Microsoft’s Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 27938, announced for the Canary Channel on September 8, 2025, introduced two notable changes: AI actions in File Explorer and an optional larger Notification Center clock that can show seconds. Build 27938 was a preview milestone, not the latest Windows 11 build in 2026, and Canary features can change or disappear before a general release.
What Build 27938 changed
The update combined an image-focused AI menu in File Explorer with a restored clock preference. Both features were delivered through Windows 11’s normal interface, but availability depended on Insider channel, rollout phase, Windows version, device and region.
How AI actions work in File Explorer
For supported image files, right-click the file in File Explorer and choose AI actions. You can also select the file and press Shift + F10 to open its context menu. The initial announcement listed support for .jpg, .jpeg and .png files.
Bing Visual Search
This option sends the image to Bing Visual Search to find visually similar results and related information on the web. It is a web-search workflow rather than an operation performed entirely inside File Explorer.

Blur Background
Blur Background opens the image in Microsoft Photos, isolates the main subject and applies a blurred background effect.
Erase Objects
Erase Objects opens Photos’ Generative Erase feature so you can remove selected items from the picture.
Remove Background
Remove Background opens Microsoft Paint and creates a cutout by removing the image background.
These commands launch Photos, Paint or a Microsoft web service. File Explorer supplies the entry point; it does not perform every edit inside its own window.

Microsoft later described a File Explorer Summarize action for files stored in OneDrive and SharePoint. It is intended to summarize a document without requiring you to open each file, but Microsoft said the capability requires an active Microsoft 365 subscription and a Copilot license.

That licensing statement and the feature’s rollout status were specific to Microsoft’s 2025 documentation. They should not be treated as proof that every Windows 11 installation has the action or that access terms are unchanged.
How to show seconds on the Windows 11 clock
The clock preference is optional. To enable the larger clock with seconds:
- Open Settings.
- Select Time & language.
- Open Date & time.
- Turn on Show time in the Notification Center.
The larger clock appears above the date and calendar in Notification Center. Microsoft’s later overview also described Notification Center support on secondary monitors, including the larger clock.

Canary preview first
Build 27938 was announced on September 8, 2025 for the Canary Channel. Microsoft warned that Canary features could be modified, removed or never ship outside Insider testing. Features could also be enabled gradually for only a subset of Insiders.
Release Preview documentation
By September 2025, Microsoft’s Release Preview notes discussed the changes for Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2. Those notes distinguished gradual rollout from normal availability: an eligible device might not receive a gradually released feature immediately.

The same notes said File Explorer AI actions were not available to customers in the European Economic Area at that time. They also indicated that the larger seconds clock was available through the August 2025 non-security update.
Later rollout language
Microsoft’s October 16, 2025 overview described the features as rolling out and reiterated the image actions, document-summary requirements and secondary-monitor clock support. Microsoft published newer Insider and Release Preview builds during 2026, so Build 27938 should be read as a historical 2025 preview milestone rather than current release news.
What to check if you do not see the features
- Confirm that your Windows version and update channel match the build or rollout being discussed.
- Install the latest applicable Windows update, then restart and check File Explorer’s context menu again.
- For image actions, test a .jpg, .jpeg or .png file and verify that Photos and Paint are installed and up to date.
- Remember that gradual rollouts may not be enabled on every eligible device at the same time.
- If you are in the European Economic Area, note that Microsoft specifically excluded AI actions there in its September 2025 Release Preview notes.
- For document summaries, verify both an active Microsoft 365 subscription and a Copilot license.
Why the changes matter
