Microsoft’s documentation confirms that rename, but the available authoritative material does not establish a complete Passport-to-Windows Live ID chronology. If you used an old Windows Live ID, use the same identity as a Microsoft account when signing in to current Microsoft services.
What happened to Windows Live ID?
Microsoft Learn states plainly: “A Microsoft account previously was called a Windows Live ID.” The archived Microsoft guidance likewise describes Microsoft account as the new name for Windows Live ID (current Microsoft Learn explanation; archived guidance).

That means an old Windows Live ID is not a separate account type that must be replaced manually. The current name is Microsoft account, and the account can still use an address from another email provider.
Was Windows Live ID the replacement for Microsoft Passport?
The title reflects a common historical question, but a precise Passport-to-Windows Live ID transition cannot be confirmed from the authoritative sources available here. A Microsoft Q&A discussion mentions an old Passport.net interface, yet it is a user-generated conversation rather than an official chronology or dated product-history record (Microsoft Q&A discussion).

The supportable sequence is therefore:
- Earlier Microsoft identity products included Passport terminology.
- Microsoft documented the later identity name as Windows Live ID.
- Microsoft subsequently documented Windows Live ID as the previous name for Microsoft account.
Do not infer a specific rename year or claim that Windows Live ID formally replaced Passport without a primary Microsoft history source that states those details.
What a Microsoft account actually is
A Microsoft account is an online identity consisting of an email address and password. It does not have to be an Outlook.com or Hotmail mailbox: an existing address managed by Gmail, an internet provider, or another service can be used as the account ID (Microsoft account definition; archived account guidance).

- Windows 11's new user experience, from reworked Start menu and Settings app to voice input
- The brand-new Windows 365 option for running Windows 11 as a Cloud PC, accessible from anywhere
- Major security and privacy enhancements that leverage the latest PC hardware
- Expert insight and options for installation, configuration, deployment, and management – from the individual to the enterprise
- Getting more productivity out of Windows 11's built-in apps and advanced Microsoft Edge browser
Microsoft currently uses this identity for Windows, Xbox, Outlook.com, OneDrive, Microsoft 365, Microsoft Store, MSN and other services. Account information and security controls are managed through Microsoft’s account dashboard (Microsoft account overview).
Microsoft account versus a local Windows account
On a Windows PC, the account-name change is separate from the choice between an online Microsoft account and a local account.
Rank #3
| Aspect | Microsoft account | Local account |
|---|---|---|
| Scope | Can connect Windows with Microsoft services and be used across devices. | Applies to the individual device. |
| Internet requirement | Connected to Microsoft’s online services; some account features require connectivity. | Windows can sign in without internet access. |
| Settings and services | Can sync settings and provide access to services such as OneDrive and Microsoft Store. | Settings, files and apps remain device-specific. |
| Switching choice | Windows provides a path to switch to a local account. | Windows provides a path to switch to a Microsoft account. |
These distinctions and the switching options are documented by Microsoft Support (Windows account-switching instructions).
How to switch account types in Windows 10 or Windows 11
Menu labels can change in later Windows builds, but Microsoft’s current path is:
Rank #4
- Open Settings.
- Select Accounts, then Your info.
- To move from a local account, choose Sign in with a Microsoft account instead.
- To move from a Microsoft account, choose Sign in with a local account instead.
- Follow the verification and password prompts, then sign out or restart when Windows requests it.
Switching the Windows sign-in method does not turn an email mailbox into a different provider. It changes how that Windows profile connects to Microsoft services; files and installed applications on the device remain part of the profile unless you separately move or remove them.

That phrase can mean several different actions:
- Use the old identity under its current name: sign in with the same address and password as a Microsoft account.
- Change the sign-in address: manage aliases or account details from the Microsoft account dashboard; this is different from changing a Windows local-account type.
- Change the Windows profile type: use Settings > Accounts > Your info and select the appropriate “Sign in with…” option.
- Recover access: use Microsoft’s account-recovery and security controls rather than creating a second account, unless you intentionally need a separate identity.
A historical Microsoft Q&A page uses the exact wording “How do I change my Windows Live ID?”, which explains why older help searches may use terminology that no longer appears in Windows (Q&A example).

Bottom line on the name change
For practical purposes, translate Windows Live ID to Microsoft account. That is the documented, current relationship. Treat any more detailed claim about exactly when or how Passport became Windows Live ID as unverified unless it is backed by a dated primary Microsoft history source.
