No—HDMI ARC does not inherently conflict with an RTX 3090 or Windows 11. The RTX 3090 sends picture and audio to the TV over HDMI. ARC or eARC then sends the TV’s audio back to a soundbar or AV receiver through the TV port labeled ARC/eARC. When sound disappears, the usual causes are the wrong Windows output, an EDID/HDMI handshake failure, an unsupported audio format, a driver or firmware change, an incorrect port, or a faulty/uncertified cable.
How the connections are supposed to work
Use this signal path:
- Connect an RTX 3090 HDMI output to any suitable HDMI input on the TV.
- Connect the TV’s specifically labeled HDMI ARC or HDMI eARC port to the matching ARC/eARC port on the soundbar or AV receiver.
- In Windows 11, choose the HDMI display or receiver as the playback device.
The ARC-labeled TV socket is still an HDMI input for the GPU. ARC describes the return channel from the TV to the audio device; it is not a second GPU input and does not compete with the 3090.
What can look like an ARC conflict
Windows selected a different playback device
Windows can switch to motherboard audio, a monitor, a headset, or another display after a reboot or driver installation. Open Settings > System > Sound, select the HDMI display/receiver, and set it as the default output when appropriate. Confirm that volume is not muted and that the receiver is on its HDMI-ARC/eARC input.
NVIDIA HDMI audio is disabled
Open NVIDIA Control Panel > Display > Set up digital audio. For the connected TV, select the option that exposes the display as an audio device in Windows Sound settings. NVIDIA’s documentation also provides a Turn off audio option; if that is selected, Windows will not offer that HDMI path for playback.

EDID or HDMI-handshake failure
EDID is the display’s capability information. A failed handshake can make the HDMI audio endpoint vanish, show the wrong channel count, or change after sleep, input switching, or a driver update. Docks, HDMI switches, adapters, capture devices, extra monitors, and long cable runs increase the number of devices that must agree.
The selected format is unsupported
A TV or receiver may accept stereo PCM but reject a particular multichannel PCM, Dolby, DTS, or bitstream mode. The result can be silence, blanking, or automatic fallback. Start with stereo PCM, then add multichannel or compressed formats one at a time.

Port, cable, firmware, or driver problems
ARC works only through the correctly labeled TV and soundbar/receiver ports. A cable can also fail at the required speed or lose signal integrity. Firmware on the TV or audio device and the NVIDIA display driver can alter HDMI behavior without any hardware conflict.

eARC does not make the RTX 3090 a different kind of HDMI source. It gives the TV-to-audio return link more capacity. The TV, receiver, source app, and selected Windows format must all support the desired result.

Which wiring arrangement is best?

Step-by-step recovery sequence
- Verify the topology. The 3090 must connect to a TV HDMI input. The TV’s labeled ARC/eARC port must connect to the soundbar or receiver’s matching port. Do not assume every TV HDMI socket supports ARC.
- Select the output in Windows. Go to Settings > System > Sound and select the HDMI display or receiver. Make it the default output if you want Windows applications to use it automatically.
- Check NVIDIA’s digital-audio setting. In NVIDIA Control Panel > Display > Set up digital audio, ensure the intended display is exposed as an audio device rather than having audio turned off.
- Reduce the system to a single direct path. Disconnect docks, adapters, HDMI switches, capture devices, and extra displays. Power off the PC, TV, and audio device; turn the TV and audio device back on, select the correct inputs, then boot the PC. This forces a fresh HDMI/EDID handshake.
- Inspect Device Manager. Expand Sound, video and game controllers. If the HDMI endpoint is absent, enable hidden devices and use Action > Scan for hardware changes.
- Recheck software versions. Install current motherboard, GPU display, and audio drivers from the relevant manufacturers. If the problem began immediately after an NVIDIA update, revisit the Windows default-output selection and NVIDIA digital-audio setting before assuming hardware failure.
- Test a known-good cable and port. Use an “Ultra High Speed HDMI cable eARC compatible” cable and the TV’s correctly labeled ARC/eARC socket. Cable replacement can isolate link-integrity or certification problems, but it cannot repair a driver or firmware defect.
- Test formats progressively. Begin with stereo PCM. If that works, try multichannel PCM, then the Dolby or other bitstream mode supported by both the TV and receiver. Return to the last working format if silence or blanking appears.
Why audio may disappear after an NVIDIA update
An NVIDIA display-driver update can recreate or reorder HDMI audio endpoints. Windows may then retain a monitor, motherboard output, or headset as the default instead of the TV path. Check the Sound output list and NVIDIA’s Set up digital audio page first. If the endpoint remains missing even after a cold restart and a direct cable connection, inspect Device Manager and update the TV/receiver firmware as well as the PC drivers.

The RTX 3090 supports sending digital video and audio over HDMI to an HDTV. There is no documented universal RTX 3090-plus-Windows-11 ARC bug that explains every case. Identifying a specific failure requires the TV model, soundbar or receiver model, exact port labels, firmware versions, NVIDIA driver version, when the symptom began, and the audio format selected. Those details distinguish a port-direction mistake from EDID, driver, format, cable, or firmware behavior.
