For a broad, beginner-friendly start, read Principles of Data Science from OpenStax: it is available free online and as a PDF, and it does not assume substantial prior coding experience. From there, choose a focused book that matches your goal—statistics, machine learning, deep learning, or another specialty—and confirm its edition and license on the publisher’s or author’s own site.

Start with OpenStax’s Principles of Data Science

Principles of Data Science, by Shaun V. Ault, Soohyun Nam Liao, and Larry Musolino, is an introductory textbook for undergraduate learners and people in related fields. OpenStax lists its publication date as January 24, 2025. The authors say it does not require significant prior coding experience or more than college algebra; it also introduces foundational statistics for readers with limited statistical background. OpenStax preface

The book moves from data science and data collection to statistical analysis, prediction and modeling, and professional and ethical practice. It emphasizes Python, with some Excel examples and an appendix on R. Topics include classification, clustering, decision trees, regression, neural networks, deep learning, and an introductory treatment of natural language processing, large language models, and AI. That breadth makes it a useful orientation, rather than a deep or definitive reference for rapidly changing AI topics.

You can read the textbook free in a web view or download its PDF; print copies are available for purchase. OpenStax calls the web view its recommended format because it is “the most accessible – including being WCAG 2.2 AA compliant – and most current.” Use the current web edition when possible and check the book page for updates or errata: OpenStax notes that data, technologies, topics, and legal circumstances change, and that web-based books may be updated periodically. Choose your next book by learning goal

After a broad introduction, narrow your search to the skill you want to develop. A specialist text may be a better next step than another general survey.

  • Python foundations or introductory data science: The Universal Open Textbook Initiative’s “Learn AI” section points to Introduction to Python Programming, Introduction to Computer Science, and Principles of Data Science. Its catalog can also be browsed by language, education level, and subject. Universal Open Textbook Initiative
  • Statistics, forecasting, or classical machine learning: OTexts says its online textbooks are freely available for self-learning and university courses. Its forecasting material illustrates why you should check which edition you are opening: it lists an R and forecast-package edition from 2018, an R edition using tsibble, feasts, and fable from 2021, and a Python edition from 2025. Choose the language and tool set that fit your experience. OTexts
  • Algorithms, programming, AI, or robotics: MIT Press’s open-access computer-science catalog includes open versions of Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs (1984), Reinforcement Learning (1998), How to Design Programs (2001), and Deep Learning (2016). These cover different subjects and levels; check the individual title page before choosing one as a first text. MIT Press open-access books
  • A particular AI or machine-learning specialty: A community-maintained GitHub index groups book links across deep learning, reinforcement learning, probabilistic and Bayesian methods, classical machine learning and statistics, NLP and LLMs, mathematics, ML systems, computer vision, generative models, causal inference, graphs, and AI safety. Use it as a discovery index, not as a guarantee that every entry is current or free under the same terms; it says it links to primary sources rather than hosting book files. Awesome Free AI Books

Check prerequisites, language, and depth before committing

A free book is most useful when its assumptions match what you already know. Introductory data-science texts can offer a broad workflow; focused treatments may expect programming experience or background in calculus, linear algebra, or probability. Read the book’s preface or course description for prerequisites, then compare its examples with the language and tools you intend to use. For instance, OpenStax emphasizes Python but also includes Excel examples and an R appendix, while the OTexts forecasting editions differ by language and software ecosystem.

Also distinguish an overview from a specialist reference. OpenStax introduces a range of machine-learning topics, but readers seeking depth in areas such as reinforcement learning, computer vision, probabilistic methods, or language technologies should follow the relevant specialist route and verify that the book covers the topic at the level they need.

Verify access and reuse rights at the source

“Free” can mean free to read, not necessarily free to redistribute, adapt, or use commercially. OpenStax describes its textbook content as licensed under CC BY-NC-SA. Springer Nature’s page for Chaolemen Borjigin’s 2023 Python Data Science describes chapters on Python, basic and advanced programming, data wrangling, and data analysis; its course materials are offered under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0. The publisher’s commercial book edition and the course materials have distinct access and licensing terms, so check the page for the specific item you plan to use. Springer Nature book page

Before relying on any catalog entry, open the official author, university, or publisher page and confirm that the book is still available, which edition it is, and what the license permits. A directory link is a lead, not a substitute for those checks.

Build a simple reading path

  1. Get the overview: Begin with the free web or PDF version of OpenStax’s Principles of Data Science if you want an accessible introduction across the data-science workflow.
  2. Identify the gap: Decide whether you need more programming practice, statistical foundations, classical machine learning, or a specialized AI subject.
  3. Match the edition: Check the programming language, tools, prerequisites, and publication or edition information before you invest time in a text.
  4. Confirm the terms: Verify access format and license on the official source, especially if you plan to share, modify, teach from, or reuse the material.
  5. Prefer maintained versions: Where a web edition or errata page exists, check it for updates as tools and AI practices change.
