To use 1280×960 on a Radeon, select it in Windows or your game if it is listed. If it is missing, create a validated custom resolution in AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition, then choose how the 4:3 image should fit your monitor: preserve its shape, stretch it, or leave it unscaled.
What 1280×960 means on a modern display
1280×960 has a 4:3 aspect ratio. On a 16:9 or 16:10 monitor, the image cannot fill the panel without changing its geometry. With aspect-ratio preservation, expect vertical black bars; with full-panel scaling, circles and other shapes become wider.
The available refresh rates are determined by the monitor, its supported timings, the connector, the Radeon model and driver. There is no refresh rate that works universally. AMD’s Radeon 7000 user guide lists 1280×960 at 75 Hz for that hardware generation, but that listing does not guarantee the same mode on another display or Radeon system.
Choose how Radeon scales 1280×960
| AMD setting | Result on a widescreen panel | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Preserve aspect ratio | Keeps the 4:3 shape and normally adds vertical black bars. | Older games, competitive play or any application where undistorted geometry matters. |
| Full panel | Expands the image to the entire display and stretches 4:3 content horizontally. | Users who prefer a full-screen picture and accept distortion. |
| Center | Disables scaling. The 1280×960 image remains at its original size with borders around it. | Unscaled output or troubleshooting. |
AMD documents GPU Scaling for digital DVI, HDMI and DisplayPort connections. Set the display to its native resolution and refresh rate while configuring the feature. The screen may go blank briefly when GPU Scaling is switched.

Enable GPU Scaling in AMD Software
- Open AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition.
- Open the Display settings for the monitor you want to configure.
- Turn on GPU Scaling.
- Select Preserve aspect ratio, Full panel or Center.
- Apply the setting and check the image in Windows or in the game using 1280×960.
If the display briefly loses its picture, wait for the mode change to complete. If it does not return, use the display’s input control or Windows display recovery to restore a supported mode.
Create 1280×960 when it is missing
AMD Software’s Custom Resolutions feature is the supported route when Windows or a game does not list the mode.

- Open AMD Software and search for Custom Resolution.
- Select the target display.
- Accept the first-use agreement if prompted.
- Choose Create New.
- Enter 1280 for horizontal resolution and 960 for vertical resolution.
- Choose a refresh rate and timing values supported by the display. Do not assume that 75 Hz, or any other rate, is safe for every monitor.
- Click Create. AMD Software validates the combination and saves valid profiles.
- Apply the saved profile through Windows Display settings or the game’s video menu.
A custom profile is not a way to bypass the monitor’s limits. Validation depends on the panel, connection, driver and Radeon hardware. If AMD rejects the profile or the monitor reports an unsupported signal, use a lower refresh rate or the display’s documented timing options.
Use integer scaling for a crisp, pixel-art image
Integer Scaling is different from ordinary aspect-ratio scaling. It enlarges a low-resolution image by whole-pixel multiples, avoiding fractional interpolation that can soften pixel art. It requires GPU Scaling and can be enabled globally or overridden in an individual game profile.

Because integer multiples may not fit the panel’s exact dimensions or shape, AMD centers content when the geometry cannot match. That can produce borders even when Full panel would otherwise fill the screen. Use ordinary Preserve aspect ratio for general 4:3 games; use Integer Scaling when sharp pixel edges are the priority.

Windows
- Open Settings → System → Display.
- Select the Radeon-connected monitor.
- Open Display resolution and choose 1280×960 if the validated mode is listed.
- Open Advanced display and select a refresh rate that the display accepts for that mode.
In a game
Open the game’s video or graphics menu, select 1280×960 and apply it. Some games use their own scaling or aspect-ratio controls, so the in-game result can differ from the Windows desktop. If the game does not list the mode, create the custom profile first and restart the game if necessary.

Troubleshoot a missing or unusable mode
- 1280×960 is absent: Create it under Custom Resolution and use only refresh rates and timings supported by the monitor.
- The picture is stretched: In AMD Software → Display, change Full panel to Preserve aspect ratio.
- Black bars are unwanted: Select Full panel, understanding that 4:3 content will be distorted.
- The image is surrounded by borders: Check whether Center or Integer Scaling is enabled. Switch to Preserve aspect ratio or Full panel as appropriate.
- The screen goes blank: A brief blank is normal when GPU Scaling changes. If the signal does not return, restore a known-supported Windows mode and retry with a lower refresh rate.
- The custom profile is rejected: The requested timing is outside the limits reported by the display, connector, driver or Radeon hardware. Try the display’s native timing guidance rather than copying a rate from another system.
Which configuration should you use?
- Choose Preserve aspect ratio for an undistorted 4:3 picture.
- Choose Full panel when filling the entire widescreen panel matters more than geometric accuracy.
- Choose Center when you want no scaling at all.
- Choose Integer Scaling for crisp pixel-art enlargement, accepting that the result may be centered with borders.
- Use Custom Resolution only when 1280×960 is not already exposed, and let AMD validate the display-compatible profile.
