The 2TB model is rated for up to 7,000 MB/s sequential reads and 6,500 MB/s sequential writes, but those are peak figures. Long writes can slow substantially when the drive’s pSLC cache is exhausted, and sustained heat can trigger throttling. Diagnose the workload, temperature, PCIe link, drive health and firmware before considering replacement.
What performance the 2TB P41 is actually rated for
SK hynix’s January 2022 product brief lists the P41 2TB as an M.2 2280 PCIe Gen4 drive supporting up to four lanes, with peak sequential ratings of 7,000 MB/s read and 6,500 MB/s write. “Up to” describes a controlled peak result, not a guaranteed speed for every file copy, benchmark setting or computer.
| Specification or measurement | Value and qualification |
|---|---|
| Sequential read | Up to 7,000 MB/s (SK hynix product brief, January 2022) |
| Sequential write | Up to 6,500 MB/s (SK hynix product brief, January 2022) |
| Interface | PCIe Gen4, up to four lanes; the host slot must provide a matching link |
| Endurance | 1,200 TBW for the series (SK hynix announcement, May 2022); this is a rating, not a reading of your drive’s remaining life |
| Warranty | Five years was stated in the May 2022 announcement; regional terms and return routing depend on purchase channel |
A result far below those figures can be expected when the test uses random I/O, a low queue depth, a nearly full drive, a slower source disk, an operating-system workload, a PCIe Gen3 slot, or a short transfer that does not measure the same thing as the vendor’s test. Compare only like-for-like tests.
Why a large write can fall from several gigabytes per second
The P41 uses a faster pSLC write cache for an initial burst. Once that cache fills, incoming data is written to the underlying TLC NAND at a lower sustained rate. In Tom’s Hardware’s 2022 2TB test, the drive wrote about 6.6 GB/s for almost 50 seconds, then about 1.7 GB/s after the cache was exhausted. That is one test under its stated conditions, not a universal threshold for every P41 or every copy.

How to tell cache exhaustion from a fault
- Copy a small file set and a much larger, continuous file set separately. A fast start followed by a stable lower plateau during the long transfer is consistent with cache exhaustion.
- Record whether the slowdown is on writes, reads, or both. Cache exhaustion primarily explains sustained writes.
- Note the source drive. A hard disk, USB device or another busy SSD can cap the transfer before the P41 does.
- Do not interrupt a normal post-cache slowdown by repeatedly restarting the copy; that changes the cache state and makes comparisons unreliable.
Check temperature and possible thermal throttling
Heat can reduce speed independently of the pSLC cache. Tom’s Hardware reported a SMART throttle point of 86 °C and a critical point of 87 °C, with throttling observed around 84–86 °C sensor readings in its 2022 testing.
- Run the same sustained workload while logging the P41’s SMART temperature with a trusted storage utility.
- Compare the temperature at the moment performance drops. A speed fall that tracks temperatures in the mid-80s Celsius supports a thermal explanation; a drop at a much lower, stable temperature needs other investigation.
- Inspect the M.2 heatsink and thermal pad. The pad must contact the drive controller and the heatsink must be secured, without a protective film left on the pad.
- Check case or laptop airflow and nearby heat sources. Install a compatible M.2 2280 heatsink only when measurements and physical clearance justify it; verify clearance in a laptop or under a graphics card.
Temperature readings vary by sensor and software, so use the same utility and workload when comparing runs. Do not treat the review’s thresholds as a guarantee that your particular system will throttle at exactly the same value.

Verify the PCIe slot and system configuration
The drive can only approach Gen4 performance when the host supports the required link. Consult the motherboard or laptop manual to identify the intended M.2 slot, then use a reliable system utility to check the negotiated PCIe generation and lane width while the drive is installed.
- A Gen3 link, reduced lane width, chipset sharing or a slot disabled by another expansion device can limit bandwidth.
- Confirm that the benchmark is testing the P41 rather than another disk and that the drive is not being tested through a USB enclosure or adapter.
- Record capacity, used-space percentage, benchmark block size, queue depth and whether the P41 contains the running operating system. These settings can change results substantially.

- Back up important data.
- Close applications that read or write to the P41 and let background synchronization, antivirus scans and indexing finish.
- Leave adequate free space and avoid testing while another disk job is active.
- Run a short sequential read and write test, then a separate sustained-write test that is large enough to pass the cache.
- Save the benchmark version, settings, temperature, firmware version, PCIe link information and result for each run.
Check SMART health, media errors, unsafe shutdowns and available spare or percentage-used indicators in the utility you trust. A low speed alone is not a SMART failure. Errors, repeated link resets, I/O failures or a drive that disappears are more serious evidence.
Firmware: what is safe to do
SK hynix provides P41 firmware and Easy Kit downloads. The accessible support listing identifies firmware for the P41 2TB, 1TB and 500GB models but does not expose a current version number or change log, so no particular release can be claimed to fix low performance.

If you decide to update:
- Use a separate storage device for a verified backup, following the SK hynix Firmware Update Manual.
- Confirm that the package is for the P41 and your operating system.
- Connect reliable power; do not update during a storm, on a failing battery or while the system may sleep or restart.
- Close other disk-intensive programs and follow the current SK hynix instructions exactly.
- Do not power off or reset the computer during the update. An interruption can risk data loss or drive damage.
- Afterward, verify the firmware version, SMART health and the same controlled benchmark.
The manual says SK hynix may issue firmware to improve performance and user experience and recommends updating when the latest version is released. That recommendation does not establish that an update will correct your specific symptom.

SK hynix’s May 2022 announcement states a five-year warranty, but eligibility, proof-of-purchase requirements and return handling vary by region and seller. Start with the official SK hynix support channel or the distributor that sold the drive; do not assume a replacement is warranted from one low benchmark.
Quick Recap
A practical decision guide
| Observed pattern | Most useful next action |
|---|---|
| Fast start, then a stable lower write rate during a very large copy | Measure the full transfer and temperature; pSLC-cache exhaustion is a plausible explanation |
| Speed falls as the sensor approaches the mid-80s Celsius | Improve heatsink contact and airflow, then retest |
| All results are low, with a Gen3 or reduced-width negotiated link | Move the drive to the correct Gen4-capable slot or resolve slot sharing |
| Results vary while the OS, antivirus or another disk job is active | Repeat with background I/O stopped and record benchmark settings |
| Errors, disconnects or disappearance, regardless of benchmark result | Stop stressing the drive, preserve data and contact support or the seller |
