OpenAI Codex is ChatGPT’s repository-aware coding agent. Rather than only suggesting snippets, it can work in an isolated copy of a project, investigate bugs, answer questions about the codebase, implement features, run checks, and return a commit with an activity log. The original May 2025 launch covered Pro, Team, and Enterprise work accounts; OpenAI subsequently added a desktop app for managing longer-running, multi-agent work and a mobile monitoring and approval experience. These capabilities make Codex useful as an AI teammate, not a replacement for a developer or code review.
What is OpenAI Codex in ChatGPT?
Codex is an agent that performs coding tasks against a repository. You give it a goal, and it can inspect the project, create an isolated workspace, make changes, and report what it did. That is materially different from a chat response containing a code sample: the agent operates on project files and produces a reviewable result.
Tasks Codex can handle
- Fixing a reported bug
- Answering questions that require tracing a repository
- Building a requested feature
- Running project checks and presenting their results
- Returning a real code commit and a detailed activity log
The isolated workspace is important. It gives the agent room to experiment without immediately changing the working branch you or your team rely on. You can inspect the resulting diff and decide what to merge.
Can Codex fix bugs and commit code?
Yes. The launch description specifically covered bug fixes and commits. A typical job is: provide a repository and a precise issue, let Codex investigate and edit an isolated workspace, then review the diff, tests, and action log before accepting the commit.

What the commit does—and does not—mean
A commit records the agent’s proposed changes; it is not proof that the change is correct, secure, complete, or suitable for production. Review the code, dependencies, migrations, error handling, and test coverage just as you would for a contribution from another engineer.
What does AGENTS.md do for Codex?
An AGENTS.md file acts as a repository-specific cheat sheet. It can explain how the project is organized, which commands to run, coding conventions, required checks, constraints, and other instructions the agent should follow.

Useful contents
- Build, test, lint, and formatting commands
- Directory ownership and architecture notes
- Framework or language conventions
- Rules about generated files, migrations, and APIs
- Security, privacy, and data-handling restrictions
- Definition-of-done checks for common tasks
Keep instructions explicit and version-controlled. An inaccurate file can steer every future task in the wrong direction, so update it when the project workflow changes.
Who could use Codex at launch?
BetaNews reported Codex availability in May 2025 for ChatGPT Pro, Team, and Enterprise accounts, with broader access promised later. Availability, limits, and included models can change by plan and region, so check the current ChatGPT account interface before assuming a particular entitlement.

How Codex expanded after the web launch
Desktop multi-agent work
Reuters reported on February 2, 2026 that OpenAI launched a Codex desktop app. Its focus was managing multiple AI agents over longer periods, making it better suited to parallel tasks than a single short chat session. Reuters also described a crowded coding-agent market and reported that Anthropic’s Claude Code had a lead; that is competitive context, not a controlled performance comparison.
Phone-based monitoring and approvals
In a May 2026 preview, eWeek described Codex inside the ChatGPT mobile app as a companion surface. While execution continues on another machine, the phone can show progress, screenshots, terminal output, diffs, test results, and approval requests. You can approve commands, redirect the work, choose between approaches, or switch models when the workflow offers that control.
Rank #4
The phone is not the execution computer. Files, credentials, permissions, and local tools remain on the machine doing the work. eWeek also reported generally available remote SSH for managed environments. The mobile preview covered iOS and Android on Free and Go as well as paid plans, subject to app updates and connection requirements.
How to use Codex safely in a repository
- Prepare the project. Confirm the repository builds, tests, and has a clean starting state. Add or update
AGENTS.mdwith commands and constraints. - Describe one outcome. Include the bug or feature, relevant paths, acceptance criteria, and tests that must pass.
- Let Codex investigate first. Ask for a diagnosis or plan when the change is ambiguous instead of authorizing a broad rewrite.
- Review the isolated result. Inspect the diff, activity log, test output, dependency changes, and any generated files.
- Run independent checks. Repeat important tests and security checks in your normal CI or development environment.
- Merge deliberately. Commit or merge only after a human confirms the behavior and the change fits the project’s design.
Is Codex better than Grok for coding?
The headline’s “Grok flounders” wording is editorial framing, not the result of a published Codex-versus-Grok benchmark. The available reporting does not establish a universal winner. A useful comparison depends on the workflow you care about:

| Capability | What is established about Codex | What a fair comparison should ask |
|---|---|---|
| Repository access | Works in an isolated repository workspace. | Can the alternative safely access the same code and isolate changes? |
| Code changes | Can implement fixes or features and return a commit. | Does it produce reviewable commits or only suggested snippets? |
| Transparency | Provides an activity log, diffs, and, in the mobile preview, terminal and test output. | Can you see exactly what ran and changed? |
| Controls | Supports approval requests; mobile users can approve commands or redirect work. | Can you pause, authorize, or revise actions before they execute? |
| Model and access surfaces | Expanded from ChatGPT web access to desktop multi-agent management and mobile monitoring. | Which models, plans, operating systems, and remote environments are supported? |
| Human oversight | Designed for review rather than unattended acceptance. | Does the workflow preserve meaningful developer review? |
Choose based on repository integration, isolation, logs, approval controls, model choice, and the environments your team already uses—not on the launch headline alone.

eWeek reported that OpenAI said Codex had more than 4 million weekly users in May 2026. That is an OpenAI-attributed adoption figure, not a measure of coding accuracy, productivity, or superiority over Grok.
Does Codex replace a developer or human code review?
No. BetaNews explicitly cautioned that Codex would not replace human review, and eWeek described users making decisions when an agent paused for permission or offered multiple approaches. Humans still define the requirement, judge architectural trade-offs, validate security and data handling, and accept or reject the change.
Where human judgment is indispensable
- Authentication, authorization, payments, and other high-impact paths
- Database migrations and irreversible data changes
- Privacy, licensing, and regulatory decisions
- Performance claims and capacity planning
- Whether a test actually represents the user requirement
Codex can reduce mechanical work and shorten the path from issue to proposed commit. The safest interpretation is “AI teammate with tools and accountability,” not “autonomous software engineer.”
