Firefox 156.0 is the current stable release, first offered on September 15, 2026. It adds automatic startup on macOS, expands localized Wikipedia and sponsored address-bar suggestions to three European countries, and claims up to 45% faster PDF-viewer startup. Other recently shipped work includes tracker counts, improved Containers management, new translation languages and Windows controller mapping. Separately, Mozilla’s roadmap describes features in development—including mobile tab groups, PDF editing, AI tools, privacy controls and new web-platform support—so a roadmap item should not be treated as a released feature.

What Firefox 156.0 adds now

Mozilla’s September 15, 2026 release notes identify Firefox 156.0 as the latest reviewed Release-channel version. Availability can still vary by operating system, account, country and staged rollout.

Automatic startup on macOS

On macOS, Firefox 156 adds an option to launch the browser automatically when the computer starts. It is an opt-in startup setting rather than a claim that Firefox now launches by default for every Mac user.

Localized Wikipedia and sponsored address-bar suggestions

Firefox Suggest can show localized Wikipedia suggestions and occasional sponsored suggestions in France, Germany and Italy. Mozilla says users can turn these suggestions off in Firefox Suggest settings. The country limitation matters: this release note does not establish the same availability elsewhere.

PDF viewer startup

Mozilla reports that the built-in PDF viewer starts up to 45% faster — Mozilla/Firefox, 2026. That is a release-note result for PDF-viewer startup, not a 45% improvement to Firefox’s overall speed.

Fixes and security maintenance

Firefox 156 includes fixes for several issues, including a network-connectivity problem affecting some users with the built-in VPN enabled, along with multiple security fixes. The release notes do not establish that every VPN user experienced the problem.

Features that arrived in the two releases before 156

Firefox 155: Smart Window and more

Firefox 155.0 was first offered on September 1, 2026. It began a progressive rollout of the optional Smart Window experiment for users in the United States, Canada and France. Eligible users may see it at different times because Mozilla stages releases to collect early feedback and catch bugs.

  • Personalized conversation starters.
  • Faster assistant responses with Exa web-search source citations.
  • Improved suggested tab groups.
  • Tracker counts displayed in the address bar.
  • Reordering of Containers in Settings.
  • Marathi and Urdu added to Translations.
  • Windows support for mapping game controllers.

Smart Window’s country list and gradual delivery describe who can try it; they do not mean the assistant is enabled for every Firefox installation.

Firefox 152: settings, privacy and mobile groundwork

Firefox 152.0, released June 16, 2026, redesigned Settings and added a per-tab control in Private Browsing to temporarily disable tracker blocking when a site breaks. An address-bar quick action can mute browser audio. Mozilla’s June roadmap announcement also said tab groups were beginning to roll out on Android, with iOS support planned later in the year; that announcement was a preview, not proof of an iOS launch.

Mozilla’s roadmap: planned work, not a release calendar

Mozilla introduced its public Firefox roadmap on June 16, 2026; the roadmap page was last updated July 10, 2026. Its entries describe plans or active work and do not guarantee a delivery date. Ajit Varma, Mozilla’s head of Firefox, said: “The roadmap gives our community a new way to see what’s taking shape, share feedback earlier and help guide where we’re heading next.”

Productivity and documents

Roadmap item Intended platform or scope Status and reader implication
Mobile tab groups Android and iOS Roadmap work; the June announcement said Android rollout was beginning and iOS would follow later in 2026.
PDF splitting, merging and reordering Desktop browser PDF tools Planned document editing; not established as shipped in Firefox 156.
Customizable hotkeys Firefox Planned control for keyboard shortcuts.
Curated sharing of bookmarks and tab groups Firefox sharing workflows Planned; no release date stated.
More translation languages Firefox Translations Planned expansion beyond the languages already delivered, including Marathi and Urdu in Firefox 155.
Extensible search/address bar Desktop and mobile address-bar experience Roadmap concept; it is not the same as the current Firefox Suggest controls.
Autofill improvements Firefox forms and saved information Planned usability work.
Document picture-in-picture Document viewing Planned multitasking feature.

Privacy and user control

Roadmap item Platform named by Mozilla What is established
Mobile VPN Mobile Previewed as forthcoming; current limits and availability should be checked in the relevant release notes rather than inferred from older announcements.
Redesigned private window with one-click cookie clearing Firefox Planned privacy workflow.
Native Containers Firefox Mozilla says Containers are being brought into Firefox; roadmap status does not establish a shipping version.
iOS ad blocking iOS Roadmap entry; not evidence that the feature is already enabled on all iPhones and iPads.
Settings redesign Firefox Settings redesign has already appeared in Firefox 152; the roadmap can represent continuing work rather than a separate completed release.
Passkey support for Firefox Sync Firefox Sync Planned authentication capability.
Blocked-tracker widget Firefox Planned visibility into blocked trackers.

AI, performance and mobile

  • Smart Window: continuing work on the optional assistant experience previewed in Firefox 155.
  • Voice-based Quick Answers: a planned voice interaction, not a confirmed Firefox 156 feature.
  • Resource monitoring: planned insight into browser resource use.
  • Phone Power Saving Mode: planned mobile battery-saving behavior, previewed in Mozilla’s June article.
  • Speed improvements: a broad roadmap goal; it should not be confused with the narrowly measured PDF startup claim in Firefox 156.

Mozilla’s March 2026 discussion of AI controls described the ability to turn generative-AI features off, on or customize them feature by feature. It did not establish that every AI capability is enabled by default.

Web technologies and media

  • New web APIs.
  • HDR video support on Windows and Linux.
  • JPEG XL support.
  • New CSS capabilities.

These entries concern platform compatibility and standards support. A roadmap listing is not a browser-compatibility guarantee until a release note documents the implementation.

Why some Firefox users see changes before others

Mozilla Support says Firefox moved from a four-week release rhythm to a two-week cycle, beginning with Firefox 155 on September 1, 2026. The goal is to deliver completed features and fixes sooner and make timing more predictable. Mozilla explicitly says this does not mean Firefox will ship twice as many features; dot releases can still appear when needed.

Staged delivery also explains “Where did this go?” moments. A feature can be present in release notes but arrive progressively, be limited to a country or platform, or require an experiment opt-in. Mozilla Support reports a 30% average increase in incoming support questions during the first 10 days of a typical Firefox release — Mozilla Support, 2026. That figure measures support questions, not adoption, user numbers or bug counts.

How to tell whether a feature is available to you

  1. Open Firefox’s About page and confirm the installed version. For the current baseline, look for Firefox 156.0.
  2. Check the release notes for that version rather than relying on a roadmap entry.
  3. Confirm platform and country limits. Smart Window’s Firefox 155 preview, for example, was for the United States, Canada and France and rolled out progressively.
  4. Look in the relevant Settings area for an opt-in control. Firefox Suggest options govern localized Wikipedia and sponsored suggestions.
  5. If a feature is missing, allow for staged rollout, update timing or an experiment that has not reached your installation.

What this means for Firefox users

The practical change is a faster-moving, more visibly planned Firefox: useful updates are arriving in smaller intervals, while Mozilla is publishing a clearer view of longer-term work. Firefox 156’s concrete gains are macOS startup control, limited-country address-bar suggestions, maintenance fixes and faster PDF-viewer startup. Smart Window and the many productivity, privacy, mobile and web-platform items remain dependent on rollout and future releases.
