Texture filtering assigns a texture color to each rendered pixel. Bilinear filtering blends nearby texels within one texture-resolution level; trilinear filtering blends bilinear results from two mipmap levels. Both can smooth texture sampling, but neither is a universal form of anti-aliasing: geometric edge aliasing and texture minification require different treatments.

What texture filtering does

A texture is a grid of discrete texels, while a rendered pixel usually maps to a position between them. The sampler must estimate a color at that position. During magnification, one screen pixel may cover less than a texel, so poor sampling can expose blocky boundaries. During minification, one pixel may cover many texels; sampling too little of that detail causes shimmer, moiré patterns, or unstable flicker.

In signal-processing terms, aliasing occurs when a signal contains frequencies beyond what the output sampling rate can represent. Filtering suppresses those high-frequency components before sampling. The ideal operation would average the texture over the pixel’s complete footprint, but that footprint can be difficult to calculate efficiently in real time.

How bilinear filtering computes a color

Bilinear filtering uses the four texels surrounding a two-dimensional sample coordinate. It first linearly interpolates between the two horizontal pairs, then interpolates between those results vertically. Equivalently, each texel receives a weight based on its distance from the sample position, and the four weighted values are summed.

Compared with nearest-neighbor sampling, bilinear filtering removes hard square transitions when coordinates fall between texel centers. This is useful for ordinary photographs, UI images, and textures viewed at modest magnification. Pixel-art artwork may intentionally use nearest sampling instead, because bilinear blending changes deliberately sharp, discrete edges.

What bilinear filtering cannot do

Bilinear filtering only considers one resolution level and a small four-texel neighborhood. If a pixel covers a large or elongated region of the original texture, those four values are not an adequate representation of the whole footprint. Bilinear filtering therefore softens local transitions but is not, by itself, a complete minification anti-aliasing method.

Why mipmaps are used for minification

A mipmap is a chain of progressively smaller, prefiltered copies of a texture. The full-resolution image is level 0; each subsequent level represents a lower-resolution approximation. When an object becomes distant or occupies fewer pixels, the renderer selects a level whose texel density better matches the projected footprint.

Prefiltering the levels removes detail that could not survive at their respective resolutions. This generally makes distant textures more stable than repeatedly sampling the original high-resolution image, although downsampling cannot preserve every detail and is not an exact integrator for every pixel footprint.

How trilinear filtering differs

Trilinear filtering adds interpolation between mip levels. The sampler estimates a level of detail, bilinearly samples the two neighboring mip levels, and linearly blends those two colors according to the fractional level-of-detail value.

Without this cross-level blend, an object can show a visible boundary when the renderer switches abruptly from one mip level to the next. Trilinear filtering makes that transition gradual. It can trade a small amount of sharpness for temporal and spatial stability, and it still cannot reconstruct information already discarded while building the mipmaps.

Texture filtering versus anti-aliasing

“Anti-aliasing” describes reducing artifacts caused by undersampling, but the source of the aliasing matters.

Texture or surface aliasing

Texture aliasing appears when a detailed image is minified: thin stripes disappear or reappear, repeating patterns shimmer as the camera moves, and fine detail turns into moiré. Mipmaps with trilinear filtering provide a practical approximation for common cases. Anisotropic filtering improves the approximation when the pixel footprint is stretched along one direction, as on a floor or wall viewed obliquely.

Geometric edge aliasing

Polygon silhouettes and other geometry edges can form stair steps because coverage is sampled at too few locations. Multisample anti-aliasing (MSAA) addresses this by using multiple coverage/depth sample locations for a pixel. It targets geometric edge aliasing; it does not automatically solve texture shimmer or other surface-aliasing problems. Texture filtering and geometric anti-aliasing may therefore be enabled together.

When to choose each setting

  • Choose nearest when preserving exact texel boundaries is a visual requirement, accepting blocky motion and magnification.
  • Choose bilinear for smooth interpolation within a level when the texture is not undergoing severe minification.
  • Choose trilinear with mipmaps as a practical baseline for conventional 3D textures that become smaller on screen.
  • Add anisotropic filtering for distant, oblique surfaces where isotropic mip selection makes textures look blurry or unstable along one axis.
  • Use MSAA or another geometric technique for jagged polygon edges; do not expect it to replace texture filtering.

These are starting points, not hardware-independent performance guarantees. Memory use, cache behavior, shader cost, and image quality depend on the API, implementation, resolution, and target device. In Vulkan, anisotropic filtering is a sampler option constrained by the physical device’s reported maximum; query that limit rather than assuming a universal value. API labels and available modes also differ across graphics systems.

A practical diagnosis checklist

  1. Decide whether the artifact occurs during magnification, minification, or at a geometry silhouette.
  2. For blocky interpolation between texels, compare nearest and bilinear sampling.
  3. For distant texture shimmer or abrupt detail changes, verify that mipmaps exist and compare trilinear filtering.
  4. For a floor, road, or wall viewed at a steep angle, test anisotropic filtering within the device’s supported limit.
  5. For stair-stepped polygon boundaries, evaluate MSAA or another geometric anti-aliasing method separately.
  6. Profile the actual workload on the target hardware before making a speed or quality claim.

The key distinction

Bilinear filtering answers, “What value lies between nearby texels at this resolution?” Trilinear filtering answers, “How should the bilinear result transition between two resolutions?” Anti-aliasing is the broader goal of preventing unrepresentable detail from folding into visible artifacts, and its implementation depends on whether the detail comes from a texture, a geometric edge, or an elongated projected footprint.
