corporate members of the Linux Foundation and outlines board representation and access to steering committees and working groups. Those internal arrangements concern SOCBB, not Chromium’s governance.
