Use 90–99.5% electronics-grade isopropyl alcohol (IPA) on a lint-free cloth or foam-tipped swab. Shut down and unplug the computer, remove the PCI or PCIe card, wipe its gold edge contacts gently, and let the alcohol evaporate completely before reinstalling it. Never flood or immerse the card or slot.

Best cleaner for PCI and PCIe gold contacts

High-purity electronics-grade IPA is the simplest choice for removing light dirt, skin oils and residue from a card’s gold fingers. Apply only a small amount to a lint-free or foam applicator; the applicator should be damp, not dripping.

A plastic-safe, fast-drying, residue-free electronics contact cleaner can be considered for oxidation or more persistent contamination, but use it only when the label or technical documentation confirms compatibility with the card, slot plastics and nearby materials.

How the common options compare

Option Where it fits Important qualification
90–99.5% electronics-grade IPA Default for light dirt, oils and residue on edge contacts Flammable; use with power removed and adequate ventilation, then allow complete evaporation
99.5% electronic-grade IPA Specified for edge-connector cleaning in ABB/Bailey Infi90 guidance Use a small amount on a lint-free applicator; do not immerse the connector
80% IPA / 20% distilled water Another edge-connector mixture specified in ABB/Bailey Infi90 guidance Requires thorough drying before reassembly; do not assume every card or slot manufacturer approves it
70% IPA Specified by Honeywell for flat electrical contacts Contains more water, so drying and material-specific guidance are especially important
Residue-free contact cleaner Conditional option for oxidation or stubborn contamination Verify that it is non-conductive, fast-drying, plastic-safe and compatible with every exposed material; test on a sacrificial part if uncertain

How to clean a PCI or PCIe card

  1. Remove power. Shut the computer down, switch off the power supply if it has a switch, unplug the power cord and disconnect other power sources. Cleaning with alcohol should be done with the equipment power cord removed and in a well-ventilated area.
  2. Remove the card. Ground yourself against the chassis, release the retaining screw or latch, and pull the card straight out without twisting. Hold it by the bracket or edges rather than the gold contacts.
  3. Clear loose dust first. Use clean, dry, filtered air or an antistatic field-service vacuum where practical. Keep the air stream controlled so dust is not driven deeper into the slot.
  4. Dampen the applicator. Dip a clean lint-free swab or use a lint-free cloth with IPA, then press out excess liquid on a clean lint-free towel. Do not soak the swab or spray directly into the slot.
  5. Wipe the gold fingers. Use light pressure and short, controlled strokes in the direction of the contact fingers. Avoid abrasive scrubbing, scraping and any attempt to bend the slot contacts.
  6. Dry completely. Wait for the alcohol to evaporate, then use a fresh lint-free cloth or gentle clean air if needed. The connector must be completely dry before it is used.
  7. Inspect before reinstalling. Check for residue, corrosion, bent contacts, missing plating or physical damage. Reinstall only when the contacts and surrounding card are dry and intact.

What to use instead of a Q-tip

Choose a lint-free foam swab, non-fibrous electronics swab or lint-free cloth. Ordinary cotton swabs can leave fibers and may shed material into the slot, so they are less suitable than purpose-made foam or lint-free applicators. Whatever you use, keep the solvent volume low and avoid pressure that could damage plating or edge geometry.

Is contact cleaner safe for a PCIe slot?

It can be, but “contact cleaner” is not a sufficient specification by itself. Before using one, confirm all of the following on its label or technical documentation:

  • It dries quickly and leaves no conductive or oily residue.
  • It is non-conductive when applied as directed.
  • It is safe for the slot’s plastics, card coatings, solder mask and other nearby materials.
  • Its flammability precautions are understood and followed.
  • The manufacturer does not prohibit use on connectorized assemblies.

If material compatibility is uncertain, try the cleaner on a sacrificial piece of the same plastic or on an expendable connector first. Do not spray a large volume into a PCIe slot: solvent can become trapped inside a connector assembly and cause electrical problems.

When cleaning will not fix the problem

Stop cleaning and arrange repair or replacement if inspection finds bent or missing contacts, deeply corroded metal, worn-away plating or physical damage to the card or slot. More solvent cannot restore missing metal or correct mechanical alignment. A card that still fails after a careful, fully dry cleaning may have a hardware fault elsewhere.
