ChatGPT is most useful as a flexible assistant for generating, explaining, analyzing, retrieving, and organizing information. You can use it to draft and revise writing, study with guided practice, work with files and images, analyze data, write or debug code, search for current information, and coordinate longer projects. The exact tools available depend on your plan, account, device, and workspace.

What can you use ChatGPT for?

OpenAI’s FAQ describes everyday uses including brainstorming, writing, studying, planning, math, coding, and analyzing images and files. In practice, applications differ mainly by the task, the information you provide, the output format you need, and how carefully the result must be checked.

Application Typical input Useful output Verification burden
Generate A goal, audience, examples, or constraints Ideas, drafts, plans, code, practice questions Check accuracy, originality, tone, and fit
Explain A concept, question, or attempted solution Plain-language explanations, examples, stepwise guidance Compare with authoritative or course material
Analyze Text, images, spreadsheets, or structured files Summaries, extracted fields, patterns, calculations, charts Recheck source data, arithmetic, and interpretation
Retrieve A current question or research objective Search results, cited synthesis, key sources Open citations and confirm dates and claims
Act and organize Instructions, project context, files, and deadlines Checklists, coordinated drafts, recurring reminders, project context Confirm permissions, settings, and final decisions

Writing and communication

Brainstorming and outlining

Describe the audience, purpose, format, length, and constraints before asking for ideas. ChatGPT can turn a vague objective into possible angles, an outline, interview questions, or a decision checklist. Ask it to label assumptions so you can remove ideas that do not fit your situation.

Drafting, editing, and critique

Provide source material and request a specific transformation: a concise email, an executive summary, a clearer explanation, or a rewrite in a defined tone. For editing, ask for a list of substantive changes separately from a clean version. Review names, dates, quotations, legal or policy language, and any claim that matters to the reader.

Translation and personal messages

ChatGPT can translate and adapt messages for formality, cultural context, or reading level. Have a fluent person check high-stakes, sensitive, or legally significant translations; a fluent-sounding sentence can still miss context.

Learning, teaching, and study mode

Explanations and practice

You can ask for a concept to be explained at your level, request an analogy, generate practice questions, or simulate an oral examination. Include what you have already tried and where you are stuck; that gives the response a useful starting point.

Guided learning with study mode

OpenAI introduced study mode on July 29, 2025 as a way to provide step-by-step guidance instead of quick answers. Its intended behavior is to ask questions calibrated to a learner’s objectives and skill level. It is a learning aid, not evidence that outcomes will automatically improve.

  1. State the subject, course level, learning goal, and deadline.
  2. Show your attempt or explain the part you do not understand.
  3. Ask for hints or questions before the final solution.
  4. Work through the problem yourself and compare each step with course material.
  5. Finish with a new, similar problem without looking at the explanation.

Coding, mathematics, and technical problem solving

Code generation and debugging

ChatGPT can propose code, explain an error, refactor a function, write tests, and translate between languages. Supply the language version, framework, operating system, error message, expected behavior, and a minimal reproducible example. Run the result in a controlled environment, inspect dependencies and permissions, and test edge cases before using it in production.

Math and quantitative reasoning

Ask for a symbolic derivation, a worked example, or a check of your own calculation. Require intermediate steps and verify important results with an independent calculator, spreadsheet, or trusted reference. A confident explanation does not guarantee correct arithmetic.

OpenAI’s Economic Research analysis classified 4.2% of messages in its analyzed dataset as computer programming. That is a source-specific share of messages, not a universal rate for all users or periods.

Working with documents, spreadsheets, and images

Documents and extraction

Upload a supported document to summarize sections, extract fields, compare versions, or turn prose into a table. Specify whether you need a faithful summary, quoted evidence, or a transformation. Check that important passages were included and that extracted values match the original file.

Spreadsheets and structured data

For a spreadsheet or other structured file, define the question, identify the relevant columns, and state any business rules. ChatGPT can help calculate, clean, summarize, and visualize data, including by running code in a secure analysis environment where supported. Reconcile totals with the original workbook and inspect formulas, missing values, units, and outliers.

Images, diagrams, and screenshots

You can ask about a chart, diagram, photograph, interface screenshot, or scanned page, and you can generate or edit images where those tools are available. State what to inspect and ask it to distinguish visible evidence from inference. Do not rely on image interpretation alone for safety, medical, identity, or compliance decisions.

OpenAI documents these capabilities but does not guarantee correct interpretation for every file, image, format, or calculation.

Search and research

Finding current information

ChatGPT Search is intended for questions where freshness matters. Ask for the publication date, geographic scope, and primary sources, then open the cited pages yourself. Search results can be incomplete, outdated, or misinterpreted.

Multi-source synthesis with deep research

Deep research is presented as a multi-step process that synthesizes multiple online sources into a cited, structured output. Use it to map a topic, compare documented positions, or assemble a starting brief. Treat every citation as a lead to verify: check the original wording, publication date, methodology, and whether the source actually supports the conclusion.

Voice, collaboration, and organization

Voice conversations

Voice enables spoken back-and-forth interaction, useful for rehearsal, language practice, brainstorming while away from a keyboard, or accessibility needs. Confirm important details in text before acting on them.

Canvas for co-writing and debugging

Canvas provides a shared editing space for revising a document or working through code. Use it when you need iterative changes to a visible draft rather than a sequence of disconnected chat replies.

Projects, memory, and custom GPTs

Projects organize chats, files, and context around an objective. Memory can personalize responses when enabled. Custom GPTs let you set tailored instructions and selected knowledge. Review what information is retained, who can access a workspace, and whether confidential material is appropriate to upload.

Scheduled tasks

Scheduled tasks are available to some users and can handle recurring prompts or reminders. Confirm the task’s schedule, time zone, notification behavior, and permissions; availability is not uniform across accounts.

How people use ChatGPT at work

OpenAI’s January 22, 2026 workplace report describes use of writing, coding, analysis, search, file uploads, retrieval, and Canvas. Examples include generating and debugging code, interpreting data, answering internal IT questions, and finding information in workplace materials. The report says advanced tool use is more common in technical or research-heavy roles.

The same report says more than a quarter of U.S. workers self-reported using ChatGPT for work, including 45% of workers with postgraduate degrees. These are self-reported U.S. figures from OpenAI’s report, not worldwide adoption or independently verified productivity measures.

OpenAI’s August 6, 2026 analysis of its own measured usage found that work users were more than twice as likely to use ChatGPT to complete a task or create something than outside work. It also reported that multimedia use accounted for 7.8% of messages after the April 2026 launch of ChatGPT Images 2.0, exceeding one in ten messages in countries including Brazil and Colombia. These percentages describe that analysis and period, not every user or product surface.

A practical workplace pattern

  1. Define the business outcome, audience, deadline, and decision owner.
  2. Provide approved context, files, terminology, and examples; remove unnecessary sensitive data.
  3. Request a format such as a table, ticket, draft, code diff, or action list.
  4. Ask for assumptions, uncertainty, and supporting sources.
  5. Have a responsible person verify facts, calculations, permissions, security, and compliance.
  6. Record the final human decision and keep the underlying source material.

A reliable workflow for almost any use

  1. Define the task: Say what success looks like and who will use the result.
  2. Supply context: Include relevant source text, data, constraints, and your current attempt.
  3. Choose the interaction: Ask for generation, explanation, analysis, retrieval, or a guided dialogue.
  4. Specify the output: Name the format, length, tone, fields, and level of detail.
  5. Request uncertainty: Ask it to separate facts, assumptions, estimates, and open questions.
  6. Inspect the result: Check claims, arithmetic, citations, code behavior, privacy, and omissions.
  7. Revise deliberately: Correct errors and make the final judgment yourself.

Limits, access, and verification

Feature access can vary by plan, product surface, platform, region, workspace policy, and account settings. A capability description means the product is designed to support that task; it is not a guarantee of accuracy on every prompt or file. Use extra caution for medical, legal, financial, employment, safety, privacy, and other high-impact decisions.

OpenAI’s published usage analyses describe OpenAI datasets, classifications, or self-reported groups. They do not establish a universal accuracy rate, productivity gain, learning effect, or causal impact. Choose the tool and verification level to match the consequences of being wrong.
