Canonical’s Everything LTS, announced on 26 June 2024, is a paid, customer-specific service that designs and builds OCI-compliant container images for open-source applications and proprietary applications’ dependency bases. Canonical says the images can be distroless or Ubuntu-based, with security maintenance for open-source components in the dependency tree for up to 12 years. That duration is the launch announcement’s commitment; buyers should confirm the current contract and service terms before treating it as a guarantee.

What Canonical’s distroless Docker image service does

Everything LTS extends Ubuntu Pro’s security-maintenance model beyond software already packaged as Ubuntu .deb packages. Canonical says customers can request either:

  • An image designed to run a specific open-source application.
  • A base image containing dependencies for a proprietary application.

Canonical analyses the requested dependency tree, identifies open-source components that are not already covered by Ubuntu Pro, brings those components under CVE maintenance, and builds the image. The result is described as OCI-compliant, so it can be used with standard container tooling rather than a Canonical-only runtime.

Mark Shuttleworth, Canonical’s CEO, described the scope this way: “Everything LTS means CVE maintenance for your entire open source dependency tree, including open source that is not already packaged as a deb in Ubuntu”.

How the distroless and Chiseled approach works

Distroless runtime images

Canonical describes a distroless container as containing only the files required to run one application. The design removes surplus utilities and other content from the runtime image. This can reduce what is present in production, but the supplied product material does not independently measure a particular workload’s security or performance improvement.

Chiseled Ubuntu

Canonical’s Chiseled Ubuntu method uses Ubuntu and Chisel to retain application requirements while excluding surplus distribution metadata and tools. Developers can keep the familiar Ubuntu build toolchain, then produce a smaller production artifact. A build that is not chiselled can retain familiar tools for testing and debugging; the chiselled output is intended for the deployed runtime.

What “up to 12 years” means

The 26 June 2024 launch announcement says a custom Everything LTS image can receive up to 12 years of security maintenance. “Up to” matters: the duration and the exact components covered belong in the service order and should be checked against Canonical’s current terms. The announcement does not establish a public price or a universal, automatically applied 12-year entitlement for every image.

Canonical also says an Ubuntu Pro subscription includes the right to run unlimited Everything LTS containers. Ubuntu Pro is an additional subscription layer on Ubuntu LTS, with its own package coverage and subscription scope. Read those legal terms together with the service-specific order rather than assuming that every dependency, image, or maintenance obligation is covered identically.

Canonical’s current general Ubuntu Containers overview uses “up to 15 years” wording for container security updates. That broader portfolio statement should not be substituted for the specific 12-year Everything LTS launch promise.

Where the images can run

Canonical says Everything LTS images can run on:

  • Ubuntu hosts.
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) hosts.
  • VMware Kubernetes environments.
  • Major public-cloud Kubernetes services.

The announcement says RHEL, VMware and public-cloud hosts are supported at the same price as Ubuntu Pro hosts. What Canonical handles

The service is more than a base-image download. Canonical’s stated work includes:

  1. Reviewing the application or requested dependency base.
  2. Analysing the complete open-source dependency tree.
  3. Finding components not already covered by Ubuntu Pro.
  4. Taking those uncovered components into CVE-maintenance coverage.
  5. Designing and building the requested Ubuntu-based or distroless image.
  6. Maintaining the image through the agreed support period.

This model shifts image construction and vulnerability remediation from an internal platform team to a vendor-managed service. It also means the support boundary must be written down: ask which versions, transitive dependencies, rebuild triggers, and remediation response times are included.

How this differs from building your own minimal image

An internal team can create a small image with multi-stage builds, a minimal base and its own vulnerability-scanning pipeline. Everything LTS’s distinction is the vendor service around that image: Canonical says it analyses dependencies, maintains uncovered open-source components and delivers the resulting artifact. The trade-off is less in-house maintenance work in exchange for reliance on Canonical’s supported scope, release process and contract.

A distroless image is not automatically safer simply because it is smaller. Removing tools can reduce available attack surface, but it can also make incident investigation and emergency fixes harder. Plan a separate debug workflow, retain symbols or diagnostics outside the production image where appropriate, and test the exact application behavior in the stripped runtime.

Bottom line for Ubuntu Pro users

Everything LTS is Canonical’s announced route to custom, maintained container images when an application depends on open-source software outside Ubuntu’s normal package set. Canonical presented up to 12 years of security maintenance and unlimited container-running entitlement with Ubuntu Pro, plus deployment on Ubuntu, RHEL, VMware Kubernetes and public-cloud Kubernetes. Those are announcement-level claims from June 2024, not a substitute for checking today’s service order, legal terms, supported versions and price.
