Sometimes—but “sucks” describes a mismatch of priorities, not a universal verdict. Windows tablets remain unusually capable when you need desktop applications, windowed multitasking and extensive configuration. They can feel awkward when you expect the simple, touch-first navigation, text entry and app quality associated with an iPad or many Android tablets. A July 15, 2022 AnandTech forum thread captured that conflict through one user’s complaints about gestures, settings and app switching; replies disagreed and blamed the shortage of tablet-aware apps rather than Windows alone.
What the original complaint was actually about
The AnandTech discussion titled “Discussion – Rant -Windows still sucks for a Tablet” is one poster’s experience, not a usability study or representative survey. The post describes Windows 8/8.1/10/11 tablet use as disjointed, with a perceived separation between desktop and touch settings, friction when switching apps and multi-step swipes to reach controls.
Other participants pushed back. Some valued Windows 10’s configurability, while others argued that the bigger problem was the lack of applications designed for tablet-sized touch targets and layouts. A different group preferred running full desktop software on a tablet and accepted the compromises compared with iPadOS or Android.
That makes the argument easier to evaluate: Windows prioritizes desktop capability and flexibility, while iPad and Android generally prioritize touch simplicity and a tablet-oriented app ecosystem.

How Windows 11 tablet behavior works now
Windows 11 does not provide a manual tablet-mode switch. Microsoft says it changes tablet behavior automatically when a keyboard is detached or a device is converted into tablet form, then returns to laptop behavior when the keyboard is attached or the device returns to a conventional laptop position.
This automatic model removes a setting that some users might want to control, but it also avoids requiring a separate toggle every time a detachable device changes form. If your hardware does not report its posture or keyboard state correctly, the experience can still feel inconsistent; that is a device-detection issue rather than a hidden tablet-mode menu.

Windows 10 should not be treated as a currently supported alternative: Microsoft lists October 14, 2025 as the end of support. A Windows 10 tablet may continue to run, but it no longer receives normal support after that date, so security and upgrade planning matter.
Why touch use can feel less coherent than on an iPad or Android tablet
Desktop and touch conventions share the same shell
Windows has to serve pointer, keyboard, pen and finger input in one operating environment. Controls, menus and legacy desktop programs were not all designed for touch, so the same task may require different gestures or larger-screen precision than it would on a touch-first platform.

Tablet-aware apps are a separate constraint
Even a well-designed system cannot make a desktop application behave like a tablet app. If an app has tiny controls, narrow touch targets or a desktop-only workflow, Windows may feel poor despite having functional touch support. This is the strongest explanation offered by replies in the thread: the app catalog and app design can matter more than the operating system’s gesture layer.
Multitasking changes the trade-off
Windows’ resizable windows, file management and desktop software are advantages for people who work across several apps. They also introduce more controls to discover and manipulate with a finger. A user who wants one full-screen app at a time may experience that flexibility as clutter; a user who wants overlapping windows may consider it essential.

Windows tablet versus iPad or Android: choose by task
| Priority | Windows tablet | iPad or Android tablet |
|---|---|---|
| Desktop applications | Best fit when you need traditional Windows software, file-system access or established desktop workflows. | Usually requires a mobile or tablet version of the app, or a remote-access workaround. |
| Touch-first navigation | Usable, but the experience varies with Windows version, hardware posture detection and each app’s touch design. | Generally built around touch interaction from the start. |
| Tablet-oriented app availability | Quality depends heavily on whether each Windows app is touch-aware; the forum identifies this as a central weakness. | Often stronger for apps designed specifically for tablet screens, though availability still varies by platform and region. |
| Multitasking and configuration | Windowed multitasking, peripherals and desktop customization are major strengths. | Multitasking models are more constrained or platform-specific, which can make basic touch flows simpler. |
| Keyboard and pointer use | A detachable keyboard and trackpad can make it behave like a conventional PC. | Keyboard and pointer accessories exist, but the desktop experience remains platform-dependent. |
| Pen or stylus workflows | Depends on the device and compatible applications. | Depends on the model and operating system; verify pen support for the exact tablet. |
There is no controlled head-to-head test behind the forum debate, so the table is a decision guide rather than a performance ranking.
When a Windows tablet is the sensible choice
- You need a Windows-only business, engineering, creative or legacy application.
- You regularly move between a tablet form factor and a laptop-style desk setup.
- You value normal desktop file handling, external displays, peripherals and resizable windows.
- You are willing to choose touch-friendly applications individually instead of assuming every desktop app will work well with fingers.
When an iPad or Android tablet is likely to feel better
- Your work is mostly reading, video, browsing, drawing or mobile-optimized communication.
- You want consistent full-screen touch navigation with minimal pointer-style controls.
- The apps you depend on have better tablet versions outside Windows.
- You rarely need traditional Windows desktop software or complex file-management workflows.
Keyboard accessories improve hybrid use—but not touch design
A physical keyboard can address the most immediate laptop-mode complaints: slow touch typing, lack of a pointer and difficulty with precision selections. Microsoft lists its Surface Pro 13-inch Keyboard as compatible with Surface Pro (11th Edition), Surface Pro 10 for Business, Surface Pro 9, Surface Pro 8 and Surface Pro X. It includes a touchpad and is sold through the Microsoft Store and other retailers.

Check the exact Surface generation before buying; compatibility is not universal across every Surface device. The keyboard makes a supported Surface more practical as a laptop, but it cannot turn a desktop application into a touch-optimized app or resolve dissatisfaction with Windows’ touch navigation.
Touch keyboard basics and version caveats
Windows includes an on-screen touch keyboard. Microsoft documents settings that can show it when a device is in tablet mode without an attached physical keyboard. The exact labels and behavior vary by Windows version, so follow instructions for the installed release rather than assuming a Windows 10 path applies to Windows 11.
For reliable text entry, keep a physical keyboard available if you write often, use keyboard shortcuts or work in applications with small controls. The on-screen keyboard is a fallback for occasional entry, not proof that every Windows workflow is comfortable without accessories.
A practical decision checklist
- List the applications that matter. Confirm whether each has a touch-friendly Windows version or is fundamentally a desktop program.
- Decide which input mode dominates. If you will type and use a pointer most of the day, budget for a compatible keyboard; if you will hold the device in one hand, test the apps with fingers.
- Test the exact hardware posture. Detach and reattach the keyboard, rotate the device and verify that Windows changes behavior as expected.
- Check your Windows support status. Do not plan a new workflow around Windows 10 after its October 14, 2025 support end date; use a supported Windows release and device instead.
- Compare the app ecosystem, not only specifications. Try the specific note-taking, drawing, streaming, office and communications apps you will use before committing to a platform.
Bottom line: Windows tablets are powerful hybrids, not oversized iPads
The 2022 forum rant is credible as a personal frustration but too narrow to prove that Windows tablets are universally bad. Windows 11’s automatic tablet behavior, uneven touch experience and dependence on app design can make a tablet feel disjointed. At the same time, desktop software, configurable multitasking and a proper keyboard can make the same device far more capable than a touch-first tablet.
