OWC’s Thunderbolt 5 expansion adds two different upgrades for compact Macs and PCs: StudioStack, a stackable hybrid storage and connectivity enclosure, and Mercury Helios 5S, an external chassis for one PCIe card. StudioStack is primarily a high-capacity NVMe/HDD system for Mac Studio and compatible Mac mini models; Helios 5S is primarily a way to use workstation-class PCIe hardware through a single Thunderbolt connection.

What OWC announced

OWC announced the two products on November 12, 2025, as additions to its Thunderbolt 5 range. They target different bottlenecks: StudioStack adds local storage and ports, while Mercury Helios 5S adds an external PCIe slot.

OWC StudioStack: storage expansion that also adds ports

What it is

StudioStack is a stackable hybrid storage enclosure designed to sit with Mac Studio and 2018–2023 Mac mini systems. It is not merely a passive stand or a conventional dock: its published configuration combines NVMe solid-state storage, hard-drive capacity and six combined Thunderbolt/USB-A ports.

Capacity and speed

  • Up to 8TB of NVMe SSD storage
  • Up to 24TB of HDD storage
  • OWC claims transfer speeds of up to 6,302MB/s

The 6,302MB/s figure is a manufacturer claim; achieved performance depends on the installed drives, workload, host computer and connection. OWC positions StudioStack for photo, video, CGI and audio production, and also for AI engineers and data scientists who need local model storage.

OWC Mercury Helios 5S Thunderbolt 5 80Gb/s PCIe and Connectivity Expansion
  • Expands Small Machines: Use video capture, high-speed fiber/Ethernet, NVMe RAID, audio I/O, and other cards to unlock the potential of MacBooks, Mac Studio, Mac mini, and other space-constrained computers lacking a PCIe slot
  • Internal Class Speed: Over 6000MB/s bandwidth available for simultaneous read/write
  • Pro Level Card Ready: (1) PCIe 4.0 x4 (x16 mechanical slot) for half-length, full-height, single or double-width cards
  • Expanded Connectivity: Three Thunderbolt 5 (USB-C) 80Gb/s ports each with 15W power delivery for more device, display, and drive possibilities
  • 3 Year OWC Limited Warranty

Price and availability

OWC’s regional launch material lists a starting price of $329.99. That is a starting price for the enclosure/configuration specified by OWC, not a universal price for every capacity. The same material planned a December 2025 launch in Japan. Prices and availability vary by region and should be checked with OWC or an authorized retailer before purchase.

OWC Mercury Helios 5S: external PCIe for compact computers

What it adds

Mercury Helios 5S provides one PCIe 4.0 x4 electrical slot in an x16 mechanical slot. It accepts half-length, full-height cards that are either single-width or double-width, allowing a compact Mac or PC to use supported capture, networking, storage, audio and other PCIe hardware externally.

Bandwidth and ports

OWC specifies up to 6,000MB/s of simultaneous read/write bandwidth. OWC’s Mercury Helios 5S product page says: “The Mercury Helios 5S delivers up to 6000MB/s of bandwidth so you can run modern PCIe 4.0 cards at full speed while still accommodating data-hungry external Thunderbolt drives.” This is a manufacturer specification rather than a guarantee that every card or workload will sustain that rate.

The chassis includes three downstream Thunderbolt 5 USB-C ports. Each is rated for up to 80Gb/s and provides up to 15W of power delivery, so those ports can connect additional Thunderbolt devices while the installed PCIe card uses the expansion slot.

Installation and included items

Card installation is tool-free through captive thumb screws. OWC includes a certified 0.7m Thunderbolt 5 cable, and the product carries a three-year OWC limited warranty. The PCIe card itself is not included, so its price, power needs, drivers and physical dimensions must be added to the system budget.

Do they work with Thunderbolt 4, USB4 and Thunderbolt 3?

OWC lists Helios 5S compatibility with Thunderbolt 5 and Thunderbolt 4 computers, USB4 Macs and PCs, and Thunderbolt 3 Macs. A compatible host does not automatically make every PCIe card work: the operating system must support the card, and the card may require vendor drivers, firmware or a specific operating-system version. Host implementation can also affect available bandwidth and power.

Which product fits which upgrade?

Choose StudioStack when storage is the constraint

  • You need a large local working set for media, project files or models.
  • You want both fast NVMe workspace storage and higher-capacity HDD storage in a stackable form.
  • You also need additional Thunderbolt and USB-A connections around a Mac Studio or supported Mac mini.

Choose Helios 5S when a PCIe card is the constraint

  • You need 8K video capture, high-speed fiber or Ethernet networking, NVMe RAID, audio I/O or another compatible PCIe function.
  • Your compact computer lacks an internal slot but supports the required Thunderbolt or USB4 connection.
  • You want three additional Thunderbolt 5 ports alongside the installed card.

Consider both for separate bottlenecks

StudioStack and Helios 5S are complementary rather than interchangeable. A production system could use StudioStack for local storage and Helios 5S for capture, networking, RAID or audio hardware, provided the host has the required ports, bandwidth and driver support. Budget for the drives and PCIe card; neither product’s headline capacity or expansion capability means those components are automatically included.
