Yes—but mainly as portable external storage. Western Digital announced 6TB 2.5-inch portable HDD products in 2024, while Toshiba’s 2025 catalog lists internal 2.5-inch laptop drives only up to 2TB. Current high-capacity roadmaps focus on data-center and 3.5-inch drives, not laptop-bay models. The likely future is therefore split: portable USB hard drives can keep gaining capacity, but a return of very large internal 2.5-inch SATA drives is not demonstrated by the available evidence.
What “2.5-inch high-capacity” means
“2.5-inch” identifies a drive’s general form factor, not a guaranteed thickness, connector or installation method. A portable USB hard drive, a bare SATA laptop drive and a drive inside a proprietary enclosure can all be marketed around the 2.5-inch format while differing in height and interfaces.
That distinction matters because the 6TB products announced by Western Digital are portable product lines. The announcement does not establish that they contain a standard, laptop-bay-compatible SATA mechanism, nor that they can be safely removed (“shucked”) and installed internally. Check the exact model’s dimensions, interface and warranty before treating any portable drive as an internal upgrade.
What is available now?
6TB portable products exist
On May 16, 2024, Western Digital announced 6TB capacities for the WD My Passport, WD_BLACK P10 Game Drive and SanDisk Professional G-DRIVE ArmorATD portable lines. WD called this “the world’s first 2.5” 6TB* portable hard drive,” a characterization that should be understood as the company’s own claim. Read WD’s announcement.

These products answer the need for large, bus-powered or externally connected spinning storage for backups, media libraries and game collections. They do not answer the separate question of whether a 6TB internal laptop-bay drive is broadly available.
Toshiba’s 2025 internal 2.5-inch ceiling is 2TB
Toshiba’s 2025 internal-HDD catalog lists the L200 2.5-inch laptop family at 1TB and 2TB. The 1TB model is listed at 7.0mm, while the 2TB model is 9.5mm; both are SATA, 5,400 rpm, have a 128MB buffer and use SMR recording according to the catalog. This is a snapshot of Toshiba’s lineup, not proof that no other regional or specialist model above 2TB exists. It does show that a mainstream manufacturer’s documented internal 2.5-inch range remains far below its portable 6TB announcement.

A 9.5mm laptop bay cannot accept every 2.5-inch product, and an ultrathin system may require a 7mm drive or no mechanical drive at all. USB enclosure electronics also mean that the internal mechanism, if accessible, may not behave like a retail SATA model.

Where the capacity roadmap is going
Near-term development targets data centers
Western Digital’s February 3, 2026 roadmap describes a 40TB UltraSMR ePMR HDD in qualification with two hyperscale customers, with volume production planned for the second half of 2026. It also says HAMR qualifications are under way with two hyperscale customers, ramp production is planned for 2027, and the company aims to scale HAMR to 100TB by 2029. These are company plans and qualification statements, not independently verified shipments.
The same release describes Dual Pivot as technology for a 3.5-inch drive expected to become available in 2028. It gives no target for a high-capacity internal 2.5-inch laptop drive. Read WD’s 2026 roadmap announcement.

Why those technologies do not automatically shrink into laptops
Hyperscale drives can use larger 3.5-inch chassis, substantial power budgets, enterprise cooling and racks designed around their dimensions. A laptop-bay drive must meet strict limits on height, heat, power draw, shock tolerance and acoustic output. A capacity breakthrough for a 3.5-inch data-center platform therefore does not imply an equivalent 2.5-inch SATA product.
Recording technology can also affect performance. Toshiba marks the cited 1TB and 2TB L200 models as SMR; workloads with frequent random rewrites can behave differently from sequential backup workloads. The catalog does not establish comparable recording details for WD’s 6TB portable products, so their internal design should not be assumed.

What could change the outlook?
- Portable demand: Continued demand for inexpensive, high-capacity backup and archive devices gives manufacturers a reason to increase capacities in USB enclosures.
- Component economics: A new recording technology would need to fit the smaller chassis without making power, heat and reliability unacceptable.
- Laptop design: More laptops now use soldered or removable solid-state storage, reducing the space and market for thick mechanical secondary drives.
- Interface and enclosure design: A portable product can hide a custom or enclosure-integrated mechanism, so its capacity does not guarantee a separately sold internal SATA version.
None of these factors proves that a future 4TB, 6TB or larger internal 2.5-inch drive is impossible. They explain why the current evidence supports portable growth more strongly than a laptop-bay revival.
How to choose a solution today
If you need several terabytes you can carry
Choose a documented portable product such as a 6TB WD line, and treat it as a USB device. Confirm the regional model number, included cable, operating-system support and backup software before purchase. Keep a second copy of irreplaceable data; a single hard drive is not a backup strategy by itself.
If you need an internal laptop replacement
- Identify the computer’s bay height: 7mm and 9.5mm are not interchangeable in every chassis.
- Confirm whether the bay uses a standard SATA data-and-power connection rather than a proprietary carrier.
- Check the manufacturer’s maximum supported capacity and the operating system’s partitioning support.
- Verify the exact drive’s recording method and workload suitability; SMR can be a poor match for heavy rewrite workloads.
- Do not infer internal compatibility from a portable 6TB product listing. Obtain a specification sheet for the bare drive or an explicitly compatible enclosure.
If you need desktop or NAS capacity
Look at 3.5-inch products instead. Toshiba’s 2025 catalog places its 22TB N300 NAS and up-to-20TB X300 capacities in that larger form factor, illustrating where the cited consumer and NAS capacity points currently sit. Those figures are not specifications for 2.5-inch laptop drives.
What the evidence supports
The strongest defensible prediction is not a single capacity number but a product split. Portable 2.5-inch HDDs already reach 6TB in announced product lines and may continue to grow where USB convenience and low cost matter. Internal laptop-bay HDDs remain constrained by physical fit and a shrinking laptop market; Toshiba’s documented 2025 range stops at 2TB, and WD’s 2026 high-capacity roadmap addresses hyperscale 3.5-inch technology.

Consequently, buy a 2.5-inch portable HDD for external capacity, but do not plan a laptop upgrade around the expectation that a 6TB internal SATA model is imminent. Treat any future announcement as a new product claim that still requires checking height, connector, mechanism and warranty details.
